These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

This just gets better and better! Nice one Nathan. I can't wait to start work again tomorrow (!), because I just know that there'll be some major developments over the next 12 to 14 hours!

*munching popcorn and watching excitedly*

"Just amazing" begins to lose its punch after being repeated so many times, so I'm going to just hold my breath. Nathan, please TURN ON THAT FRIGGIN' VCR!!! Not that I don't believe you can top your 612, but let's start making the record!

(I bought a new VCR last night after my 10-year-old soldier finally gave up the ghost. My new one is stereo (man VCRs are cheap now - this was a $90 wal-mart job and it's better than the $300 one I'm replacing), so I'm thinking about re-ripping the runs; might get nominally better quality, and they'll be stereo instead of mono if they were recorded in stereo. My 278/IS was probably mono, alas, but I'm sure some of you guys have better equpiment than me.)

Oh man, I wish I'd been taping my runs last night. I went back and played FT again just for some variety. I had a perfect run going, and I do mean PERFECT! The frog died cleanly and smoothly. The Snagret was no problem, came up slow the second pass. And BLL died in what has to be a record time for only 13 yellows. It was all flowing exquisitely. I got everything in and did that same wild Pikmin throw off like I do in the video Tomatoman already has. And then, just as I was tossing the last of the Pikmin in wild abandon ... The "Hurry Up" message came up! That's how freaking fast I had the level done!!! It was truly an amazing run. I really wish I'd been taping.

I now have 4 299's and a single 298 on my FT high score board. I'll have to fix that last score too. :-)

In other news...

DS - 467
Combined Total - 2016

A nice improvement of 18. And I have to credit Ferret somewhat on this. I watched his 569 video last night before leaving work and it gave me some ideas for my own runs. But I need to get a more consistent pattern down. My pattern here is more of a patchwork than a smooth, calculated pattern. I should map it out like I did for FN. I know my score would increase. The 467 run was good, but far from perfect. I wasted a bunch of time going back to pick up some pellets that I didn't have enough Pikmin for the first pass. Time that could have been spent elsewhere if I'd been better organized.

Better get your game on Grenade, or I'm gonna leave ya behind like I did poor Tomatoman! ;-)

ouch! *rimshot*

There's no denying I've been dusted lately. :) I've got to nail that 569, and then I'll get back to levels where I can make big improvements (i.e. all the rest) and come leapin' back after ya Ahlyis!

I simply need to bring up my FN score... I need to be above 400 before I leave that level... Think I'll play some more tonight...
And Nathan.. Well... I think silence is a proper way of telling you that that is a great feat. But I'm sure Mike will get a new score up soon! ;-)

w00t! Broke my old record with crappy 2 Pikmin! ;-)
My combined total has been raised to:
Combined Total: 1924

Smooth run...! No bridges though.. and one misfiling.. lost 5 on that one...
Well, 8 more and I've broken 400!

Sloppy run, 15-20 died. Only 2 pearls, room for lots of improvement :-)

Came home tonight and thought I'd do a warm-up round before dinner, in preparation for another grueling set of runs tonight. You can guess the rest. First try, easy as pie.

Forest of Hope - 569

w0000000000000000000t!!! :)

Yes, a small accomplishment in light of the epic battle presently being waged, but hell, a perfecto is a perfecto, and it's my VERY long-awaited second. whee!

Thing is, the run felt clunky out of the box. I mishandled a lot of stuff early on, threw my timing off by a good amount, and had bad luck on some of the flower drops, but figured I'd just plod through it anyway just to remember my route and shake off the rust - and what happened was a completely ordinary, plodding, um, perfecto. I wasn't taking it seriously as a run until the final leg, when I handled the last pearl without getting any munched and realized I hadn't had any mysterious deaths, my hands began to tremble, as I realized "this could be it!!"

I haven't posted a picture of my overall scores for quite a long time, so here it is. Please ignore everything except the IS and FoH scores, the rest is really quite pathetic.

http://tomatoman.net/pikmin/tm-scores-12-11-02.jpg

I'll post a rundown of my strategy next - I've got to say, I'm really pleased with this one, especially after I tried and failed to use Nathan's and hybrids of a few others. This one was really original (as far as I know) and I think works really well!

