GameFAQs archives
These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

I've been off the top 10 combined for quite a
while now. :) I actually haven't played in quite some time. I don't
think I'm off by too terribly much, though, and that 400 on FN can
certainly come up. That should probably get me back to #10 or so,
where I hope to hang on. Probably not until April though.

WHOO HOO!
Managed to get 532 in Forest
of Hope ..
Four 1-pellets that went into the wrong onion, 8
deaths thanks to a hungry Bulborb, and I missed the red-5 pellet and
the yellow-20.
It feels soooo close! :D
Posted by robluvsnic - 3/16/2003 4:21:09 PM
Well, it's been a while since I posted a new
high, mostly because I've been playing the main game a lot lately.
But here it is at last:
FT ÷ 259
So close to
272 (one male sheargrub and a yellow ten right under the onions at
lift-off), but enough to get me back into the top 20, nevertheless.
I'm aiming for 279 ÷ everything but the blue 20 ÷ which I think I
can actually get eventually.
But here's a potential new
record: twice now I've had Snagret come up fast 12 times
before it came up slow!

Something weird happened to me at The Distant
Spring. When I reached the frog that was closest to the ClamClamp,
it gave me a blue five in which I was happy to see because I had 2
before I killed it. But after I got the pearl I went to get the blue
5s but when I reached one of them, it started to move and when five
Pikmin got on it the blue five moved like crazy and then it
disappeared into the ground. Did any of this happened to you
guys?

I've seen that happen. It usually pops back up when it happens to me - if you can affect the area around it somehow (run pikmin through it, especially if they're carrying something), that will often make it reappear.

New high:
FN - 470
Combined
Total - 2198
I got into a big rut on DS, so I switched
over to FN. I was actually going for 455 by ignoring the last three
fives and making sure the BLL pellets get in, but I made such good
time on this run that I had to try to get them in. I would like to
go for 480/482, the hardest part (for me) is the honeywisp and
getting the yellow 10 in the water, but I think I can get it with
practice. Maybe when the DVD comes out I'll get a better idea of
what Mike does there.

Congratulations rogue, i hope you keep at it and
get a perfect 482. Its great to see new high scores after quite a
barren spell.
I played pikmin for the first time in about a
month at the weekend, a magazine is doing a challenge to get a high
score on FoH. I had two quick practice runs, then started taping and
got 569 on my first go, so me playing pikmin again was
shortlived.
Got metroid prime on friday though, phenomenal
game.

Do you get a prize Mike? I can just imagine the
potential racketeering that could be started by the high scorers
from this board. Reading the world's gaming magazines looking for
Pikmin high-scores competitions in order to sweep the pool and live
off the prizes. ;-)
Congrats, Rogue, for a major jump in your
score. And it sounds like you've done it in a way that no one else
has considered. I look forward to seeing you post a 482
soon.

Well, i could do if i win, the magazine sets 4
challenges all from different games usually, and they give a load of
peripherals to the winner who got the biggest margin over everyone
else out of all the challenges. I wont find out for 2 months
though.
The magazine did a challenge for impact site in august,
and that is what got me into pikmin in such a big way, and i sent in
a 278 video, my first perfect. i never recieved my prize though so i
will have to email them one day for it.

Thanks, Mike, rob. I am following Mike's write
up that he posted some time back, except I'm ignoring the yellow 10
in the water in the beginning and using two grass patches as opposed
to one and a honeywisp. It wasn't too hard to pick up since the
middle part and some of the beginning is pretty similar to what I
already do, and the rest Mike makes very straightforward. It's a
very awe-inspiring strat and my hat's off to Mike. If I do reach
480/482 it will be a testimony to Mike's strat and I'll always be
more proud of my 452. Thanks again Mike!

For IS CM what order of pellets does the flint
beetle give you? I always hit the beetle 4 times. Come to think of
it, I have a new IS score.

In IS CM, the flint beetle pellets are always
blue.
1 = blue 1
2 = nectar
3 = nectar
4 = blue
5
5 = blue 1
6 = nectar
7 = nectar
8 = blue 5
A
clean sweep of IS is 264; you can get 14 more from the flint beetle
for a maximum known total of 278.

Whoo hoo!
FT ÷ 278
If it
weren't for one stupid mysterious death on the snagret, I would have
brought in everything that my strategy allows for (i.e. everything
bar the blue 20). Looks like I might even have to go for the perfect
÷ who would ever have thought it possible?
But, no, for the
moment I think I'll return to Impact Site to see if I can tackle
that flint beetle. Just enough hits for a five pellet and a one
pellet should do for now (maybe two one pellets; we'll
see).

And, Rouge, thanks for the
support. I know what you mean about not being able to report new

Zelda ÷ and, ooh, do I envy you in that respect! ÷ but just because
I don't get that much time to play. Plus my wife has now gotten back
into FoH (new high of 520), so we have to share what spare time we
have to play the game.
And, MasterBowser, I've got my eye on
you. You've already knocked me down a place or two on one list.
Let's not have a repeat of that, okay? It's perfectly fine for you

A minor improvement:
FN ÷ 366
After having a few runs at the flint beetle in Impact
Site to try to better my 264 I have decided not to give up playing
Forest Navel. Who needs to whack a beetle for extra pellets, when
there are heaps of extra tens and twenties just lying around, free
for the taking, in Forest Navel? I've found myself a new strategy,
which can get me 390, and possibly without too much hair-pulling, so
I'll give that a few runs and hopefully, after next weekend, I'll be
able to report an even better score.

