Don't worry, Stein. You'll get your 452 and then move on to DS and your combined total will JUMP up. I've been working on both at once just to pass you! A cheap trick, I admit, but there it is. Your combined total doesn't move much when you're trying to eek out your last few points on a level!

My last big jump will come when I get at least 442 on FN - I doubt I'll be improving my 514 on DS much. With slightly better planning I probably could have gotten 525 or 530 with my strat, but that's about it.

Mike: we've been really obnoxious about the stars next to the scores, we even put them next to our own before we produce screenshots. You're right, though, your walkthrough is enough and your vid will be here shortly! :) Good enough for everyone here. Consider it gone.

Sorry Mike, I forgot you had posted a walkthrough. Wasn't even thinking about it. You're right, no asterisk should be next to your 482.

Well, I spent most of yesterday fighting flint beetles for practice... but I think it paid off...

IS - 273

Once you've gotten the pattern down, the only really tricky thing about Impact Site is the beetle. Now it's just a matter of getting that one really good beetle...

Well done, Dragorn. Satisfying, isn't it?

I've barely touched IS since my 278, but you're right: get the base pattern and then work in the beetle, and it's probably the easiest of the levels. Not that a 278 is easy, mind you... it takes patience (unless you're Stein and get it on the first go. I'm still sulking about that after all the hard work I did to get there. :)

w00t! IS - 278!

This was my second 8-hitter run. The first time I got 8 hits, I got so nervous that I lost a yellow while bombing the wall, and wound up with a 277. Grr...

Oh, I figured this was a good time for a proof screenshot, so I took a picture of my big 3 scores (in between these scores, I have big rows of "zeroes" in the FN and DS columns, lol). I should hopefully be able to have my friend scan it for me eventually. But I'm content with the asterisks for now.

So, I guess I may try Forest Navel when I see Mike's vid, but then again, I've really been neglecting the games I got for Christmas...

Decisions, decisions...

Congratulations Stein, Dragorn and everyone else on their new scores.

Rogue, why not try for the 482 yourself, the strat is not that much different than yours so you should not have much trouble making the changes.

I have calculated the max for distant spring, i have it as 724, which is 99 higher than the max for my strat. The 99 is one wollywog and five pellet, 2 Puffys, 2 fierys, 2 one pellets, 1 yellow 20 and 4 dwarfs. I could probably fit the puffy in the water into my strat, but i dont think i could fit anything else in.

How do you do the start? Do you take out 55 pikmin like rogue does? if yes then just make sure the breadbug drops two blues and take out 67 and just put 10 blues onto the pellet and do everything else as normal and put two extra pikmin on the wall.

Should I feed the breadbug to the blue onion as well?

Hey Mike, do I gather from your post that you skip the puffy near the starting area? I usually get him, but it does take time... maybe it isn't worth the 15 or 20 you get from him?

What I usually do near the beginning is take 67 or so (after collecting the yellow 10 and red 10 through the gate, and the blue 5 in the water) and kill the puffstool, bulborb and dwarf, throw 7 reds on the firey blowhog, kill the other borb and two dwarves, bring the red 10 to land with blues and then put reds on it, and then take the 50 or so remaining back towards the puffy and yellow 10; kill the puffy, swarm the inner bridge with all the yellows and reds, take the blues across and pop the pearl, leave 3 blues building the long bridge, and take the rest (the short bridge builds very quickly) and collect everything, leaving me with 94 to do the second phase. I usually switch to 84 blue / 10 red at that point, flower them, take 84 blues into the water and kill the frog by the bridge, and put 5 blues on it (the frog will kill them otherwise), and then head back to the rear area for the pearl, frogs and other puffstool.

If I do all this reasonably quickly I can get back from that trip with enough time to head back out and get the last pearl, a few frogs and their pellets, and (once) the remote blue 20. I don't bother with the puffy in the water.

This has netted me a max of 514, though, so there's lots of room for improvement. Maybe if I skip the first puffy I'd have more time for the water at the end?

Congrats to everyone on their scores, especially Mike, Stein, Tomato, Dragorn, XquietusX, and Master Bowser782. Keep it up, guys!

I've been lost in the real world, which is really quite refreshing. Well, it's not exactly the real world since I keep a very small circle of friends (more like a triangle of friends with each point representing one) and have a bit of a social phobia. But at least I'm doing things unrelated to video games for a change.

Mike, I figured you'd get me on Distant Spring...was pretty sure about it. Nice work. By the way, I calculated the max score for Distant Spring a while back as well, but I came up with 733. Is it possible you forgot to add the second flint beetle into your total? There is one flint beetle by each of the Puffstools and if you assume that you can get 14 out of each (two 5's and two 1's) then, to me, it all adds up to 733. But there are so many enemies and pellets in the level that it is easy to forget something. We should compare inventories sometime and try to come up with a definite max.

