These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Distant Spring: 503
Combined Total: 2101

w00ty w00t w0000t!!!

A 32 Pikmin jump on Distant Spring! I love it!! Where does this put me on the leaderboards? *checking*

A 12th/13th place on the Distant Spring board

A 4th/5th place on the Combined Total board. I've actually got a higher combined total than Snapdragon now.. pliiz come back Snap. I'm sure you can do better on FN and DS.

Ahh.. that was my first run tonight.. don't think I'll play more.. It'll probably ruin my great feelig right now!

On another note.. I finally passed 2100 now! Satisfaction!! next.. 2200.. X)

Forgot to post this earlier - Welcome back cocoapuffs, and congrats to you and SuperStein on breaking 2100. Thanks TomatoMan for putting my pic up.

Finally got around to getting a new account with my name spelled right. Rogue7 lives!

Congrats Stein, GG, XquietusX; welcome back cocoapuffs, and welcome to the boards Rogue7. Hey. Anyone know what happened to Rouge7? ;-)

Satisfaction for me:

IS -- 259

Left the yellow 5 behind, and got everything else in. The 264 is certainly do-able, given that the last of my pellets were going in at the hurry-up and I didn't even THINK to quickly grab 10 blues and take them in for that yellow 5 :P. Thing is, though, I've moved on to FT now to try to break 250, but I think the best that can be done without tackling the snagret is 240 odd. I'll just have to wait and see.

Ok, for those who have this thread marked and don't check the rest of the board, I'm creating a new topic to discuss the 50 total Pikmin challenge. That'll keep us from filling up the Challenge Mode thread with Main Mode posts.

Stein! Curse you!!! :)

I have to confess that I've been trying to get more 569s (three 568s recently... all late MDs... grrr) and 299s lately after becoming ashamed at how some of you are maxxing your scoreboards out. I've also been playing Metroid, which I admit I'm starting to understand the hype about, even though I still think playing an FPS with a joystick instead of mouse+keyboard feels like driving a forklift around - no quick 180s, everything feels slow. But it is an interesting game and they paid attention to the reward structure in the gameplay.

But I've got to get back and pull a 442 at least on FN, which I'm nowhere close to, and I'd like to get my DS score up over 550. That's the eventual goal. Eventual. :P

Posted by SuperStein - 1/11/2003 2:37:13 PM

That was the exact words I needed to hear before I go back to Pikmin TomatoMan! I'm leading, for now. I'm quite sure that you're just saying that your're playing Metroid, however, Pikmin is practically glued into your cube! As I am typing this post you are probably hitting Distant Spring and Forest Navel with enormous powers! I'm sure that you willl get your 442, but when you reach this, I'm quite sure that you'll see the small changes you can do which'll bring your score up to 452. I've currently taken a break from Forest Navel. I will return to the level when the 482 has been cleared for download. Wait a minute!!! You have the tape!! Ah-ha, your plot has been revealed. I'm sure that you've already converted the tape and are on good way to achieve your fourth perfecto! But you won't post the score 'til everyone else here is able to download it. Then you'll print it out in bold so it'll probably be permanently tatooed on my cornea! LOL! I don't think this will actually occur, but who knows? I sure hope that that iDVD 3 or what ever comes out soon, that will atleast pull you away from Pikmin for awhile.

Anyway, back to Pikmin scores. No new highs yet. Had a 499 on DS, dunno what I did, but I probably fumbled away an entire spot on the sun-meter in the last part of the day. I'm convinced that I could atleast have gotten a 510 or something around that. Hopefully I'll play more tomorrow. But I've got an essay which is.. well... idiotic.. you would probably hail my teacher TM. He gives us essays constantly! Argh!

been playing all the stages and have topped my scores in every stage except DS, been trying new strategies there but nothing that worked, and i've passed the 2000 mark, yay

here's my highs
IS - 269
FOH - 537
FN - 420
DS - 530

so far i've been pretty much using all my own straties, but i think i might have to pick up some pointers through some of the guides in the challenge mode faq soon, as my scores are getting hard for me 2 pass now

Ough! Distant Spring is a cruel level. Sometimes those Wollywogs tend to smash all of my precious Pikmin troopers. I think I'll have to work that Mamuta into my strat now. but I'd hate to ruin a good run on that sucker smacking my Pikmin into the ground again!! But he's worth it! :)

Noticed something strange this weekend on DS. Normally when I collect the pearl that has the two bridges that lead to it, I put two blues on the short side, seven on the long, break the pearl and put three blues on that. Never any problems with this, the bridges finish, the pearl returns and I don’t have to be anywhere near it. Trying a different approach, I put 12 blues (3 and 9) on the bridges, break the pearl and leave it there, then when I return to collect the blues who built the bridge, I just put three blues on the pearl and go on my merry way. The problem is, it seems as soon as the pearl gets out of view or “off camera”, it stops moving. When I noticed that the pearl wasn’t back yet, I went over to see if I threw a guy too far and it didn’t grab it or forgot about an enemy, but there is was in the middle of the bridge, with three pikmin carrying it. Once I approached and got it on screen, it started moving. Has anything similar happened to anyone else? Anybody know why it does this? I don’t see why this is different than getting it moving before the bridges finish…