Now it's back to Final Trial, I think, as I try to close the enormous gap Ahlyis has put between us and claw my way back to the top 10 overall. It's going to take dramatic improvements on at least two levels to do that.

I love that this game is a year old and we're all still playing it so obsessively. Shiggy has a real winner here!

Posted by TomatoMan - 12/12/2002 8:50:16 PM

So here's my FoH strat. It'll be a little on the brief side in some places.

Start out and collect all the pellets in the middle, VERY QUICKLY. I do blue, yellow, red, the 1s and then the 5s in that order. By the time I've got the red 5 underway, the blue 5 is landing. Pick a couple of blues so you've got 7 or so and head out by the blue onion. Kill the two dwarfs and bring them back with blues. Pick the remaining blues and as many reds as you can get before they land. When the dwarfs land, take all the idle pikmin (you should have 27 or so) and head out towards the water.

Carefully kill the three dwarfs right in front and the dwarf bulborb to the left. Just those. Put two reds on each and then one of anything on each to get them going, and then swarm them once they're in motion to get them going fast. They should ALL come back red.

Run back in and pick the 8 blues from the earlier dwarves, any yellows you might have missed, and then all the reds. You'll have 67 all together. Flower them.

Run out towards the bridge with your 67 and swarm the two dwarves. Leave the corpses. Put five yellows on the bridge, then swarm the sleeping bulborb. Leave it. Carefully swarm the two dwarf borbs. Continue towards the gate and swarm the other bulborb. Put six reds and four yellows on him, yellows first so you end holding a red. Turn back and put reds on the three red 1s, the two dwarf bulborbs, then another 6 red/4 yellow on the bulborb closest the bridge. The first bell usually goes off here.

Seperate your pikmin into colors and get your yellows and reds, whatever's left, and add them to the five yellows working on the bridge. You should have 22 blues in a clump. Grab them and hit the water. One each on the blue 1s, leave the 10. Put all 20 on the bridge by the yellow 20.

Run back to the middle island; as you arrive, the pikmin working on it should be finishing. Run right up onto it from the water and put 3 reds and 2 yellows on the yellow 5; take the 11 you have left back towards land. Put 3 yellows on one of the dwarf bulborbs. Knock down the flowers; try to time it so you get yellows or reds, since you're out of blues. If you get blues, you'll have to manage them back in the middle. Get the 1s going, get the last dwarf by the bridge going, and return to base.

Here you want to pick about 15 reds as fast as you can, and hopefully you don't have to manage 1s that need to change hands as they come back in. Whistle everybody; you'll want about 65 for this next phase. You'll have a mix of flowers and non-flowers. Take your 65 out towards the bridge.

Dismiss them all and take your yellows and blues; you should have 16. Run over the bridge to the middle island. The 20 blues should just be finishing; lobs some yellows over to help if they haven't yet. When they do, get your 36 all together. Throw 10 blues over the side to the blue 10. Throw 6 blues back towards the middle island. Take the rest, 20 heavy with yellows, and drop them all on the yellow 20. Make sure they pick it up, and RUN back with your 6 blues.

Get your reds, and run over to the cliff by the blue 10. Throw up all your reds and blues, and run around through the water, by the 4 dwarf bears and the sleeping borb, and whistle them. Be very careful here. With this concentration of reds, about 55 pikmin in all, you can sometimes swarm the borb, but if he's sitting on a bump or you have bad luck, he might munch a few. When I'm feeling cautions I rain on him, I don't think it's very much slower. Get your 6 blues on the blue 10, then throw 4 reds on it and 10 reds on the borb to get it clear. Go up to the four dwarves with your 35 reds. This is the most dangerous part. Even with 100 you can't swarm four and expect not to lose one or two, so dance with them and try to draw them in pairs or singles. Assuming you get them with no losses, put 6 on each and rush back to base.

Continued in next post!

