These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Ouch,Ouch,Ouch. I had your DS score beat mike if I would have had a few more seconds. The run was flawless, almost. I had 1 death and a misfiled 5 pellet. The run was ahead of schedule on all 3 bells but when the hurry up warning came I was a little behind. The next thing I know the run has ended and my score was 579 with a 20 pellet, 2 5's, and a bulborb that were inches from the onion. Just another few seconds it would have all made it and I would have had a 622.

No new scores for me, I haven't been playing very much Pikmin. I really want that FoH 569, does anyone have any strategies for getting the yellow 20-pellet?

On a completely unrelated and off-topic note, I am now a veteran! Yay!

DS54, hereās how I get the yellow 20 in FoH:

Early on (before the first bell, probably 8:00 or so), I have all my reds and yellows build the short bridge and I take my blues into the water to collect the blue 10 and two blue 1ās near the yellow 20. While there, I throw two blues up to build the long bridge. I leave those two for the rest of day, it will take them nearly the whole day to build the bridge. Towards the end of the day, after Iāve cleared the ACB pearl area, I pick up yellows and blues from the onions and collect the blue 10 up on the ledge and then the yellow 20. If you get the yellow 20 moving with 40+ pikmin before the countdown starts and add guys to 50 as soon as you can, it should get in.

My complete walkthrough is in the challenge mode guide of the FAQās if you want to check it out. There are several FoH strats and theyāre all pretty different, so you could get some good pointers there.

I do something similar with the blues, but I leave the short bridge til later. Although there are many different patterns for FoH, I think pretty much all of them involve leaving a couple of blues working the back bridge most of the day.

The max for my strat is 598 and this run I had two deaths, one misfiled 5 and a 1 pellet I couldn't get in. This followed a couple runs where I had a late disasters, notably once where I reached the third bell at my fastest pace and then immediately lost 63 pikmin to a frog mishap.

Congratulations Rogue, good luck in breaking 600 soon.

Also congratulations on your wedding, i hope it went well.

Posted by Rogue7 - 7/7/2003 12:59:22 PM

Thanks for the encouragement, Mike. I canāt break 600 with my current strat unless I swap a frog and 5 for two fiery blowhogs and then get crazy lucky to hit 601. Either that or change the order I get the pearls. Question for you ö do you find leaf pikmin to be more effective against mamuta? It seems like they work better, but then I hate taking on frogs with leafs·

The wedding went great, thanks for asking. A friend put together a video for us and played it at the wedding, but it did not have a single mention of my pikmin exploits. How absurd is that? I thought our cake should have had little candy pikmin looking like they were carrying the top layer away, but I got vetoed.

Posted by Mikepharvey - 7/8/2003 4:54:35 AM

I think that if you have 100 pikmin, then killing mamuta with flowers is pretty similar too killing him with leafs. The reason i do it with leafs is because i wanted to save the closest grass to the onions till the end to flower all the blues with.

Using the grass patch by the second puffstool to flower my initial 100 pikmin means taking mamuta and one frog out with leafs, but 100 leafs is usually quite adaquate to take out the frog, although i tend to get more md's on that frog than any other.

I really want to get into distant spring again, but ocarina of time is too addictive. When ive completed it though, i will try and impove my distant spring score.

Posted by Rogue7 - 7/8/2003 8:04:45 AM

Mike, did you know that there is a grass patch just before mamuta? It's right around the corner once you leave the onion area.

I got it in my head that leafs work better against mamuta, but it seems that getting him to swing at you instead of the pikmin is the most important thing, especially when you attack him with only 89 guys like I do. I have too many problems with MD's on that nearby frog, so I think I'm going to switch back to using the above grass patch.

Zelda does that. I'd play Pikmin but I've fallen into the Wind Waker trap. And trying to do the second time around with as little help as possible... (really not that hard).

Mike, did you know that there is a grass patch just before mamuta? It's right around the corner once you leave the onion area.

No i didnt know this, this could save a few seconds but i cant see it being a major help timewise. If it means less mds on the frog though then its definitely worth using.

