These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

FN - 412
Combined Total
2041
I'm almost up to ya GrenadeGuzzler! ;-)
This
was an absolutely perfect run with my strat. I mentioned before that
I could get an extra 2 for a 405 total, right? Well, I tweaked it a
bit more and managed to get every 1-pellet and 5-pellet. Before, I
had been leaving the yellow 5 near where the Puffstool is in the
main game, the blue 1-pellet that everyone leaves behind a blue for
later use on and one of the 1-pellets by the lake and the red 20. I
knew I could work in that last 1-pellet by the lake, didn't realize
I would be able to work the other two pellets in as well.
So
I tweaked the strat and managed to get everything. The last pellet
got sucked up just before the timer hit 0. The counter was still
clicking up when the screen went black.
I left behind the
yellow 10 in the water behind the onions, the yellow 20 by the lake
and the 3 big pellets in the lake (y10, b10 & b20) for a total
of 70 missed. There is no way with my pattern I can work any of
those into it. My pattern really is maxed out. Obviously I need a
new pattern! :-)
I just like that I was able to get over 400
with a pattern completely different from anything else I've seen.
:-)

Mike, 462 on FN, well that's just absolutely
...
Nope, I'm sorry. What with both yours and Nathan's
achievements of late, I no longer have the energy to try to find
some worthy superlatives. Besides, amazing scores from you are just
becoming too much of a regular occurrence *yawn*
;-)
Seriously, though, well done. And well done, too, to
Ahlyis, TM, Stein for all their worthy accomplishments, and to
Nathan for his 624 on DS . . . What? Nathan hasn't got 624 on DS?
Well, let's just wait and see, shall we? Consider it pre-emptive
applause.

recorded. The proper score, then, is this:

I just got in a pikmin frenzy after like 6
monthes without playing it and beat some of my high scores and saw
they could make it in the top 20 lists, so I figured I'd post my
scores:
Impact Site - 232
The Forest of Hope - 432
The
Forest Navel - 329
The Distant Spring - 399
The Final Trial -
248
They're not great but at least I can make it in the top
20 lists, even if I am near the bottom

DS - 515
Combined total
2073
That's right, a 32 Pikmin jump! :-)
I finally
sorted out a pattern which seems to be working pretty good. Still
plenty of room for improvement. I'd guess that 550 is easily
possible if I could just get a clean run. Pellet colors from the
frogs really isn't much of a problem with my pattern. I don't think
I misfiled more than one pellet that run.

My jaw's been on the floor already for so long
now it can't go down any farther, so Mike's 462, fresh cap of the
Most Amazing Pikmin Achievement Ever(tm), is going to have to rest
on its own laurels. I've said "just amazing" so many times it's lost
all its meaning.
What I can to do fan the flames,
though, is say this: since Mike taped his 462, according to the
policies we've been using, he just knocked Nathan off the DVD. We
use the high scoring run, and in the case of ties, we take the
earliers, so we've got my 278, Snap's 569, and Ahlyis's 299
(although Snap did 299 first, we don't have a tape of it, and it was
agreed at the time that we should favor variety when
possible).
The fact that Mike's European and that therefore
his tape is PAL is going to cause a little bit of a problem, because
my VCR can't play it - somehow we'll have to convert it, unless Mike
can fire up iMovie and burn a me DVD with the raw DV file, which
will be 3 gigs or so.
Anyway, what this means, assuming we
are able to use Mike's 462 (and that 462 is unbeatable, which we
previously thought about 422, 442, and 452, but we MUST be reaching
the ceiling if we aren't there already), is that Nathan is going to
have to win his battle with Mike for DS. He's ahead at the moment,
but it would be nice to see a lock-down score that seals the deal!
:) :)
(TM fans the flames and then scampers back behind a
tree to watch)
Oh, and TTT just rocked. Saw it
twice.
TM
PS. Welcome to newcomers to the board! Yes,
post those scores, all are welcome. There's a battle of the titans
happening right at the moment, but lots of fun to be had at all
levels.

Here's an interesting question... How the hell
did Snapdragon get 439 on Forest Navel?
The possibilities as
I see them:
1) He misfiled a pellet.
2) He had a 452 run minus
a 5-pellet and 4 1-pellets.
Option #1 is extremely doubtful.
This is Snap we're talking about here. There's no reason he would
need to misfile a pellet that I can think of.
That leaves
option #2, which also seems unlikely. I can believe leaving a 5
pellet in favor of one of the 10's, but 4 1-pellets? That seems
highly unlikely that he would have to leave 4 of them. I remember
Snap talking about how hard it was for him to work up to 439 when
Rogue was having the battle with Blackmage. Turned out that
Blackmage was making things up, but I doubt seriously that Snap is.
I just can't figure out how a 439 makes any sense.
Any ideas
anyone? Are you still out there Snap? If so, which pellets did you
leave behind?