Rouge! That happened with me once too! Inmy strat I leave 4 on the short bridge and 10 on the long one very early in the day. Then later I come back with 16 blue ones. I pop the PCC and put 3 on the pearl, then i kill the mini borb where the gate usually is, put three on that as well. And collect the blue 10 where there normally is a ship part. But on one run the pearl was just going in circles on the middle of the bridge!! But when I looked closer at it (walking towards it that is), it started to cross the last part of the bride. Only happened to me once though, and I have no clue to why it occured!

I had that pearl stick once. I put 2 on the short bridge, 3 or 4 on the long and 3 on the pearl. Nothing different from run to run, but one run the pearl never crossed the bridges when they finished. When I ran over there, it was doing just as you all described except that it was circling before the bridges instead of in the middle. As I approached, it fixed itself and started back. It looks to be a random glitch that, thankfully, doesn't happen very often. Too bad MD's aren't as rare.

Congrats on everybodys new scores.

I have now got 5 278s on IS. On to FT now where i have 3 299s.

I have never had any problem with the pearl on distant spring, although i have noticed glitches with the score counter on distant spring, if, when the puffstool carcass goes in the onion, i am facing the other way i notice only some of the score goes on, and the rest goes on when i look back at the onion. Anyone else had this?

Nice work on DS Superstein, I’ll need to bump my score up to make you work a little harder…
Mike, haven’t noticed that puffstool glitch, but DS seems to be a popular place for glitches. I’ve seen a pikmin grab a 1 pellet, just start shaking and never move it, my counter show I have 100 pikmin with me but 99 in the field, and MD’s so late that a frog is on it’s side and I’ve got my whole crowd moving on and then the counter goes down. I seem to remember Ferret having a run where his score just stopped going up, but the final analysis screen had the correct score.

I’ve also noticed, on all levels, that enemies like frogs and puffstools seem to “freeze” when they are off camera and neither you nor pikmin are within range. I’ve even heard a frog jump, leave the area, and saw it drop when I returned a few minutes later. The time that flint beetles are up also seems to be camera time. My guess is that this is not a glitch, but intentional, a way to possibly save action for when it is seen…

I agree, Rogue. A key part of my Impact Site strategy involved immediately turning the camera AWAY from the breadbug so that he's off-camera, which prevents him from grabbing the red by the firespout, and gives me time to pick the blues and knock down the blue flowers so he pops up and grabs those instead.

One of my favorite visual oddities in the game is when the pikmin periodically manage to lift a 5-pellet and carry it on its edge like a balanced coin, with a couple hanging off the top... don't see it that often, but it's always funny.

TM

Posted by Ahlyis - 1/14/2003 6:45:16 PM

I think it's a matter of saving processing power. The game keeps Pikmin and Olimar as active entities. Enemies and other things around them stay active as well. That takes a lot of CPU to handle. In order not to overload things, anything which is not near Olimar or a Pikmin gets suspended in whatever state it was last in. It resumes when Olimar or a Pikmin comes near it again. that's my guess anyway.

There are some exceptions of course. The breadbug on FN during the main game for example. He stays active and moves about on his own regardles of Olimar or the Pikmin's presence.

yay, i beat my score on distant spring by 11

Distant Spring - 541

had a couple slow parts and like 6 deaths, but i sped up at the end with having 97 blues out and cleaned up the water as best i could, but didn't think it'd be pikmin worthy to change some of the pellets to other colors, so i misfiled a red 10, a red 5, and a yellow 5(if either of those frogs would of dropped a blue 5, my score woulda went up more) and i still have worked mamuta into my strategy, he just doesn't seem worth it to me anymore, i also ignored the big bulborb near the bridge cause i never had enough pikmin at the same time to kill him in the last 1/4 of the level, i hope this score keeps me in the top 10 cause it takes me 2 many tries to get any good runs, later

Posted by Rogue7 - 1/15/2003 8:28:46 AM

XquietusX, do you mean the bulborb by the bridge to the beach with the pearl? If so, doesn't it wake up when the pearl passes?

rogue7 - yeah, that's the one i mean but i never had him wake up on me, and i've had the pearl(and the blue 1 pellet) just go past him without waking him up every time(although i have never watched the pearl go past him, maybe it does wake him up and he goes back to sleep by the time i see him again, but i've never lost the pearl to him), i think this saves a lot of time for me to do other things at first, but i need to work him into my strategy near the end yet

and i got a new high with finally clearing everything in the level with 12 deaths

Final Trial - 287

and i think i can make the 10th spot on combined scores now and push off grenade guzzler, unless his score went up more than i thought

[apology for the double post]
Okay, I have 298 on Distant Spring. I'm only getting 2 of the Pearly Clamclamps: the one in the back where the Chronos Reactor is in the main game and the one where the Gluon Drive is. There's no time left for me to get the third one (where the Massage Machine was).
I'm going to alter my strategy and try to get all 3 pearls. Or maybe I'll just play Forest Navel.

welcome DistantSpring54, your score for forest of hope is a good score, i myself was stuck at 408 for ages. Dont feel downhearted at some of the scores we have here, as snapdragon said, many of us have played each individual level hundreds of times, i know i have.