Zelda does that. I'd play Pikmin but I've fallen into the Wind Waker trap. And trying to do the second time around with as little help as possible

The last zelda game i played before i bought windwaker was Link to the past on the snes since i never had an n64, so getting the bonus disk free was amazing since i got two new games, both lasting 20+ hours at least, although windwaker lasted 8 weeks since i didnt play my cube much last term because of exams etc. Windwaker was pretty easy though, although i loved the graphics.

Posted by Rogue7 - 7/9/2003 8:20:08 AM

I played a little last night using the different grass patch. It didn't make a difference in time, but out of four runs I didn't have a single MD on that first frog. The only thing is that since I don't flower my group a second time, those two extra enemies seemed to knock a lot of petals off my flowers and made things slow at the end. If I could get quicker, then I could just use two patches...

Posted by Ahlyis - 7/9/2003 10:09:25 AM

Here's a thought. Perhaps you can work it in, perhaps not...

Past Mamuta, turn right past the sleeping borb and down by the water where the two frogs and the pearl are. There is a grass patch on the opposite side of the small lake where that first frog is.

When I go to get the pearl and frogs, I drop everyone, then grab the blues. Then I toss 2 blues onto that grass patch before heading to battle the frogs and clamclamp. When I come back, that grass patch is completely picked and I can quickly flower anyone who needs it without waiting for them to pull up the nectar.

It's not a great help since most are flowered already anyway, but occasionally I end up with a lot of buds from frog bucking.

Anyway, I was just thinking it might be of some help to someone. :-)

Heartbreaking DS run last night. I decided it wasnāt worth continuing with my exact strat just to squeeze a final two points out and still be under 600, so I started thinking about how I could tweak it. I got an idea that would reach 607-613, the six point range because there would be three frog 5ās that I would not be able to change if they were non-blue. After a few tries, Iām on a run that is fast and lucky. Two of the three frogs I mentioned dropped blue 5ās, Iāve had no deaths, I had hit the flint beetle right by the blue onion and flowered my group a second time, and reached the third bell as fast as I ever had. Iām thinking about 611, but then, the frog by the bridge, the same frog that Iāve killed probably 20 times in a row without a MD, gives me 6 MDās! I continue because I know I can still break 600, but in this mess I forget that a key change I made for this strat was to leave this frogās pellet even if itās blue (which it was). I collect the pellet, meaning 5 less pikmin work on the bridge and I donāt realize what Iāve done until itās too late. I get everything I need moving, but the bridge finishes too late and because Iām at the bridge instead of the onions at the end, a traffic jam keeps the blue 20 and other assorted goodies from getting in. I get a woeful 512. I could have gone to sleep, but that would only have meant a night of pikmin nightmares, so·

New high:

DS ö 608
Combined Total ö 2236

One MD, two misfiled 5ās. This happened a few runs after the above screw up and was equally fast and lucky, the only thing was I misfiled a 5 somewhere at the end (I think I left one too close to the blue onion and some idle ones grabbed it). I might continue with this just to see if I can squeeze any of those last 5 points out, but I think 613 is the ceiling for the order I get the pearls. So glad to break 600, especially after that mishap·

Side note ö Am I the only one still playing? Curse you, Zelda!

I still play once in a while, but recently mostly just from the Golf tournaments. Now that those seem to be dead, I might not play too much. I still have a lot of room to improve on both DS and FN though, so one day I may sit down and work on this again. :-)

Congrats on breaking 600!

Some notes:
-Last time the board was updated it was expanded to a top 25, which I thought was a good idea, so I'll expand it also. Thanks go out to DS54. Maybe the extra spots will spark some competition.
-I put an asterisk on my DS 608 even though it's not a top 3, I think all 600+ scores should require some verification.
-Since Secrano's 569 is unverified, rob stays on the leaderboard until the asterisk is removed.
-No offense, FFX CRAZY MAN, I did not include your DS 518 only because it's a little high for a debut and I would feel better if you could provide a walkthrough or screenshot.
-I also removed The Champ's IS 253. It was disputed when he first posted it, to no response, so I'm not going to bump DS54 for that score.
-I am not the final say, so if anyone disagrees, we'll vote or something...