Posted by TomatoMan - 12/19/2002 10:35:40 AM
Is it possible he did a 442 with one missed 1 and another misfiled?
Posted by Ahlyis - 12/19/2002 10:52:09 AM
Sure, it's possible. But would Snapdragon have
misfiled a 1-pellet? Which one would require misfiling? I can't
think of any. Remember, this wouldn't be a mistake. It would have to
be part of his pattern or he would have tried again until he DIDN'T
make that mistake.
Grenade, I'm not behind you any more
:-)
When we had the 442 on FN, I always felt that it wasn't
the max possible, even though I was nowhere near it. Even at 452, it
still didn't feel right. Now at 462, I'm feeling that we have
reached the max. The only pellet left is the yellow 20 that requires
the second bridge and is in a really awkward position to boot. I
gotta believe that 462 IS the limit until gameshark comes out and
removes the time restraints.

Ahhh! I'm boosting away from you
TomatoMan:
Forest Navel: 419
Combined Total:
1995
Actually, I've pasted Ferret with his 1988 too!
:)
I found a nectar method which boosted my time a little bit,
first 1/3 of the day went faster because of the flowered
Pikmin.
When you have collected every pellet in the start
area (67), you pick up the Pikmins around the blue and the yellow
onions. When you are going for the red ones c-stick all of your
Pikmin into the grass/nectar and dismiss them. Most of them will
flower themselves, and after that they'll dig up the nectar patches
and remove all of the grass. Then you can go and collect new
pellets, and when you come back and are ready to leave for the large
far away pellets with your chosen 100 ones, you can flower
practically everyone of them since it isn't any grass which will
stop them on their way to the nectar.
With my flowered Pikmin
I managed to collect almost every small pellets in the
end.
Pellets I left behind:
- Yellow 10 in the big
lake
- Yellow 10 in the water behind the onions
- Blue 5 in
the water
- Yellow 10 in BLL's lair
- Yellow 20 by the water
(requires the bridge)
- And four 1 pellets/pellet
possies
Maybe I'll play some more tonight.
The Two
Towers was absolutely marvellous! Two times TM? WOW! That's
impressive! I'm going to see it again on Saturday..! Looking forward
to it already!

Hey Stein, that c-stick/dismiss move over the
grass early on is a move I've been using for a while now (I even
think I mentioned it in the rundown on my strat earlier in this
thread). It's a useful move, since it removes that patch of grass
over the ledge between the red and yellow onions. But, for the life
of me, even with the honey wisps, I never manage to run with 100
flowered.

On another note, doing anything i can to avoid having

everything in exactly 40 seconds before the hurry up warning came
up. i was checking it on my watch.
i did have a couple of goes

well done stein.
i have been having
thoughts about a fn 482. I would have called it possible if the
bridge to the yellow 20 was the other way. i.e. starting from the
ledge rather than the floor. i could have put 26 blues i always have
at that point which i take into the puffstool area (and dont use) on
the bridge and they should automatically pick up the yellow 20 and
carry it someway home before i intercept on my way back and use them
on the pellets in the lake. i would just have to be faster so the
red 20 and yellow 10 in bll area dont need extra pikmin and i could
potentially get it back when i take a load of pikmin to get the 3
five pellets at the end and to top up the bll area pellets.
But the damn bridge goes from the floor so when they finish
they are on top of the ledge and wont automatically pick up the
piece.
well thats enough ranting for now. I am 99% certain
482 is impossible, but only 95% certain 462 is the
max.

You think that bites? Try this.
My GC
will no longer read discs. It's not just Pikmin, it's all discs. The
GC itself is on the fritz! :-(
I think that it's just dirty
and the laser can't read cleanly. From the sounds I can hear, it
seems like the motors and everything else are still
fine.

That totally sucks, Ahlyis. :( And I'd
guess the GC's bay is too small for traditional laser-cleaning
discs.
I guess I'd just get in there with a vaccuum cleaner
(with a soft attachment) first and try to suck out whatever might be
in, then maybe some pressurized air to try to blast it clean. I'd
say we're probably all out of warranty on our cubes. :( Hope you can
get it going again.