Finally, after some number of tries between 3 and 8 . . .

Distant Spring: 300

A slight modification to my strategy got me time to bring in additional Pikmin. Instead of waiting until later in the day to battle the Puffstool near the landing site, I battled it at about 8 AM using the Pikmin I had grown with the pellets and Dwarf Bulborbs around the landing site.

Posted by robluvsnic - 1/19/2003 6:50:25 PM

Welcome DistantSpring54. Glad to see you here, considering things seem to have really quietened down here lately. I blame the lack of posts on the fact that Mike has now virtually perfected the entire Challenge Mode. Nothing left for him to do, see?

Anyway, I've got a report of my own:

FT -- 247

I'm really aiming for 257 (or 259, if I've calculated correctly). That's the max I can get without tackling the snagret. I've come so close a number of times now, but either that frog stuffs me up (restart) or the BLL drops three yellow 10s, which completely throws out the numbers.

Despite the fact that it's quiet at the moment, it has been a while since there's been a top20 update. Anyone?
---
Please don't beat me!

Posted by DistantSpring54 - 1/19/2003 7:11:57 PM

I tried FT challenge only 3 times. The third time, I battled the wollywog with only 15 blue Pikmin. Well, I started with 15. Beat it with 4. But that was the run I got 155 on. My FT scoreboard looks EXACTLY like this:

1. 155
2. 133
3. 120
4. 000
5. 000
Not kidding here.

By the way, I got my FoH 387 without having anymore than 10 yellows ever grown. Part of my FoH, FN, and DS strategies is to minimize use of yellows. I don't implement this strat in the Impact Site because the misfilings cost me too much and I could only manage about 160 without yellows.
I was actually impressed that I got 198 in the Impact Site WITHOUT getting the blue 20 or ANYTHING behind the stone gate (with the exception of the yellow 5 you can reach without bombing)! That shocked me. I must be close to perfecting the part of the level that doesn't require bomb-rocks.

I need to find some way to get all 3 Distant Spring pearls, though, and preferably both puffstools. I can only get a maximum of 2 pearls and 1 puffstool. (sighs) That will be strategy #004. But I'll first try to improve/speed up in strategy #003.

Posted by DistantSpring54 - 1/19/2003 7:15:19 PM

i mean 197 in impact site

Posted by robluvsnic - 1/19/2003 10:33:22 PM

welcome to the board distantspring54

i agree with robluvsnic, i think we do need to update the top 20 list, it has been a while

i just got 1 new high, but keep getting really close to beating my distant spring score of 541 and tied it once in a run where i lost 9 pikmin to a bulborb cause of stupidity, if i can get a good couple runs where nothing stupid happens, i think i'll have it

Forest of Hope - 557

Posted by DistantSpring54 - 1/20/2003 6:59:07 AM

I almost forgot something:
Forest of Hope - 391
and I had a red 10-pellet IN THE PROCESS of beaming up; if I had just had a few more seconds I would have broken 400.

Final Trial - 203
A 44-point improvement. I decided to battle Beady Long Legs this time.
against the wollywog as well I had 20 Pikmin but I only lost 4 this time instead of leaving with 4.

Posted by Rogue7 - 1/20/2003 8:37:44 AM

Welcome DistantSpring54.

New high:

DS - 552
Combined Total - 2150

This was a strange run, I was a little unlucky, made good time and tried to mess it up as much as I could (not intentionally of course). The frog by the bridge to the beach pearl dropped a red 5, so I collected the frog carcass and left the pellet to collect later. As I returned I saw the pellet under the bridge, but when I got closer it disappeared. I threw some guys close to where it was but none of them moved. Either it actually disappeared or it was directly in the middle bridge, out of range and I just couldn't see it because I rotated the camera. Anyway, I had 8 deaths, only a few MD's, the rest were my mistakes and misfiled a 5, so still some room for improvement...

Another note: I hate mamuta. This was the first run I killed him and he only pounded a few pikmin into the ground.

I used to leave Mamuta right until the very end, if I had time left over after bringing in everything else in my strat. That way I figured that it didn't matter if your pikmin got pounded into the ground, so long as you had 8 to carry him back to base.

After a while, though, I just dropped him altogether from my strategy, and tried to incorporate other enemies/pellets. But the thing is, I never thought to kill him by swarming him :P (Sometimes I wonder whether I'm really cut out for this game...)