Posted by TomatoMan - 12/12/2002 9:10:15 PM

Back at base, pick the rest of your reds and hopefully the borb, bears and blue 10 are coming along quickly. You will probably have to wait a few seconds for the borb. Try to hurry it in if you can. Gather up your 100 and flower them. The second bell usually goes off here. Your pikmin count should be 201 as you head out.

Take your swarm of 100 flowers and head out by the blue onion. Swarm the three dwarf borbs and knock down the flowers. Put three yellows on the bridge by the bulborb and then swarm him with your 97. Head towards the red 20, swarm the dwarf borb, the two dwarf bears, the other dwarf borb, and the flowers by the yellow 10. Leave them all. Go out towards the other gate and swarm the two dwarf bears, then come back to the borb by the red 10. Swarm him with your 97. Put 6 reds and 4 yellows on the red 10, reds first so you end holding a yellow. Go back to the can and toss two yellows at the bomb rocks, and dismiss the rest up against the side wall. Bomb the wall CAREFULLY and go in with your 87.

Swarm the three dwarf bears and the big one. Run towards the water and seperate your colors; grab your blues (you probably have 22) and put 11 on the bridge, well-centered so they don't fall off. Take the other 11 and all your yellows and a handful of reds and put the 11 blues and 9 yellows on the blue 20, and use the rest getting the three dwarf bears and the daddy going. Take your 48 remaining reds and blues and get over the bridge.

Swarm the borb. Rain on the bear. Get the bear going back with blues, since it's heavier and will get back a little faster via the water, and put 10 reds on the borb. Kick the perl out (I can usually do it with one rain of reds) and put 3 on it. You have 25 remaining; head off the cliff and back up towards the can. Put three each on the dead dwarf bears and the dead borb; try to keep a mix of reds and blues with the 9 you have left. Head back towards the red 20 and put three on the dwarf borb; if either of the flowers came down red or blue, get what you can; use the rest in threes picking up the dwarf bears by the red 20. If you have 1 or 2 left, hang onto them.

The yellows have finished the bridge; if either of the flowers by the three dead dwarf borbs came down red or blue and you have extras, get them going. Go up to the yellows, throw two at the bombs, bomb the gate, and come IMMEDIATELY back down. Put the three yellows on one of the dwarf borbs and return to base.

Take the 60 or so in a big mix from the onions, avoid what's coming in, and RUN back up towards the red 20. Put blues on the remaining dwarf borbs, clear the flowers that are left, and put 10 blues on the bear by the ramp. Head back towards the fire spout and the red 20. Clear any dwarves and flowers remaining, leaving at least 10 yellows and 20 reds. Get the yellow 10 and red 20 going, put everything you've got on them, and return to base. Get whatever's there and go back up to rush everything that's returning. You should have two full ticks left on the clock, I can't remember where the third bell goes off.

When everything's in, take your 100 and head right up to the other pearl. Swarm all three baddies and get them going back with an even mix of colors. Pop the pearl with reds and put six on it. Head back down with your 64 and hang a left into the final area.

Get the blue 5 and yellow 5 under way. If the sunset warning happens here or later, you're golden. Kill the rest of the baddies: carefully swarm the dwarf bear, the two dwarf borbs, and rain on the bear. Get them all going back and be sure to put 2 yellows each on the yellow 1s. Run back, rush everything forward with your extras, then get back to the middle. You'll have 536, and you can watch the rest come in and your score zing up to 569. Set off your fireworks and do a little dance!

Tomato, you are THE MAN! w00t! I'm glad you finally got it. I knew you'd do it eventually, and am thankful you provided more evidence that using other people's strats doesn't make anything easy. Good job figuring it out yourself. Rock over London, Rock on Chicago!

