These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Argh! I had a fantastic start on DS. It was as
fast as Mike's, but I collect other pellets and creatures. Well, the
run continued smoothly, until I lost a pikmin to a Pearly Clam Clamp
and let a dwarfie eat one. This made a red 10 come way to near the
blue onion. However, I didn't have time to fix that up immediately.
So I carried on, into the large water area with the blue 10. After
killing and collecting the wollywog by the bridge (dropped a yellow
5), setting five pikmin to work on the bridge and collected the
Pearl, I moved on to the blue 10. I threw too many Pikmin onto it,
so I tried to whistle a couple of them off, but I had to whistle off
everyone, and throw 10 new Pikmin. This error cost me about 5
seconds. When I came back to base, after picking up the blue 20, I
saw that both the yellow 5 from the wollywog and the red 10 had gone
into the blue onion, 7 lost from misfiling that is. I collected
everything in my strat in the area with the Mamuta, but when I was
going to collect a yellow 1 pellet, I kept grabbing blue Pikmin,
this cost me at least 5 seconds. After I had gone back to base to
gather up some Pikmin and take my final run back to the Mamuta area
to gather up the last items, time was running short. After some
franitc collecting I ended up with 567. But there was items worth 26
in the middle of the onion area. So, assuming I had two deaths,
didn't suffer from these unusual misfilings and didn't make such
stupid errors as with the blue 10 and yellow 1, my new high would
have been:
:::567 Total
+ 026 Just seconds from getting
in
+ 007 Misfilings
= 600 Total..
I think I'll have to
go and cry...

The Distant Spring - 643
Combined
Total - 2271
1 death, 1 misfiled five pellet.
I
said I would need a lot of luck and I finally got some. 4 out of the
last 5 frogs dropped blue pellets, coupled with the fact that
everything went smoothly and I was quicker than ever before meant I
finally broke 640. The only pellet which wasnt blue was a yellow
pellet which I called all the blues off in the onion area. I thought
I replaced them with 3 yellows and 2 blues, it was too my horror
that the damn pellet decided to go into the blue onion and cost me
645.
This is probably the end now, I could carry on trying to
squeeze out a few extra points but I will wait until someone
threatens to beat my score.

Really impressing, is 650+ possible? And Mike,
what new items have you added from your original 620

One fiery by the pearl in the lake area, and the frog and subsequent 5 pellet in the smoky progg area, they were relatively easy to add to my strat, but did cut into all of my refiling time, which is why i needed the last 5 frogs to drop blue.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a fiery, a wollywog
and a 5 pellet gives 21.. you've improved your score with 23!? Or
did you have a lot of deaths during yoou 620

Mike you just

You have no choice in the matter. It is your duty, and you owe it to

pellets.. Everything was in when the counter was at eight..

Every time I think you're done, you add to your
score, Mike. Excellent, phenomenal, work. I wish I could push you to
go for 650, but I haven't played in a week or so due to my moving
and I'm still looking at 623 for a max. Although I have an idea that
would hit 646 provided I got a crapload of luck...
Stein,
halfway home, now you need another 6 for 600.
TomatoMan, if
Mike has a record run on tape, would you consider doing a volume 2
DVD?

and alter the text on the back! :)
Yes, Rogue, 6 to go. I had
4 deaths on this run. So if I get the last dwarf in, and have 2 or
less deaths, I'll get that 600!

Stein, my 620 was from a 625 strat with 3 deaths
and a misfiled 5 pellet. My 643 was from a 646 strat with 1 death
and a misfiled 5 pellet. 646-625=21 which is what the extra stuff
give you. Congratulations on your 594, good luck getting
600.
TM, bad news on the vcr front, i used my last tape to
record my 638 and i havent got round to buying anymore yet. When i
get some more i will hit DS again and try and equal or better my
643.
Rogue, If i record a 643+ then you should try and record
a FN 482 then we can use them on a new version of the dvd, although
i wouldnt blame TM for not wanting to go through all the hassle of
converting my tape again.
Thanx Rob, maybe you should get
back on pikmin and challenge me on DS :), getting 650 would probably
kill me tho, it would require a phenomenal amount of luck to get no
deaths and no misfilings and to grab the 2 one pellets for the extra
4 points.

I'd be happy to do a DVD 2.0 if there's material
for it. Yes, getting the tape from Mike converted is a bit of money
and a bit of a pain, but it would be worth it. Mike, please buy
another tape! :)
Rogue, did you tape your 482? I'm thinking
that if we had another 482, we could spread out the authoring on the
DVD a little, since Mike currently has two slots (and seems to have
a pretty good hold on DS). Also, if we had an NTSC 482, that would
buy back a little bit of space on the DVD (since the PAL versions
are 20% longer) that we could use maybe for a nicer menu and an
info/story screen, or something.
If you didn't tape it, can
you do it again?
:)