Ah, the spoils of my efforts, an updated leaderboard. Thanks, Ahlyis. I hope all goes well for the reception, the only advice I have is to try to enjoy it (easy for the guys).

Mike, 630+? You're crazy. I've bounced around an idea to add a red 10 at the end of my 613 strat, which would work, but I'd need some blue pellets to keep the re-IDing down.

Thanks for the props, guys and I'm still pluggin'...

I updated to top 25 partly because I wanted to; partly because of the high # of perfects on IS, FoH, FT; and partly to see if it will still fit. I just hope we don't get an influx of Pikmin players with really long usernames...

On a side note, I will probably be back to Pikmin soon as I'm already on the Earth Temple in the second quest. I wonder if the strategic thinking required by Zelda games can assist in playing Challenge Mode...

Wait, "strategic thinking"? This is GameFAQs. If I want help with Wind Waker OR Pikmin, I'd just go here...

Oh yeah, I didn't update the top 10 to a top anything more, too much of a hassle to add everyone's scores up and see what they made. It's not even on my website. Maybe I'll do that later...

ok, i finished ocarina of time on saturday night, so as promised, i spent a few hours yesterday and a few hours today playing distant spring. No new scores to report yet, but ive been mighty close to 625-633 a few times. I always seem to mess up somewhere near the end and ruin all my previous good work. For example, on my third run of the day yesterday, i was having an absolute scorcher of a run. I was well ahead of schedule on all 3 bells, the third one ringing when i had flowered my pikmin for the second time, i had had no deaths, no misfilings and it was as perfect as it possibly could be. I decided instead of going for an easy 625, as long as the last frog didnt give mds or a freak accident and no accidental misfilings, i decided to kill a fiery and get the 8 extra points. So i went to one, threw a pikmin on him, waited for him to buck it off, then swarmed him, unfortunately i absolutely cocked it up and he flamed about 20 of them, so i reset and went to cry in a corner ;)

Going to carry on pluggin today

Posted by Mikepharvey - 7/14/2003 8:39:04 AM

oh, i forgot to mention that im using the grass patch by mamuta instead of the one by puffstool. Im having mixed results. It seems more difficult and risky to kill mamuta but i usually get less mds on the frog, except the first time which i got 7.

Posted by Rogue7 - 7/14/2003 2:09:22 PM

Mike, thatās rough and I certainly know how it felt, but it sounds like youāre back in the groove and maybe weāll see a new high soon. I played around with my strat the last few days and I think I found a reasonable way to add a red 10 to it. Problem is, I get streaky, both hot and cold, on DS. Iāve had times where Iām lights out lucky/fast and stretches where I canāt get past the first or second bell without something going wrong. Anyway, Iāve been cold and havenāt even gotten one run where I can see for sure if this tweak has a chance.

Hereās a question, Mike. When do you collect the extra fiery blowhog? Iām guessing itās after you get mamuta and the red 10, when you collect the frog and pellet by the bridge. Along those lines, what do you think is a reasonable max for DS?

Congrats, Rogue, on breaking the 600. That's a fantastic result, and you certainly deserve it, for your unswerving loyalty to Pikmin (even though it's getting close to two years' old now), if for no other reason.

Thanks for keeping me in the FoH list, too (despite it being a terribly embarrassing score). Obviously, I haven't been playing Pikmin lately (first Zelda, then SuperMonkeyBall 2), and I'm about to send my copy to my Brother-in-law who lives on the other side of the country, so I guess I won't be playing again any time soon.

But I am still visiting the boards almost everyday, just so that I can vicariously enjoy Pikmin success! I'm really looking forward to seeing where Mike and Rogue (and cocoapuffs too) can take DS. We may well have another top score battle (a la Forest Navel) on our hands. I can't wait.

Actually i collect it as soon as i kill it. I have been getting good at the 3rd quater to make sure that i can transfer as many reds and yellows to blues as possible and i have been doing the last quater with 75-80 blues, which is just enough to collect the fiery with everything else.
I could easily kill the other fiery as well, but i would have trouble collecting it, but im sure a way could be found, so im guessing a reasonable max of 641. You would have to be extremely lucky to get that, like all frogs drop blues since you wont have enough time to change, no deaths, pikmin which will grab the pellets/carcasses and not walk around and say aahhh.