I've got something to show for my Distant Spring efforts now: I just finished taping a 611 run. It would have been 613 but for some reason I decided to misfile a yellow 5-pellet at the end even though I had plenty of time to pull down some yellows for it. Stupid. I thought I'd shattered my own record, though, so I didn't want to risk it not getting in at all. Ugh. So we have a DS 600+ on tape now. I don't even know whose tape we're going to use on the DVD, however. Mike was the first to 600 but I have the current record, so it's a toss up. You guys should decide our fates for us. Besides, I know Mike isn't about to roll over. He'll be taping a 620 soon for all I know. If I were given my choice I'd want to wait until both of us feel we either (a) can't get any more out of the level or (b) can't stand the agony of fighting Wollywogs any longer and do something terribly drastic.

That's all for now, still waiting for JimiThingR to post. Stupid procrastinator.

Thanks, Nathan. Props from the highest are props indeed! Mostly I'm happy to have my life back, at least for a little while until FT gets me by the throat.

While I'm on a posting spree, I'll drop this in. What do you all think of these as labels for total score?

500: beginner
1000: novice
1300: wannabe
1500: jet
1700: stud
1800: gangsta
1900: expert
2000: master
2100: demigod
2200: grandmaster

My total is now 1882, still a good ways off the top 10.

On the DVD, I'd say we should go with whatever the highest score is when we decide to do it, and if there's a tie, it should be the first to hit the high score. That's more or less the model we're using now, which is why we've got Snapdragon's 569 on the DVD even though lots of people have done it since.

My feeling is: you and Mike give it your best. I'm assuming you'll reach a point where you think it can't be improved any more. If you've got it taped (and you WILL, of course!), we go with whichever comes out on top!

(This all makes me wish DVDs could hold more - there are so many worthy runs, it's a real shame we can just barely fit one of each on it.)

Sorry, correction to the first part of my FoH strat. Just noticed it reading back over. Hopefully the mistake is obvious, but the correction is as follows, near the middle:

Run back to the middle island; as you arrive, the pikmin working on it should be finishing. Run right up onto it from the water and put 3 reds and 2 yellows on the RED 5; take the 11 you have left back towards land.

2 out of 5 down...

I finally got my 299 on Final Trial . As Nathan Said, he was there to witness this so if you can trust anyone, I think he would be sufficient. Also as he mentioned it was interesting to say the least.

I have a score board of 250's, 260's, and a 273. What is so interesting about my score was that, I had no 280's, I had no 290's or anything even somewhat close to 299. But on one miraculous try I landed the 299 and think I created my own little mark with this. If you do the math it turns out to be 299 - 273 = 26 . That's a 26 distance between my first and second place score. I have to admit, I'm pretty astounded by how this happened.

I apologize if I am not going to sit here and write my own little strategy on how I completed this level, I think its pretty straight forward. I'd rather save the embarrassment of my horrible writing skills to be displayed for everyone to see, so I know you'll take this on faith. I will eventually post a picture, or submit it to someone for verification.

TomatoMan, Congrats on your 569 I'm so happy for you. Nathan and I were talking today about your accomplishment, and we were both pretty happy you guaranteed the #10 spot. A perfect way to end the list... at least for now. And also Congrats to Nathan and Mike on their amazing scores on DS. I was just as astounded and happy as Nathan was last night to see him pull off another round in the DS competition. I know I'm going to save that level for last, seeing what these two guys are going through I don't see anyway that I am ready for that level. Even though I must say I spend about a entire year working on it, cause it is my favorite level in the game... Odd I think.

Anyway enough Ranting, I believe I'm going to conquer the 278 on IS first then move to Forest Navel, and I promise that I will equal Nathans and Mikes Score on that level...eventually. until then, Lets keep this going and keep improving our scores, most of us still have a long way to go. Also one quick thing, I have combined my scores and I have a combined total of 2032 Just to help you guys out a little there.

congratulations nath, you can have your crown back. i always knew i was just keeping it warm for you.
Ahylis, now you know why i wanted the scoreboard up quick.

i finished the 9 day no deaths wednesday night, day 7,8,9 were very easy and did not take long. played ds last night, but was making too many mistakes in the first half. in one run i was about half a spot behind schedule at half day, but carried on and over the next quater actually nearly caught up to where i was in my 609 run. if i can repeat my time for the first half, then i know a big score is on the way, i am thinking an extra wollywog(and 5 pellet it drops) , which would add 13 more, so hopefully around 620 is possible. start taping sunday/monday onwards.
Saw the guy this morning, unfortunately drunk and sleeping in the corridor. i will try and get the picture done tonight.

congrats to tm on his fantastic achievement.
also congrats to ahylis and jimiThingR on their perfects.