The prospect of being on a vol. 2 DVD is very
intriguing to me, but I cringe at the thought of duplicating an FN
482. Iāll make a deal with you guys (Mike and TM). Iāll try to tape
a 482, if Mike will try to tape a 643+ DS and if TomatoMan will
create a vol. 2. Maybe we can work out a way to have everyone chip
in to cover the production costs·
I also have these taped and
available:
An IS 278 ö Stein, cocoa and Mike scored this before
me, but I have a little different strat.
A FoH 569 ö Again,
Stein, Nathan and cocoa would be ahead of me and Nathan probably has
the most interesting strat, but I got one on tape and itās different
from Snapās as well.
A FT 299 ö Carbon copy of Ahlyisā and Stein
would get the nod first, so probably worthless.
Let me know
what you guys think·

Posted by SuperStein - 8/4/2003 9:28:16 AM
My IS strat only has a couple of minor
differences from Tomatoman's strategy. I still only have one 569 on
FoH, but countless 568s, however, my run is similar with
SnapDragon's, just a couple of "improvements" (they made it easier
for me...). And FT.. well... that's almost completely Ahlyis'
strat...
I think it would be best if we kept most of the
records on tape to the US players, then TM will have the extra free
space to improve the Menu and stuff...(Not that it's needed, I love
the menu! :-) ) However, I know one person who has the US version of
Pikmin. If you want me to do a run for the next DVD I could probably
ask him if I could borrow his game for a couple of
days...

Well, we have me for DS and Rogue for FN,
assuming we can both repeat our feats on tape.
I think the
other contributors should be: Ahlyis, TM and Stein as they are the
most regular attenders of the board with top scores. Maybe TM for
FoH, Ahlyis for IS and Stein for FT or some other
combination.
The biggest cost will be getting mine and
possibly steins tapes converted, which will be $50 for the two. I
definitely will contribute my half of that and will include it when
i send my tape to TM.
I would say to make another DVD topic
but i want this one to fill-up quickly so i can make the next one
(if its my turn).
Posted by Ahlyis - 8/4/2003 11:26:15 AM
It would make more sense to keep Tomatoman for
IS and me for FT since we already have videos burned and ripped for
those. That is, unless there is some strong reason to get all new
videos for all levels for version 2. Is there?

I was just thinking it would be nice to put some
alternate strats on vol. 2 for variety's sake. To make sure all of
the original contributors are represented, we could use Snap's FT,
TM's FoH and Ahlyis' IS...
Mike, you got my vote on starting

don't have any strat that is really different from the first DVD.
Except for DS, that's almost intirely my own strat, but here I have
no good record!

My assumption when I first heard talk of a "2.0"
was that we'd just clean it up a bit and replace Mike's DS run with
a new high from him.
I suppose there's no logical objection
to a completely new one, although it *is* more work for me. :/ It's
work I'm willing to do, though, if people really want
it.
Meanwhile, I'm actually playing again a little, trying to
claw a few extra points on my FN 400 so I can sneak back on the top
10 combined. I'm trying a different approach just for giggles that
involves taking all 100 to the pearl area, and clearing it out in
one sweep so you don't go back for the pearl. I doubt that would be
a feasible level-clearing strategy, but I think I might be able to
better my 400 with it if I can resolve a few things.

About a dozen, maybe 15 in all, I'd say. A few
people sent a few extra dollars, which helped - I'd say I didn't
quite break even overall, but that was never the point. :) I finally
sent Ferret's and Snap's copies out a couple of weeks ago, so I
think all the contributers have theirs now.
I'm totally fine

Still no 643 on tape yet, but i havent actually
been going for it this weekend, because a copy of the US version of
pikmin came through my letter box yesterday morning, courtesy of
ebay.
In the 5 hours ive spent on it so far, i have done the
9 day challenge mode and got a 278 in IS and a 610 in DS. It took a
bit of getting used to the speed, but after an hour or so it just
seemed like normal. I can carry out my DS strat at the same speed on
this version as on my PAL version, and I havent noticed anything
different at all between the 2 versions (apart from the running
speed). Anyway, I will probably try to get a 640+ score taped from
this version, which will make even more space on the dvd for an
improved menu etc.
I can conclude that any advantage PAL
gamers have is minimal and at this level of competition, I would say
its too small too make a difference. I will carry on and try and
perfect the rest of the levels, except maybe FN which i will do
later on.

One hour of play today, and I have a NTSC FoH
569 and a FT 299. There are no differences in the versions for these
2 levels (except the speed), and they were both faster runs than my
568 and 297 I got in golf on my PAL version. Might go for a FN 452
later before trying to tape a DS high score.
Hows your 482
taping coming along Rogue?
Posted by Rogue7 - 8/11/2003 1:40:42 PM
Unfortunately, very slowly, Mike. I've only been
able to get one sitting in, but I felt good. The first time I got
two blue 5's I would have had a decent shot if it weren't for a few
time wasters. It ended up a 457.

this has happened to me often:
After making my first trip away
from the onions, I gather some pikmin and head out again to put 4
yellows on the bridge, get the red 5 and red 1. It's right at this
moment that the red 10 on the ledge (the one the 12 reds build the
stick to) falls and those 12 reds return to me instead of picking up
the 10. Does this trouble anyone else?

