NTSC or PAL taped 643?
---
www.cyberturf.com/ds54 (Currently being updated)

Posted by Mikepharvey - 8/19/2003 3:23:01 PM

PAL, i cant tape in NTSC unfortunately, but I am pretty confident it is possible on NTSC. I havent had many goes on DS in NTSC but theres a few times where the first half bell has gone off near where it went off in my 643, way past where it goes off in my 620, but i have messed up the last half in each case. My NTSC 622 came from a pretty slow first half but I managed to pull of a scorcher of a second half and was unlucky not to get 630+. If I could get a full decent run then I reckon 640+ could be done.

Slightly off topic, but I know some of you only have this thread bookmarked and don't check the main Pikmin board.

I wanted to let everyone know that I've tossed down the gauntlet on a new Challenge for the main game.

The challenge is to reach Distant Spring on Day 4!

This requires that you get 12 parts total, i.e., 1 part on Day 1, 5 parts on Day 2! and 6 parts on Day 3!!!

Impossible you say? Not at all. Certainly not easy, but I HAVE done it, so I know it's possible!!! :-)

Anyone else care to try it?

I'm also working on trying to get 7 parts from the first Day at Distant Spring, though not on Day 4. You need more blues than you can have on Day 4.

I have done the challenge to reach DS on Day 4. I'm working on the secondary challenge of getting 7 parts from DS on the first visit there. So far, I've gotten 6 parts and had the 7th halfway back. That was a fairly sloppy run, so I know that I can save time in places and most likely will be able to get 7 parts on that first visit! :-)

How about it peeps? Anyone care to give it a shot? Post some comments to my new thread instead of here. Thanks.

I had an hours play last night, and I had 2 really good runs ruined near the end, one was ruined by having too many deaths, mostly non mysertious, and i ended up with a 636, and the other i messed up big style in the middle of the third quarter and never finished.

Im going to leeds festival tomorrow till monday, so no more play for me for a little while.

*is really excited because metallica are only 2 days away and 19th birthday is only 3 days away*

Good luck with the 482 Rogue.

See you all tuesday (possibly monday night)

d2k3, are you sure that your 323 is the highest you've made on Forest Navel? Because on my complete CM scores list on my website it says that you've already made a 328. You might want to check your scores again.

It is possible I might have made a mistake, since I was looking through over 2400 posts, and if so please tell me so I can fix my rankings.

I have you at FN 328 on my list also, d2k3. Speaking of which it could use an update, If I get a second I'll do it today.

Success! I have a 482 on tape. Several hours the past two nights restarting everytime I got anything other than two blues and finally I got it. Nothing out of the ordinary on the run, I did try to "take a bow" at the end by zooming in and hitting the A button, but some blues were with me and it just looked like I threw one for the heck of it. Oh well...

If we want to do a vol.2 DVD, this tape is done and is an option, just let me know what to do with it...

I never did any celebration at the end of my 643 on tape, I think I was too mentally exhausted to realise that I had time to do a quick one.

I have now swapped my cube for a psone (temporarily) and getting stuck into ff7, so I will send Tomatoman my 643 for the dvd as my final DS score.

Mike, what's your current NTSC Distant Spring score? I've been thinking about the 60/50 ratio and decided that you add that into the randomization factor and response time it will be like 60% more difficult to make an NTSC643.
---
www.cyberturf.com/ds54 (Being updated)

Posted by Mikepharvey - 9/7/2003 2:44:27 AM

My current top score for DS in NTSC is 622. Given the fact ive only played on this level on NTSC for no more than 5hrs, i was pleased to get this score, and this score was from a run with lots of mistakes at the beginning. I would say 643 is definitely possible on NTSC, it may be harder, but I found the perfects in the other levels to be of the same difficulty in both PAL and NTSC.

Maybe when I get my cube back I will play more NTSC DS to try and match my score, but until then I suppose its all theoretical.

You guys are talking about NTSC and PAL scores, is there really that much difference between the two?
I'm playing on PAL btw

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/7/2003 1:10:02 PM

The main difference seems to be speed only. The ratios between the games are the same, but having it play slightly slower means your reactions seem faster on the PAL than on the NTSC. That could let you do better on PAL simply because the game runs slightly slower.

The difference isn't enough that we felt the need to keep separate scoreboards for the two versions, but there is a difference.

Well, that's still speculation, and from the sounds of it, unwarranted speculation. Mike is reporting no difference (be it real or apparent) in reaction time, etc.

Sorry, I just have to stress that point because I play PAL, and my scores are so crap that I couldn't cope with any suggestion, however speculative, that PAL playing is easier, however minutely so, than NTSC, since that would mean that my scores are even crappier than they appear to be at the moment!
---
Please don't beat me!

Posted by Mikepharvey - 9/8/2003 2:41:41 AM

I think the size of the difference between the 2 could well be dependant on the player themselves. I find the 2 versions to be almost identical in difficulty, and the fact that I would be top in combined scores using my PAL or NTSC scores is a testament to this. Another player however might find that PAL is easier than NTSC and score better in the former in most levels.