400 on FN! w00t! Improving on this isn't going to
be easy - I think I've got everything but the pellets in the water
and the yellow 20 behind the second bridge and the yellow 10 by the
tin can, the latter of which I assume most people ignore. I had a
blue 5 that didn't make it, and then there's a yellow 10, blue 10,
blue 20, blue 5, and blue 1 in the water, right? So that would be
452 if everything made it? Is that what a 452 looks like? (I'm not
building any of the bridges at this point except the one leading to
the red 20.)
Honest, though, there's zero chance of my
current method working for a score like that. I feel like I've got
the first basic understanding of FN, though, and I'm starting to
like it a little more. :)

Now that I have my free

water, but at least this time I was able to save the situation and
finish the run, with everything making it in right before the end.
For my strat, I borrowed heavily from SnapDragon's vid,
using some of his ideas such as using bombs on two bulbears and the
evil dwarf bulborb quartet.
My friend has a scanner, so I'll
see if I can't get him to scan a proof screenshot.

Following Nathan, I've put an asterisk by Mike's FN 462 because we
don't have a screenshot yet, although I think we all believe
him.
- I manually updated Mike's combined total from 2207 to
2217, although he didn't report this, but since it involves a lead
change, I thought we should do this. I'm presuming a 10-point
increase due to his 452 -> 462 jump on FN. Mike, if this is
wrong, let us know.
- How deep do we want the top combined scores
to go? Should we cut it off at 10 or let it grow a bit like the
others? We're up to 20 on most of the other lists, and it's a fun
list to work. Do we have enough room in the messages under the 4k
limit?
- As usual, please post corrections! I might have missed
something.

If you can send me your tape, I will pay to
have it converted over on this side of the pond (if you can bear to
part with it!) I'll return it as soon as I get it converted if
you're willing to do this. Drop me a line at
<tm@tomatoman.net> if you'd like to chat about
this.
That is, unless you think you can get that last yellow
10 and pull a 482? I think everyone will take your word as the final
answer on whether that's possible. My guess is it isn't, and your
472 can be etched in steel as the highest possible
score.
Congratulations!

It's great to see this board live and kicking
after such a long time! This game has surely given me plenty of
fun!
Mike: You probably know someone else by you who has a
VCR? Why don't you just hook 'em up and copy your tape? I do that
all the time here! ;-)
TomatoMan: I think the next update
must be with me in the lead! ;-) j/k
The Christmas holiday is
great! I can play alot of Pikmin now!!

[GasMans jaw hits the

Serious pat on the back to all you guys who've
been breaking the barriers in my absence (if anyone missed me ;) ).
Wow. Top work fellas. Wish I could get my Gamecube hooked back up to
the television in the living room, this portable tv stuff is killing
my gaming skills...
What? What gaming skills? Heheh.

Incredible, Mike. As unlikely as it may sound, I
was just reading through the posts over the weekend, thinking that
I'd recommend that you skip the yellow 10 by the tin can in favour
of the yellow 20 by the ramp, when -- waddaya know? -- you post a
472 using exactly that tactic. Cool.
Ahlyis: tragic news. My
condolences to you and sincere wishes for the speedy recovery of
your cube.
TM/Stein: keep it going guys. There's nothing like
a battle in this thread to keep the attention up.
Nathan: ...
Nathan? Where is Nathan anyway?
GasMan: Glad to see
you back.
Oh. One last thing:
FN --
360
At long, long last, I have finally done it. A meagre
feat when placed alongside some of the action that's been going on
lately, but still a proud moment for me. It should have been 362,
since that's what my strat gets me, and I really don't recall
missing any of the 1 pellets, but somehow one must have been missed.
Buggered if I'm going back in to try to get it, though! I'm off to
improve my DS, if I can.

212. :-)

Curse the the lack of a facility to modify
posts!
One other thing, TM, how is Stein able to be at 15 in
the DS list with a score of 430, when I'm at 17 with a score of 437?
:-) -- we can't let Stein get away with something he hasn't earned,
now can we? ;-)

Whoops! Sorry, Rob. Whoever does the next
update, correct Rob's score!
I was hoping to snap back ahead
of Stein today by pushing up my 400 on FN, but it was not to be.
Whatever groove I was in last week, I seem to have fallen out. But
I'll be playing over Xmas, as I'm sure you all will! Updates
soon!

Well, I'm getting closer, 452 on FN, just a
little more.....

So you'll be able to provide a screen shot
proving that you've achieved 452 on FN, will you
greatmagnus?
Me, I seriously doubt that you will be able to
do so. That's just my thought, of course. Feel free to prove my
suspicions unfounded.

Okay, I really need to know on how to be able to
work faster in FN and DS. Problem is strats don't usually work with
me (with the exception of Ahlyis' FoH strat) and I don't have a
freaking DVD player.
Sigh...