Long time coming, but for me it was worth the wait:

FN – 452

This was as good a run as I could have hoped for. I made no mistakes, all 100 of my pikmin were flowered, and I hit every time checkpoint ahead of pace. Finished when the countdown was at 4. The thing I’m happiest about is that all of the changes I made were before the first bell, my core “70-30” strat remained intact, although I did try several different patterns, I stuck with what I knew best. My big change was waiting for the breadbug to drop two blue 5’s, huge timesaver, but this was the most frustrating part. Whenever the damn thing finally did it, I would find a way to screw up or one of the grass patches would conveniently pick that run to have no nectar. Anyway, glad to finally reach this and look forward to actually getting a good night’s sleep.

TomatoMan, congrats on the 569! I knew it was just a matter of time, FT should be trembling with fear.

Jimithingr, excellent work on FT 299! I know how those big jumps go, my DS 520 is still 24 points higher than my second place score, gotta love those.

Nathan and Mike, what can one say? You guys are terminating with extreme prejudice, I doubt the smoke will ever clear.

Buy the Weigh, about the two bridges in FN, here’s what I found:
1. They have no effect on the pellets from the pearl area.
2. They do provide a shorter route for the pellets in the big lake. Whether the time difference is critical depends on your strat. The only pellet in my strat that needs the bridges is the blue 10 in the lake, which I need to get in before I make my final big sweep.

Rogue, you're finally back on top! I'm glad to see it. Sweet work, man. Now you can either relax, get on with your life, or join us in the never-ending struggle in the Distant Spring. The choice is yours. By the way, I read your strat through and was surprised at how similar a lot of it is to mine. Again, great minds think alike. : )

Got a new score:
Distant Spring - 613

An improvement of one. Sad. This is how it's going to be for Mike and me from here on in, though. Little improvements. This should have been a 615 but I screwed up with a blue one-pellet at the end and it didn't get in. I don't know how it failed, though.

Yesterday I had an amazing run with a grotesque ending. It should have easily been a 619. I was well ahead of schedule and all of the important Wollywogs dropped blues. I only had one mysterious death. But all of the sudden I was passing my blue onion when I noticed five sprouts growing. I thought, "What the hell...I know I've only lost one guy!" Well, I have this method of getting the last pearl that involves six blues sneaking it by the fiery blowhogs. It's almost foolproof. Almost foolproof. The FB's ended up smoking five of my guys and no one was left to carry the pearl. I counted everything up and I'm absolutely positive that, had the mishap not occurred, it would have totaled 619. I'm going to be reliving the experience in my nightmares for a long time (until I get 619 or better).

Anyway, now I know that 619 is possible. I'm not sure how much more can be gotten. That 613 (shoulda-been-615) run I just had was very close to my fastest yet. What needs to happen to break 630 will be an incredibly fast run with all blues from the Wollywogs. The combination of these two things is very rare. There are so many variables in this level that it's a matter of constant routine and improvisation. In other words, a pain.

I'm shooting for 620. Wish me luck.

245 on Final Trial. I was robbed - had a yellow 10 quivering underneath the onion when the timer hit 0. It was going well - no frog deaths, beating Beady handily with 13 yellows, but his last 1/8 health took forever and he squashed 5, and a yellow 10 only had 9 on it and didn't return. :P

Much better scores to come soon, hopefully. This is a tough one, the timing is really rough and I hate that friggin' frog.

FoH - 568

And this is my second 568 on the level!

First, I had a beautiful run, no mysterious deaths. I was right near the end, putting some reds on the yellow 20 to get it going. And then, as I'm turning around to go for the red 5, one of the damn reds falls in the water. I about broke my controller.