One thing Ahlyis is right about is that PAL gamers do gain an advantage in throwing pikmin. During most of the game this has no effect though as I dont throw pikmin at maximum speed most of the time and therefore gain no advantage. However, I find that we do have an advantage against Clams and Puffstool, both enemies require throwing pikmin fast too kill them. I find it tougher to kill a Clam with just one round of throwing in NTSC than in PAL, which can cause me to panic and lose a lot of pikmin to the clam. The killing of both enemies is hardly a huge consumption of time though and although there is a difference it is negligible.

Puffstool is not too hard to kill in one pass for me, but clam clamps? You kill them routinely in one pass? It always takes me 2 passes and occasionally 3 if my aim is off.

Hey Mike, are you talking about using reds against the clamclamps? Or do you routinely 'kill' them in one pass with any color Pikmin?
---

Posted by SuperStein - 9/9/2003 10:36:57 AM

Ahlyis, if a chuck a sufficient load of blue Pikmins on any of tha clam clamps in Distant Spring, I usually take them down in one "round".
---
Henshin-a-go-go-baby!

Posted by Mikepharvey - 9/9/2003 12:18:48 PM

Usually I can do the one near the two frogs with one round if i have mostly flowered blues, the one near the two bridges I always do in two rounds seens as i dont have many pikmin attacking it and they are a mixture of all three colours, and the last one I can usually do in 1 round with flowered blues although i tend to be very careful on this one and call them off early so as to insure no deaths being that close to the end of a run.

The one in Forest Navel i can usually do in two rounds with 9 flowered yellows, but sometimes it takes 3 or even 4 goes if I throw them in the wrong place.

The two in FoH I can usally do in 1 round each because I have lots of flowered reds for both.

Of course, to do any in one round requires good timing and to throw the pikmin in a good spot, then throw as fast as I can for a bit, then wait a few seconds, then call them off. Usually the last pikmin will escape just before the clam shuts. If you continually throw up until you call them off then the last few pikmin may be slow to react and will invariably die.

I really havent experimented enough on NTSC, but there is a difference there, and of course the timing is all different, so most of the time I was calling them off too soon to avoid deaths.

For me, I'll always look back fondly on hitting 442 in FN. Although frustrating at times when I would come up just short, it was a blast to plot it out and finally hit it. Getting 616 in DS was cool also, but if I took it up again I'm sure I could get closer to 623. Either way, that was fun also, taking the all blues approach and milking so much out of it.

Hey rob, thanks for the props. Like I said above, I'd like to hit DS again, there's seven points for improvement, but I'm leaning towards finally calling it quits. Of course, should Pikmin 2 lack a challenge mode, I could find my way back at it...

This is a tough one, getting 447 on FN was the first time I had broken a record, although it was quickly beaten by Nathan. Getting 609 on DS with a totally original strat was another fond memory, as was perfecting Forest Navel (although that was for the difficuty of the accomplisment), but i guess the score I am most proud of is my 643 in DS, mainly because it was a very difficult task, and the strategy was my own, although everybody offered hints and tips along the way.

The two in FoH I can usally do in 1 round each because I have lots of flowered reds for both.

Interesting. These two I always use bombs on. Takes two bombs, but I have the bombs available for the one in the Snagret area and I prefer to kill the clamclamp over the borb using bombs in the ACB area. I can safely swarm the borb, so I just bomb the clamclamp.

which score are you guys most proud of?

For me, in Challenge Mode, I'd say getting 299 on FT. At the time, only Snap had managed a perfect on that level. Also, I had to use a 100% original pattern because nobody else even had a posted pattern at that time!

But I'm more proud of completing the 10 Day, 50 total Pikmin challenge with no deaths in the main game. That is one seriously difficult challenge. Afaik, only Dragorn and I have completed it and we used vastly different patterns for FN.

Didn't Mike end up doing it as well? Well, all I'm sure of is that it'd take many attempts for me to get through it, and with limited hours for Nintendo fun, I don't want to even start for fear of never giving up...

We're getting close to the end of this thread -- into the last 10 posts. So Mike could probably start a thread whenever he feels like it. And the new thread will most likely be the last instalment, judging by the slowing rate of new scores posts.

Didn't Mike end up doing it as well?

No I didnt complete this challenge. I did do some of it, but I started playing pikmin less and less while I was at uni and never got round to completing it. Also I think what I did in FN first day wouldnt have been enough for me to clear it in the 2 days. I may take up the task again in the future but I can definitely say it will be a very tough challenge, so congratulations to Ahlyis and Dragorn for completing it.

As for FoH, I only use bombs for walls in this level, I kill all enemies by swarming or throwing pikmin, im pretty sure Nathan did it like this as well.

I shall start a new thread soon, which may or may not be the last given pikmin 2's delay to next spring.

7 months 9-10 days

This puts the end of topic 6 (i.e. 3000th post) assuming a constant rate in late April so there may be a "Challenge Mode Scores version 7. (posts 3001-3500)" although it may not last long.

This topic MUST reach 500, it cannot be purged or it would invalidate the title of this and the 6th topic.