Regarding the DVD, I'm satisfied not being on it. Mike's scores should both be on it because they are higher. I'm not willing to pay the shipping costs of a video that isn't even top notch.

Tomato, for my 615 I ignored all three of the Puffy Blowhogs. They simply are not worth it. They are only worth 15, require you to color coordinate, and often take a long time to fight. Ignore them. If you have enough time at the end of your run and have nothing left nearby to retrieve, try to take down the PB over by the two-bridge pearl area. I think Mike will agree on that.

I think that's all I've got to say for now. I'll check back in later.

Well, well, well.

You go away for a few days' well deserved holiday and look what happens -- new contributors, PB's being smashed all over the place, and of course a couple of all-time highs going down. Well, congratulations to all, particularly Mike who deserves a special mention for taking out a perfecto and a top score. Incredible.

I've only had a little bit of time to play (having been in Singapore for a week), but I've turned to Impact Site now that I've finally gotten my target score on FN. I am proud to announce that I smashed my previous best of 214 on IS.

246 -- IS

I think I can make 256. In fact, I think I can get everything bar the flint beetle (of course) and the yellow 5 in the water. We'll just have to wait and see.

Until then, happy new year everyone.

Stein- Yes i take the breadbug to the blue onion as well. Which pellets do you collect with your 69?

TM- I kill the puffy near the yellow 10 as i have 91 or 93 pikmin with me at this stage, and it is usually a quick battle. I leave the one in the area with the yellow 20 and 4 dwarfs and the one in the water. Do you kill mamuta?

I usually start my getting all the nearby dwarfs and one pellets, The Yellow 10, yellow 5, red 5, puffstool, Bulbear near puffstool, Bulbear near the yellow onion for a total of 117. Then i kill mamuta and the three dwarfs, the wollywog in the small pond, Flower pikmin on grass there, Kill puffstool and collect carcass and red 10 nearby, kill the dwarf and collect, kill the wollywog near the water and collect, go round and kill the bulbear and collect the pellet posies. Kill the two wollywogs on the way to pearl, collect pearl and wollywogs, collect the bulbear, collect the wollywog carcass near the three dwarfs, collect the three dwarfs and run to base (save mamuta and red 10 till end). Take about 7 or 9 blues and put on the long bridge to the pearl, then go back and help everything back and swap 5 pellets to right colour. Take rest of pikmin and kill the dwarf and bulbear, kill puffy, then throw 8 reds on to fiery, throw about 8 yellows on bridge, then kill dwarf then throw 10 blues on the 10 blue pellet, kill the other dwarf and collect, then go towards red 10 and kill the wollywog, collect these, then kill and collect nearby dwarf. Go back and collect dwarf near blue 10, collect puffys pellets, collect pellet posies, collect yellow 10, go pearl and put three pikmin on to it, then go back to onions and collect the dwarf and bulbear on the way. Put most of your yellows and reds away so you have about 75 blues, kill wollywog closest to red onion, kill wollywog near blue 5 pellet, flower pikmin in nearby grass, kill wollywog near bridge then put about 10-12 on the bridge, fling a blue at blue 1 pellet, break and collect pearl with 5 pikmin. Put 10 blues on the blue 10 pellet then head towards the blue 20 and kill nearby wollywog and collect, collect blue 20 so you have about 9-14 pikmin left, collect all three dwarfs and maybe 5 pellet near red onion if you have enough pikmin, call reds and yellows and collect mamuta and red 10, go back and call all blues, collect wollywog near bridge and pikmin who were working on the bridge, put 10 on the red 10 and collect the wollywog nearby, collect more blues and collect the wollywog near the blue 5 pellet and the blue 5 pellet. Change all pellets if time allows too right colour.

Nath- I forgot about both flint beetles, so i have the max at 752.

Thanx and congrats rob and congratulations everyone on new scores.

Ahlyis, what are the exact conditions for the 11 day 50 pikmin challenge.

You may not, at any time, have more than 50 total Pikmin. You may not allow a Pikmin to die. You are allowed to use the candypop buds, but be careful. If you convert all blues into reds for instance, you will end up getting a blue seed on the next day, putting you at 51 Pikmin. The one exception being FT, single color Pikmin Extinction on FT does not result in a new seed the next day since you leave the planet and never have a 'next day'.

It took 1 Day for FT, 2 for IS and FoH and 3 each for DS and FN when I did it. One other person completed the challenge (I forget who) and they wondered if it might be possible to do FN in 2 days. I'm doubtful, but it may be possible.