The Distant Spring-627

No deaths, misfiled the red 10 pellet and yellow 5 pellet by mistake. I was so excited at the end of the run i didnt realise they were back already until it was just too late.

This was my fastesr run ever, even beating the one i was doing the other day which i messed up on. I had about 5 seconds left at the end, and i definitely feel i could collect the other fiery blowhog. Unfortunately i didnt tape this run, so when i start playing again the tape will be recording, hoping for an even better run.

Im going to cry now knowing this would have been a 633 if i hadnt been so stupid.

Holy crap, the king is alive and well! Excellent work, Mike, that's uncanny and now even a perfect run of my untested 623 strat cannot top you.

Here's a thought - what about swapping the fiery blowhog for that last frog and 5 pellet in the smoky progg area? You would be looking at 636-638 instead of 641, but you'd have the pikmin to collect those two, provided you head out from the onions with 80 pikmin. Again, great work continuing to do the impossible.

rob, good to know you still check the board, but sending pikmin away simply will not do. Your brother-in-law will no doubt get hooked and you may never see it again, so I suggest you buy another copy...

Thanx guys :)

I have you both to thank for my new score, Rogue for showing me the grass patch by mamuta which was very helpful as well as other useful hints, and Ahlyis for showing me that i can kill the 3 dwarfs by swarming saving a lot of time and for other hints as well.

I have been on fire today, my run of 627 has been followed by runs of 622,606,617. The 606 was using your advise rogue and ignoring the fierys and getting the extra frog, it was great advice and i shall experiment a bit more with it. I still have a few hours tonight to play to try and increase my score.

Mike, out of curiosity, are you using my version of the beginning? Or are you still using the one you used on the 620 video?

Mike! 627! Fantastic.

This is just great. It's wonderful to see this topic firing again, with yet another high score surge. Good on ya, Rogue, for putting the heat on Mike. Now all you need to do is turn it up a notch by pipping his 627 (and you just might be right about having to buy another copy...).

Thanx Rob and DS54 :):)

The answer to your question Ahlyis is im using my 620 strat almost exactly, except just killing a fiery and putting pikmin on it straight away. I only need the same speed as my 620 run to do this so i didnt see the need to rework my strat too much. I do prefer your first quarter, its just that it would require too much change in the rest of my strat too fit it in seamlessly.

Having watched my 620 run on the dvd yesterday, my first half on the 627 was much faster, but i was only just ahead at the three-quarter bell, but i think thats more to do with me having an absolutely perfect third quarter in my 620.

I got a 610 last nite, and after the day finished and the score came up on the screen, there was a red sun in the background i cant remember seeing before. I seem to remember rogue saying something about it in his 442 run, has anyone else seen it?

Anyway rogue, I think i might revise that potential maximum to 646, i think i could kill one fiery and leave it, then kill and collect the frog and five pellet in the smoky progg area, and collect the fiery after getting mamuta and the red 10. Also with one fiery out the way i might be able to collect the yellow and red 1 pellets in the fiery blowhog area, so i might be able to squeeze out 650. That would be my finest achievement ever if i managed that though, and would require a tremendous amount of luck.

Mike, that red sun shows up from time to time and Iām pretty sure itās just a random thing. The first time I saw it was when I got 442 on FN and the second time I saw it was when I got 299 on FT, so at the time I thought it was a signal of a perfect score, but we know now that canāt be right.

650 sounds about right, and would be a tremendous feat. Like you said, you would have to get lucky with the frog pellets since the extra time to kill collect the added stuff would cut into your switching time. Ever thought of getting a 1 pellet out of one of the flint beetles?

I wish I could push you more, but my luck has turned. Last night I had two full runs in a row where out of 18 total frogs I got one blue 5. The whole night I think I saw a total of 5 or 6 blues 5ās, granted, it was only a half dozen or so full and partial runs, but itās still frustrating. Iām still going though·