Great site you got their TM. I didnt realise you
put so much effort into getting your 278, but the feeling of
achievement you got must have been 10 times greater than if you had
got it sooner. I also read the first challenge mode thread as well,
it was very interesting seeing peoples early efforts and now i
understand why snap gets the amount of recognition he does, he was
pretty awesome back then. I would love to see the second thread if
anybody has it.
Unlucky about the cube Rogue, just as you
were approaching perfection on forest navel, major pain in the

Congrats to everyone on their new

TomatoMan! That's awesome! Who would have
thought that 278 on IS was possible?! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Er,
sorry for that belated outburst. I've just been reading through all
the archived challenge mode topics, and I was so engrossed in TM's
struggle to master IS that I felt I couldn't let it go with out
contributing to the "propz" (TM's word) for that amazing feat. It
reminds me (albeit anachronistically) of the Nathan/Mike battle and
the astounding scores that came out of that. Such a shame that the
second thread was lost. That's the one in which I first came on
board, and I just love reading my own work ;-)
Back on topic,
though, I managed, whilst lying sleepless in bed last night to
complete fine-tune a potential strategy for 402 on FN. I think it's
achievable, unlike any battle with that %&^$#* beetle, so I
hereby vow to devote my Pikmining days to attaining that
goal.
BTW, back off topic, it was so funny reading through
those early days of challenge mode posts, when everyone referred to
more than one pikmin as "pikmins". Then, mysteriously, as if through
some unspoken agreement, the pluralised form of "pikmin' took hold.
(Okay, not so interesting/funny to some, but I am an English/writing
guy, after all.)

Rogue suggested I add a timeline with the top combined
score, which is an interesting idea. He even dug into the threads
and figured out when the lead changes occurred. He observed that
Mike is entering a SnapDragon-like period of dominance in terms of
how long his lead has lasted. :) I should see if I can get a nice
graph made. Lemme see what I can come up with.
I agree that
it's tragic that the second thread is gone. I keep hoping there's a
way to get the WayBack Machine to give it up, but I haven't been
able to it. I had a brief exchange with the guy that codes GameFAQs
to ask if he had archives, or whether the database really did get
purged. He insisted there were no archives, which I think is REALLY
unfortunate, but there it is.

Actually, TM, it seems that all hope is not
lost. Check the DVD thread, where RockMFR5 says that he has the
second thread!!!

On the issue of the old threads, I've been
rereading them all day (and not getting a lick of work done), and
I've noticed two things: (1) I'm missing page 10 from CM4 ÷ I've got
the files, but just not the page10.html; and (2) my combined score
is at 1789, which would have been enough to make the top ten, once
upon a time (i.e. when the top ten combined was first envisioned).
That makes me feel a bit better about my Pikmin
achievements.

BTW, back off topic, it was so funny reading
through those early days of challenge mode posts, when everyone
referred to more than one pikmin as "pikmins". Then, mysteriously,
as if through some unspoken agreement, the pluralised form of
"pikmin' took hold. (Okay, not so interesting/funny to some, but I
am an English/writing guy, after all.)
yeah i noticed
that too, i thought it was very funny.

I know page 10 is missing from CM4 - no idea
what happened, it just ain't there. I'm hoping Rock can send me a
copy of his CM4 archive, and the CM2 archive as well.
If he
does, I'll whip up a quick Perl script and reformat these things so
they're easier to read and move through. The present archives work,
but they're on the clumsy
side.

I'm going to play Pikmin some more tonight. I'm
hoping (keyword: hoping) to break my DS record on the same
day I turn Level 30 (today). Let's hope I get "dumb bulborbs" (the
ones that don't seem to notice that your Pikmin exist).
About
the Pikmin/Pikmins thing, I just pluralized it like "Pokemon" and
left it alone. If it ended with anything else instead of an
n, I'd probably put an s (es, ies) as
plural.

Typical! I always get beat. Seriously, though,
congrats MasterBowser, and you too, Distant Spring.
I managed
to find an hour to play last night, and not only did I keep stuffing
up the start so much that I had to reset about 12 times, but I also
realised that I miscalculated on my strat, such that I had one less
blue than I thought I had. As a consequence, I didn't even get to
finish a run.

Rogue7, do you happen to have posts 451-500 of
the 4th topic? (page 10 at 50 posts/page; since I don't know what
your post settings are, I'll just say the post #s) They're missing
from TomatoMan's archive. If you have them, e-mail the posts to me
(post, date, & time) perhaps in an attachment but remember
that I only have 2 MB account space. I'll be publicizing my
e-mail on GameFAQs shortly.

I just read back over the posts from the last
few days, and ...
Rogue, tragic news! Really sorry to hear
it. I hope your cube recovers soon. Just when I was sure you going
to blind us all by hitting the perfect on FN.

DS, Rock sent me his complete archives, which
include the missing page in CM4 and also provides the second thread,
which I lost. All props to him!
I'm going to reformat these
so they can be browsed a little easier, and then put them up again
on my site. Probably over the
weekend.