And on the second run, one yellow got too close to a bomb explosion. And I finished this run, with the score at 568, with a bit of time before the countdown even started.

So...close....

Unfortunately, Rob, smashing personal records is getting a mite difficult over here. But your encouragement is appreciated:

Distant Spring - 615

I'm not stopping until I get at least a 620 because it has slipped through my fingers several times. This run gave me all yellow and red 5-pellets except for one, so I misfiled two 5-pellets, a yellow one-pellet and had one death. Still not going to disclose any details, except that I am beginning to feel that 626 is the maximum with my strategy.

I have a verification screen shot of my scoreboard up at:

Good work on FoH, Dragorn. Keep at it...won't be long now.
Tomato, keep fighting the good fight in the Final Trial. You'll be posting marked improvements soon, I'm sure.
Ahlyis, smashing job filling that Final Trial list with 299's. From what I know, you're the first to do that on any level with a known-to-be-perfect score.
Congrats to anyone else I'm forgetting.

Skoal!

Thanks Nathan, FN was killing me. Since my last retirement was premature I’m weary of quitting now, but I’m some 100 points behind on DS and I slept so good this weekend… choices, choices.

I’m still trying to figure out how to get around building the two bridges, the time and 8 pikmin saved could be used towards that infuriating yellow 10 in the water. That lousy blue 10 in the big lake is the only thing stopping me now, but getting that in without the bridges means I’ll likely have to change my entire strat and seeing as it took me a month just to change ¼ of it, well, my tank might be empty.

Won’t be around for awhile, saved some vacation days for the holiday, so the screenshot will have to wait until January.

Nathan, nice screenshot! :-) I do have a question though...

Since your main game is only completed 3 times and only twice with all 30 parts you can answer this for me without me having to test it for myself. I'm currently working on mass producing Pikmin in the main game, but I want the surviving Pikmin to show on the scoreboard. I know that the Total Lost is only there if you get all 30 parts, but what about Surviving? Does your scoreboard have 2 or 3 entries for surviving Pikmin?

Posted by SuperStein - 12/16/2002 12:28:15 PM

Noooo! I screwed up! Oink! Argh!
Some explaining is appropriate. Well, having my best run so far on Forest Navel I managed to get all the big parts except the Yellow 10 in the water, and I skipped some small pellets in the end.. well.. many small pellets. The last red 20 from BLL's lair was on it's way with 24 Pikmin on it. Another red was just about to be sucked up into the onion. Here comes the stupid part, listen up. Just as the red 20 is about to be sucked up, I whistle a 100th of a second too early. So, it falls to the ground, in panic I swarm it with everything I've got! That's was the second idiotic thing, beacause then it had a majority of yellows, so I had to whistle it again and throw reds on it. This took about 5-6 seconds of my time. So I run towards the incoming 20 red, swarm it, so it has 50, and yes, lots of reds! However, unfortunately I was one or two seconds too late, it was under the onion, almost being sucked up when the screen turned black. The Score? A dissappointing 387, with that last 20 I would have got 407.. Ough..! I feel like crying :-P

But I like the game for being so frustrating, makes me wanna brake all of the records just for showing Olimar that I am the boss!

Again:
Location: The pearl
What did I do: A Pikmin slipped into the water when he was supposed to fight the clam.
How much did I lose: 10-15 sec
How much time for the last red 20 to get in: 2-3 sec
Score: 388

Luckily I can comfort myself with saying that I'll see LotR: tTT before you guys :)

OK, I've officially got the FT bug.

Final Trial - 275

A nice 30-point jump! woo! :)

This also finally puts me over the 1900 mark at 1913. Whee!

And after another hour of thrashing:

Final Trial: 294

w00t! Finally managed to get the blue 20 in. 2 md's to the frog, and I guess 4 lost in the Beady Battle. :P First time I managed to get everything in!

Interesting, with all the time I spent on FoH, how quickly my FT score came up when I returned to it. Hopefully my third perfecto isn't too far off, and then I can join the hunt on the terrifying FN and DS.