When I did it, I think this is how it went...
Day 1: standard IS with 25 red flowers.
Day 2: FoH - get four parts, the yellow onion and 9 yellows. You can't get the part on the beach since you don't have 40 Pikmin yet, so get the part on the ledge where the Bulbear and 4 dwarf's are in Challenge Mode instead.
Day 3: FN - Get the blue onion, 15 blues, 1 yellow (use a blue pellet and have the yellows take it back with the Breadbug latched on). You need to get 3 parts each day here, but try to get 4 this first Day. And don't bother killing fiery blowhogs, they'll be back by the time you return.

From here, I forget the exact pattern, but you need to work it such that when you return to FN, you have at least 40 blues. I think I had 48 blues, 1 red and 1 yellow. Get the parts in the water, then convert your blues to reds and yellows via the candypop buds. There is no blue candypop bud in FN, so you need to bring the blues with you. Days 9 and 10 I spent back at FN.
Day 11: FT - I had only 1 blue and I changed him to a yellow. I went with 20 yellows and 30 reds (after converting my lone blue). Just toss the blue into a yellow bud and leave him. The bud will close on it's own eventually and spit out a seed. Take the other 19 yellows to the high cliff. Toss 3 to the side, then run the rest into the water towards the island with the bridge. Run to the island and call them. Put them to work on the bridge. Go back to the other three yellows. One by one, have them get bombs, then long toss them to the bridge island. They'll bomb the wall, then try to run back to you, so you have to run to the island after tossing them or they will drown. The rest of FT is pretty standard.

Has anyone else noticed a picture in the instruction manual which shows a one pellet with 3 pikmin on it? Its on page 15 in my manual.

Stein, I put a search on the internet for challenge mode scores to see if there were any more sites with them on, but i came across a message board on the norweigen nintendo site with you on it. Couldnt understand a word you were saying but your name and sig was the same.

That is the Norwegian Nintendo Forum.. but there's no competition there!! Just 2 or 3 guys which play the game! New High:

DS - 539
Combined Total - 2137

This was a nice run, only 1 pellet to the wrong onion and three deaths (two phantom). I think I can push my strat to 550, but that would be a perfect, no deaths run. The mid 540's is more realistic.

Nice work on all the new scores, good to see rob back. Superstein, excellent work on 452 for FN.

Mike, I've thought about getting back to FN, but I definitely want improve DS some more first. The part of your strat I like the most is getting the red 10 on the beach early so that those ten reds can build the yellow 20 bridge, then putting the 26 blues on the yellow 20. Good stuff.

Mike: the tape just arrived! Cool!

Maddening that it's sitting right here and I can't play it. I'm going to hit the phone book and find a conversion service, the local university might have one.

How do you kill the marmuta-whatever? :P Do you rain on him? Every time I do it, he smashes so many pikmin into the ground that I've felt it isn't worth the time, but maybe I just need to get better at it.

TM

Posted by Mikepharvey - 1/6/2003 1:32:28 PM

tm, my method of killing mamuta involves a little bit of luck (used to be a lot until i found a way to reduce the risk). I take 100 pikmin to it and swarm him, then make olimar stand off to the side, he will either:

Do nothing and die
Attack you, but this wont crush your pikmin, (well maybe one or two)
Sweep across with his hand and knock your pikmin off, if this happens quickly cstick them back on and hopefully kill him before he crushes them.

With practice then you can kill him and it will only take a few seconds, i use leaf pikmin as well, so maybe you could use fewer flowers.

Rogue, for my 472 run, i used the yellows to build the bridge so i had to leave the yellow 10 in the lake. I was racking my head thinking how else i could do it and bring the yellow 10 in, when i walked past the red 10 and saw how close it was to the yellow 5, and realised it could be gotten earlier with the yellow 5, although it refuses to go through the gap where the wall was, and goes the long way, so i had to make sure a lot of pikmin were on it.
As for the 26 blues on the yellow 20, i always did the puffstool area in reverse area as i wanted the red 20 to be back rather than the red 10, so i was always taking the 26 blues in and out again, so i knew i could use these on the yellow 20, it was just getting the bridge done that was the problem.
Congrats on your score.

Stein, Norway has some good footy players, a few play for my fave team liverpool who were sadly knocked out of the champions league early this year.

Now i must go and do some revision.

I tried FN again with two blue 5s from the breadbug. Pellets I collect with my 69:

- Two pellet possys
- Blue 5 and yellow 5
- blue 1 and yellow 1 (and I leave one blue for later, thx Rogue)
- yellow 10 in the water with blues
- blue 10 in the water
- red 1
- red 10 which require that pile of sitcks (I use 12 Pikmin here)
- leave about 5-6 Pikmin on the wall
- The red 5 by the wall (behind blue onion)

Sadly.. I was incredibly slow... :P I also failed to stop the yellow 10 going into the blue onion afterwards! LOL!

Any more tips for me mike?