Greatmagnus: Send a pic to me! I'll host it!
:)
robluvsnic: Nice score, but please don't beat me.
:P
mikepharvey: I just thought of one thing. I dunno how many
Pikmin you have available, but I'll post it anyhow. Are you able to
sacrfice the blue 5 (?and blue 1?) in the water for the yellow 10?
It would bring up the score a notch, and if anyone could do it, you
are him!
TomatoMan: I survived the night! Look to the east!
Then you'll gaze in the direction of Norway, where your superior
competitor dwells. Hope I'll break my FN score
today.
Something really strange happened to me last night. I
was having a superb FN run, I was just on schedule when the last
bell rang. So I put my Pikmin on the right pellets. When I have done
so, and are bringing the red 20 in BLL's lair back, I go looking for
the blue 20 from the big water. Beacause I need to put some extra
Pikmin on it so it'll make it in. But the funny thing is, I couldn't
find it, on it's regular route back that is. So everything makes it
in but that big pellet. I stand back with two opions for what that
have happened:
1. It took another route and didn't make it back.
Not very likely, 'cause it has never done so before.
2.
The pellets just dissappeared. Even less likely, because I didn't
have any mysterious deaths.
Well, let's just hope this wont
happen again. My score ended up on 422, with the blue 20 it would
have been 442, rouge's fantastic feat wich blew SnapDragon away.
Which reminds me, I have actually bumped SnapDragon a spot down on
the scoreboard... =/

I was going to make a back up copy when i get
round to doing it. There is two hours of practice/failed runs on the
tape before my 472, so i thought i would just tape the 472 on to
another tape and send it to tm for him to keep. I was thinking
putting my 462 on the tape as well if tm wants to see it.
Reviewing my tape, I made a couple of very minor mistakes,
the yellow 20 for instance was just on the ledge inbetween the two
bridges near the blue onion where it should of been according to my
plan, but just a little too far and i had to go up the bridge to
whistle a few remaining blue pikmin off it as i couldnt reach from
the ground, this cost be about 5 seconds, but all the blue pellets
in the water made it back in time.
I am racking my head
about the last yellow 10, and thinking that i cold get it the same
time as the blue1,5,20 in the water but i would need 10 extra blue
pikmin from somewhere. Maybe i could ignore the red 10 near
puffstool area which i usually get with about 7 reds and 3 blues,
put 5 of these reds on the blue 10 and make the pellet still go to
the blue onion and make the posies red which would use the remaining
two reds, then the ten blues i save i could get the yellow 10 in the
water. I could then withdraw all the pikmin off the yellow 10 when i
am the onions, i will review video to see how long it takes for the
water pellets to get back because i think im usually at the onions
at that time anyway. i could then get the red 10 at the end when i
get the 5 pellets and the yellow 20. I think it is unlikely but it
sounds possible. Maybe fn is perfectable. But if it is possible it
will take a long time, as i dont know if i could ever go at that
speed again.
Tell me if you think this is
plausible.
Oh and gasman, just the other day i was wondering
what happened to you. I perfected impact site last night, thats
three times now. Hit the beetle 9 times.Whats your score up
to?
Stein, which of rogues strats are you using to help you?
I used tips off his 422 one but i think he changed his strat for his
442 and 452 strat.
Now im off to play fn again, i will keep
the video running, but dont expect a perfect, it is very unlikely
that it is possible.

Posted by Mikepharvey - 12/23/2002 4:57:37 AM
And rob, i left the yellow 10 in the water in
the big lake with the blue 20,5,1,10 in it. I used the yellows to
build a bridge to the yellow 20 and carried on. Then when i went to
get the red 20 i threw 20 blues on the pellet and then went into
puffstool area collected the pellets in there and intercepeted the
yellow 20 on my way out. I actually have 26 blue spare, but if i
throw all of them on the yellow 20 it is too fast and i cant
intercept on the ledge. I used to leave the yellow 10 by the tincan
out, but my 462 run meant i had to include it.

sound very different from mine though!

plausible.
Are you kidding? You are asking us whether
it's plausible? NONE of us is within 20 of your score and you want
us to tell you what is plausible?!?!?! Um, ok, sure. It sounds
plausible to me, but what the hell do I know?!

Bad
news on the GC front. It looks like it's not a dirty lens. I can
turn on the GC and it will load the game just fine and even start
playing. But then I eventually get a 'can't read disc' error. It
looks like there's a bad capacitor or something else which is
failing. :-(
My GC was bought less than a year ago though. I
think I got it back in February or so. I've only been 'here' since
then, not since the game's initial release. What I'm saying is that
my GC may still be under manufacturer's warranty. Only problem is, I
don't remember where exactly I bought it from and I can't find the
receipt.