Ok, So I have been recently giving Impact Site, and Forest Navel. I have to say, I have been going insane trying to get my 278 in, and I haven't even gotten close yet. I hate that level, cause there is no time for breathing room. Its a frantic ride.
On the Forest Navel now, my top score is 390. But I haven't even gotten close to getting it. I hate that level too. I know I'm going to start have a breakdown eventually. So anyway I decided to stop for a day, and get some metroid prime in. Still not the same as pikmin, but a deserved break. more updates soon.

The Distant Spring: 539

I practically had a seizure when I saw the 539 in my results screen. I was able to bring in all 3 pearls, but I ignored a couple of dwarfs and all the enemies in the lake. I also had four mysterious deaths, three from a Puffstool and one from a Yellow Wollywog.

Ack! You're not going to believe it, I hardly do, but:

Final Trial - 299
Cumulative total - 1940

I thought, "one quick one before bed," and it all just fell into place!

http://tomatoman.net/pikmin/tm-ft-12-16-02.jpg

I got a little lucky here, because things DO have to go right for it all to work, but I have to say, it felt pretty calm. And all propz to Ahlyis, the FT king, for his strat which I admit I borrowed heavily from, including the Ahlyis-signature techniques of killing the grubs and the dwarves outside the arena with Olimar.

The minor things I did differently include:

- kill both dwarves on the beach with blues before heading to the bridge, and put 3 blues on the dwarf bear, taking 5 blues out instead of 8
- kill and collect the other landing area dwarf with the red 1 while bringing the blues back from the bridge
- have the 10 reds drop the frog under the blue onion instead of by the bridge before heading along the fire ridge, and be sure blues are the first ones back to the onion after the snagret battle so they automatically collect the frog before you return
- "long-fetch" the yellow 10 on the far ledge in the beady area from the ground (rather than running around the outside after the snagret), using the c-wiggle-stick yellow-fling
- push the last 10 along with the extra pikmin rather than leaving them at the arena for the return trip

Other than that, the snagret came up slow on the 2nd try, I got a good mix of drops that was easy to sort, and I had 30 blues at the end to collect the blue 20 with, so it got back in plenty of time. Everything was in when the counter hit 4.

(An aside: I also noticed that the yellow 5 up on the ledge came down by the dwarf borbs and nectar instead of taking the usual very long route through the arena - no idea why, I don't think I did anything different. Maybe its minor random position adjustment put it just over a boundary? I don't think I've ever seen it do that before.)

So! That's the three perfectable levels perfected! Now I have to get on to the vague, uncertain FN and DS. I think my goals have to be at least 400 on FN and 500 on DS, anyway. I also feel like I should probably pull another 569 and 299 just so I can't write those off as flukes. My 299 especially - I was at 245 as of this afternoon, it was a very rapid ascent!

Notes:

-- Still need verification from Ahlyis, JimiThingR and Grenade Guzzler. Rogue's FN 452 was verified via posted strategy while Mike, TomatoMan and I verified our scores with photos. I witnessed JimiThingR's FoH 569 and FT 299 so it is debatable whether this counts as verification or not. I gave him asterisks just to be fair, as I did for Ahlyis's IS 278 despite his high standing around here.

-- Tomato's FT 299 was posted just as I was about to post this leader board...got it in just in time. Glad I checked for new messages before I posted. Good work, TM! That extra 5 points eeked you out of your tie with SuperStein for 10th on the Combined Totals list.

-- If I left anyone out, let us know and we will correct it on the next list.

-- Remember to post all new scores in bold.

That's a pretty sexy scoreboard, but maybe I'm a little biased due to recent developments.

Rogue, just thought you might like (or hate) to know that I am almost positive 462 is possible in the Forest Navel. The problem is that, as I've said before, achieving that score will take either (a) a massive reworking of our strats or (b) completely new strats. I'm not willing to go back into that god-forsaken tract until I'm satisfied with my work on DS. But I figure my opinion might be useful to you if you are thinking of pushing the envelope there.