Get the blue 10 first, then drop down and collect the yellow 10, so you have a better chance of interceping the yellow 10. And use the honeywisp near the blue 5 and yellow 5 to flower your pikmin (thanx ahlyis). After these pellets do you put pikmin on the bridge, collect the red 1 and yellow 5?

OK Mike, here's the latest:

There's ONE GUY in town who can do these conversions, and he charges $25/hour with a 1-hour minumum.

What I'm thinking is this: if we're going to use your 620 as well, it might be good if you'd go ahead and send it as well, so I can do them both at once. The guy said he'd charge me $5 more to switch tapes, but I could at least do them both for $30 combined rather than $50.

Nathan, if you come up with a 630 after we go through all this, I'll be REALLY PISSED! :)

Since it's so expensive to do all this, let's (a) make sure Mike's run is going to be it, or (b) someone on this side of the pond (NATHAN) beat Mike!

What do you think, Mike? I know shipping the tapes isn't cheap for you either.

Been trying to get my score up on the final trial but the enemies keep killing my pikmin, any1 got any good strats to beat beady long legs(it always takes me to long and lots of deaths), and that bird thing(i figure this has the luck factor though as getting him to pop out partially twice)

for now i'm gonna go back to distant spring and try and get my score up again, now that i just read a strat from mike on how to beat mamuta, i think i could add that into my run, so far my score is 486

After not playing Pikmin in months I decided to try a run while I was home sick today. After a few hours I fell in love with the game again.

Forest Navel 430
Sadly this run was very sloppy. I missed 3 one pellets and a 5 which I usually get. I also misfiled a 1 pellet.

Posted by TomatoMan - 1/7/2003 3:39:46 PM

Xquietus: I find Ahlyis's reccomendation of 13 yellows to fight Beady the best solution so far. More than that and it's hard to keep track of them all. (It's hard enough as it is.) And the bird, yes, it's luck. Until he comes up slow you're hiding. It's random as far as anybody can tell. When he does come up, make sure you're swarming right above him and you'll take him out in one go.

Cocoapuffs! Welcome back!

yeah, i love distant spring, it's my best level and i've moved my score way up, although i was out of time on my high scoring run, so i misplaced two yellow 5's and a red ten coming in from the water with blues on them, i would have changed them but they all came back with less than a second to spare as it was, and i even had like 5-10 deaths in the run

so my new scores are

Impact Site - 262

Ahlyis, about the 11 day 50 pikmin challenge, i managed to do days 1 and 2, and on day 3 i managed to get 5 parts, the automatic gear, space float, ionium jet(i think that is its name, its the one in the water needing 15 blues), the one that looks like a spring and the one the bll drops. I dont know if its possible to get the last 4 parts in 1 day but i will try when i go back there. Whats annoying me is i had enough time at the end to get some bombs with the yellows and take down the black wall to the analogue computer and libra.

No actually.. next on my list is this:
- Collect about 34/35 Pikmin from the onions.
- Take the yellow 5 on the little top
- blue 5 between the bridges
- 2 pellet possies
- blue 5 a ledge further down
- red 1 on the way to the wall
- yellow 5 near the wall

Mike: I did the 50 Pikmin Challenge awhile ago, and I also thought that Forest Navel might be possible in two days instead of three. I meant to go back and try it, but it slipped my mind.

Anyway, Ahlyis put the idea back in my head when he mentioned the Forest Navel 2-day thing earlier; so I decided to give it a try. I've found that if, on the first day, you:

-Recover 4 parts (Auto gear, space float, grav jumper, ionium jet)
-Destroy the gray wall by the onions (which seems to be a faster substitute for building the two ramps)
-Kill BLL and Puffstool (w/o bringing back their parts)
-Destroy the black lattice wall leading to the analog comp and the Libra, and build the entire Libra Bridge

then there is JUST enough time to bring in the last 5 parts on the second day. On my best run for the first day, I did everything above except for completing the Libra bridge, which I missed completing by a few sections. So I took another day to finish the bridge and then went on to try the second day, which I completed successfully. And I'm almost positive that I can trim down my first day strat to get those last sections in.

Oh, and, uh, on the topic of challenge mode scores, I've got four 299's and a 298 on my Final Trial Scoreboard...

New high:

DS - 545
Combined Total - 2143

Nice run, three deaths, only 1 5 pellet that was misfiled. The max for my current strat is 550, so it looks like I have to change it up to go any further.

man, my scores really been moving up since i dont wait to take reds over to the pearl near the blowhogs now, although i can't see expanding my strategy anymore, except for maybe 1 frog which was about 5 seconds away and a 5 i had to leave behind cause i didn't have any pikmin left, but i think i'm in the top ten for a stage now, yippi

The Distant Spring - 530

i guess i should try working on the other stages again but i can't seem to get any of those scores up at all, oh well back to my pikmining, later