Thats happened a few times to me too Rogue.
Another annoying thing is in distant spring, when I throw 7 red
pikmin on the fiery and then leave, I often find that half the damn
pikmin come back to me when they get bucked off, which wastes a bit
of time.
Anyway, I have discovered that I cant tape a DS run
from my NTSC copy of pikmin. I was just testing everything was ok so
I taped just 10 seconds of footage and when I played it, it was all
jumpy and unwatchable. I figured it had something to do with it
being 60Hz, so I did the same thing with my Super Monkey Ball 2
game, which I can play in 50 or 60Hz. It was fine in 50Hz mode, but
in 60Hz mode it was all jumpy again. My guess is that because my
video isnt connected to my TV by a scart lead and just by a normal
lead it cant send the data properly in 60Hz. I cant connect them
with a scart lead as I only have 1 scart socket on the TV and only 1
on the video.
I carried on playing DS on my NTSC copy and got
a 622.

Well, since nobody else is doing it, and hasn't
for a little while now, I guess I'll go ahead and post a new top
score. :-)
FN - 422
Combined Total - 2130
I
sat down and played a bit last night. I got lucky with the FB
dropping red-blue better than 50% of the time. I need either
red-blue or blue-blue from the FB in order to have the proper color
mix of Pikmin for my pattern.
I tweaked a few things on my
earlier pattern. Instead of getting the yellow 5 and red 10 on the
beach early, I leave them until later. I get the red 10 as I head to
the pearl area the first time. That lets enough reds get back to the
onions by the time I return to be able to get the red 20 that the
yellows build the ramp for when I return to collect those yellows. I
get the yellow 5 on the way back from breaking the pearl. After
breaking the pearl, I always had 6-10 yellows with me still and I
never had a use for them. Now they can grab that yellow 5 on the way
back. :-)
I also abandoned the blue 10 and 20 past the pearl
and opted to collect the blue 10 and 20 from the lake instead. This
also allows them to get back faster so that they are available for
use when I get back. The old way, I always ended up waiting at the
onions for things to return.
The 60 points left behind are
the blue 10 and 20 past the pearl, the yellow 20 requiring a second
bridge, and the yellow 10 that requires blues to bring it out of the
small lakes area.
With a perfect run, I think I might have
time to get that yellow 10 at the end, but the other three pellets
are out of the question with my pattern.

Congrats on your new score Ahlyis.
I got
a NTSC FN 482 this morning, which brings my combined total for NTSC
to 2250. I think this pretty much confirms that the difference
between NTSC and PAL is negligable.
I was ahead of schedule
at all 3 bells, I lost my rhythm slightly in the last quarter, but I
managed to get everything in just before the day ended. I can also
confirm 480 is possible in NTSC as I can stop the yellow 10 from
getting sucked in the blue onion even if I have 2 less on the wall,
although only just.

Excuse my brain fart. I of course meant I need
the Breadbug to drop the right colors, not the Flint Beetle
as my post says. :-)

I should preface this tale of woe by saying I
did not get a 482 on tape.
I got some time last night to get
a little pikmin in and wanted to try to get that 482 on tape. I had
a practice run of 467 with a misfiled 5 and two 10ās and a 5 that
just missed getting in, so I hooked up the VCR, feeling good.
Several runs come up short, but they were because of things that
donāt happen often: an idle red was too close to an edge and fell
into water, all ten blues didnāt get on a 10, stuff like that, so
Iām still confident. Then, the breadbug drops two blue 5ās and I get
only my third chance at 482 all night. The run is going splendidly,
no mistakes, Iām ahead at the first bell, all 100 pikmin get
flowered and Iām back at the onions for the noon bell ahead of pace.
But when I get there, Iām missing the second red 5 that should be
back. 482 is blown, but I want to see what happened, so I go down to
where it was. I find that the five reds I threw at it picked it up
and are carrying it, but are pinned behind a flower. This has
happened to me before, but only once every 50 runs or so. So the
night painfully ended empty handed, but I might get a chance to give
it another go tonight·
Mike, keep on plugginā.
Nice
work on 422 Ahylis.

Distant Spring - 643 -on tape
2
misfiled five pellets and I managed to collect an extra one pellet
which I also misfiled.
I got 2 blues and 3 reds from the
frogs at the end. I got one of the reds to the red onion, and I had
one waiting outside the red onion as well, but when I was refiling
the red 10 pellet I panicked thinking I didnt have enough time to
refile that and the red 5 so I quickly sent the red 5 to the blue
onion. After everything was in I realised I had more time than I
thought and it would easily have made it to the red
onion.
The first half of this run was my quickest first half
ever, but I made a few mistakes in the second half which cost me a
few seconds and possibly a 645/647.

Excellent work, Mike, I guess the pressure's on
now. Actually, I got a 480 (my first one) on tape last night, so I
feel like I should have something soon. Unfortunately, I won't be
able to play tonight...
heirware, that's not
funny

No pressure Rogue, Im going to give it another
couple of days to try and improve my score although I have to say
its not very likely.
I hope the moving in is going
smoothly.