Ahlyis, I have very little knowledge of how the main game high scores works. The only score on that screen shot that I actually achieved is the 11 day, no deaths one. The 30 Parts, 27 Days one is a remnant of my memory card mishap with JimiThingR. I don't remember how many days it took me to beat it the first time. The 29 Parts, 30 Days one was just me hitting "Go To Sundown" a couple of times to see one of the alternate endings. I still haven't seen the complete failure ending. As for the 11 Days, no deaths one, I was working on the 9 Days, no deaths challenge until Mike came along and shattered my world with a FN 447. I decided to just finish it up so I wouldn't have to be ashamed of it when I posted my FN 452. Sooner or later I'll work on the 9 Days, no deaths challenge again, but I've always found Challenge Mode to be my main attraction to the game.

Stein, I figure you should try to get back onto the Top Ten Combined Totals before moving on to another game. By the way, how about I switch from the Norwegian Skoal! to the Irish Here's how!? Somehow I like the Norwegian version more, though. It's got a nice ring to it. One more thing, LotR TTT comes out tonight at midnight here in the States. Has it really already debuted in Norway? That surprises me. I'm going to see it on Thursday the 19th. Really, really psyched. I still can't understand how Peter Jackson could justify omitting Tom Bombadil from TFotR, though. Sacrilege. Blaugh.

I'd now like to officially add Ferret, Cocoapuffs and SnapDragon to the Missing Persons List:

Missing Persons List as of 12-17-02:
1. SnapDragon
2. Ferret5317
3. cocoapuffs999

Where the hell are those guys? They were monsters of the Pikmin world but they seem to have turned to the Dark Side, a.k.a. "Any Other Game But Pikmin." Please return to the fold and fight the good fight, dearest comrades.

TomatoMan, I'm not forgetting you in this rant. You were just lying low for a while, weren't you? Sneaky bastard (can I say bastard on GameFAQS?). You spent all that time with just one perfect score and then added two more in a span of less than a week! Heh, looks like you've had the breakthrough you'd been looking for. Remarkable progress, man. I hope FN and DS treat you well (though they're not known for wearing kid gloves). Good luck and godspeed!

Rob, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Forest Navel is the most deceptive level in the game. My first impression of it was that it is an oversized Impact Site...all pellet collecting and one Bread Bug. And Forest Navel doesn't even have the stupid Flint Beetle to throw a wrench into things! But the problem is pellet speed. The PAL version is the same as any other version. You're having the same trouble I did when I started working on that one in the spring. Nothing seems to work and whenever you make progress it's by tiny amounts, right? Believe me, just keep playing it and trying some different things. One of them will click. It's all about having guys ready for you at the onions when you return from a big sweep. The only way to really get anywhere is to keep trying. Keep at it.

Here's How!

Nathan, I added the Asterisk myself on the last high score update. I know I still need a photo for my IS score. I'll get it eventually. :-) Also, I'd say that any score witnessed and vouched for by another player of good standing should be sufficient. I'd say remove the asterisks from the scores that you witnessed.

Finally! I've passed the 400 mark! Now I need to work in some of them small pellets in my ending too! ;-)

I'm really getting good at flowering my Pikmin with the .. ugh.. what's their name? Flying nectar thingies. I can get 99 Pikmin on one patch of nectar, but I've never managed to flower the one wich I use to shoot down the flying nectar thingy. :-P

But this bridge thing.. Currently i'm working without them, but some day I'm going to clock the time of the big pellets with just sufficiant Pikmin on them, and all flowers! But now: w00t!

I did a few FN runs. Spoiled by my recent burst of success on FoH and FT, I was expecting a relatively easy boost up to 380 or so to knock Stein the heck back down and reclaim 10th place before I rolled up my sleeves and got into a detailed strategy on it.

Ha! Barely broke 300. I still get lost in those big dark areas down by the beach - often I have no idea which way I'm facing. Anybody make a map they're willing to scan?

I hate FN. Maybe I should do DS instead and save FN for last. Yuck. :P

OK, OK, a little boost, but enough to pop Stein back off the top 10 and me back on. Of course, he gets to see TTT first, so he still wins. :P
