Bye, I'm sure you'll be missed. *laughs*

Anyway...

299 - FT

Would've had it sooner, but the damn wollywog ruined at least half my runs.

On my 299 run, everything up to the BLL fight was good, but it was all downhill from there. I wasted tons of time on the back pellets (as usual). Also, I wasted a lot of time near the end, when my 20 blues weren't enough to carry the blue 20 down from it's ledge (so I had to pluck the nearby reds and have them help, and then call everyone off and reapply the blues once it was down). I almost had another incident with a red falling in the water...

And then as the countdown timer was starting, I saw 4 pikmin sitting on the 5 pellet dropped by the wollywog, so I had to make a mad dash and throw the right color on... it miraculously made it back to the correct onion right before the end.

So, yay, on to Impact Site...

Forest Navel -482-on tape

Finally done it. I actually did it at about 4pm uk time yesterday but i didnt get a chance to post it. I will post a walkthrough but it is my brothers birthday today and ive got to go meet him in half an hour to go to the pub. so i will either do it tonight or first thing tomorrow. Shall i post it in this topic or the faqs topic? I will copy the run on to a blank tape today or tomorrow so i will email you when i have done that tm.

Anyway about the run, it came straight after a 477 a blue 5 just never got back. (well not straight after, i had to keep restarting until i got two blues). In my 482 run, the start was pretty slow and i made a major mistake in the middle. i was taking the 10 blues to put on the yellow 10 in the big lake, when one tripped over without me realising. I dismissed the pikmin on to the pellet but the one that fell over never got on. i carried on then realised my mistake, quickly threw the last pikmin on the pellet. But it cost me the time it takes for that pellet to get to land before i could replace the pikmin with yellows. Thinking i must have failed, i carried on for the practice, but i managed to do the rest in record time and managed to get everything in with 2 on the counter.

Congrats stein. Unlucky about the misfiling, you will do it eventually.

Congrats dragorn. Another perfect done another contender for the crown. well done. What are you going to do now? I recomend impact site if you havent already done it.

pity about the cube ahlyis. Keep searching for that reciept.

Congratulations, Mike. I don't think any of us ever dreamed that Forest Navel was perfectable. Just unbelievable. Can't WAIT to see the tape, and I'll rip it to QuickTime like the others so that everyone can see it.

Nathan, any time you want to send a tape of your DS run, feel free - the DVD will contain your best effort, whenever you think you've gotten it. If you're still working on it, by all means continue!

Stein, you're safe for a couple of days, but after New Year's I'm returning to the fray, freshly energized and determined to scrape up a few points somewhere and pass you again! :)

Well, I'm going to take my cube in and get it fixed. To keep my fiance from killing me, I'm selling an item on Ebay that will more than cover the repairs. If anyone's curious, here's the link:

Excellent job Mike!!! I'd recommend posting the walkthrough to the FAQ topic so it will get added to the FAQ.

Well, that was a miserable experience. Prepare for a long rant...

I called the Nintendo 800 number the other day and the only place anywhere close that does repairs is in Cupertino. Not too bad since I work in Cupertino, but the next closest place is in Stockton or Modesto, both over 100 miles away.

So I took my cube to work with me today and planned on taking it in at lunch. Now I'm out at lunch looking for the place and I can't find it. I wrote the address down, but accidentally left it at home. So I call the 800 number again to get the address again... It's no longer listed as an authorized service center!!!

So I press 0 and talk with a live person. He checks and sure enough, the place in Cupertino took themselves off the list! And he can't get the address since it's not on the list any more!! AND my cube is not registered (which is supposed to be automatic when you buy it) so I don't officially have any warranty!!! I mentioned before that I can't find the receipt, right?

But the guy on the phone is nice and enters my cube into the database good until January 26th. So I call home to my fiance, who is home sick today, and get her to find the address for me. So far, everything is sweet, but now we get to the repair shop from hell.

I get there and ask if the guy can help. He says he's backlogged. Ok, no problem, can I leave it and get it repaired eventually? So he calls some number and gives them the SN from my cube and guess what... It's not registered, so he can't even take it in for eventual repair. Obviously there is some database delay going on here. So I am forced to leave since the guy is EXTREMELY non-customer oriented!!! It's a damn good thing he owns his own junky little repair shop because if he had a boss, he'd get fired for his customer handling.

Anyway, I leave and as I'm headed back to work, I call Nintendo again and ask them how long it should take to percolate through their systems. The guy tells me that he shows it in the database, but that he doesn't know how long or even IF it will percolate through to the database that the repair shop guy is getting access to. Great! :-( The Nintendo guy tells me to go back to the shop and have the repair guy call them directly if there is a problem. So I do that.

I go back to the shop, already knowing this is going to be ugly because of the repair shop guy. I go in already apologizing. I try to explain the situation to him, but he doesn't care. If it's not in the database, he can't do anything. He won't even call Nintendo and talk to someone. If it's not in the database, too bad! At this point, I'm seriously considering driving the 100+ mile just to deal with someone a little more friendly. But I push on and he finally writes up the repair ticket and says he'll hold the cube until the registration is in the database. Until then, he can't do anything. Great... So here's how the conversation went then...
So, I should call you back Monday to see if it's registered?
NO!
Huh?
Don't call me back, just wait.
Um, so I should wait what, a year. How will I ever know if it ever got registered.
I'll call you if there's a problem.
Ok fine, thank you.

I left then, got into my car and drove away. I already fear what is going to happen when (and if) he sends it off to Nintendo for repair. On the ticket, he wrote that it fails to read the disk. Well, that's only true after it warms up. When you first turn it on, it reads the disk just fine.

So, it's going to get to Nintendo saying that it can't read the disk. They're going to pop in a disk and turn it on... lo and behold, it reads the disk. So they shut it down and send it back. Then he's going to call me and tell me it's fixed.

I can already see it coming. I know it's coming. And it's only going to happen after he gets off his fat *** and actually sends it in.

So I'm going to have no cube for 2 weeks to a month. And when I get it back, it's probably 50-50 whether it'll even be fixed then!

I would just like to state again, for the record, that I hate frogs.

Had a good DS run going last night until 2/3 of the way through, when I'm taking on the first froggie in the pool back by the second puffstool. Olimar ventured one pixel too close to him, enough to be knocked senseless on his fanny so I couldn't whistle back the boys when the froggie jumped. A dense cloud of blue ghosts, 35 in one whack. (My record is 60.) Power off. >:-(

I was fooling around with challenge mode today and I thought up of a new challenge. Can you beat these scores while always keeping your Pikmin in leaf form?

IS - 260
FoH - 480
FN - 320
DS - 440
FT - 170*

*FT is a special case. You may only pick the Pikmin on the field when they are in leaf form.

I know practically nobody's going to even try it, but I'll post it here in case there are exceptions.

That's an interesting one, GrenadeGuzzler. Impact Site would be rough on this if you're going for the Flint Beetle, since you could only hit it once before you start getting nectar - so you'd either have to avoid the nectar drops, which I'd say is close to impossible, or you'd be looking at a theoretical max of 266 if you just get him once.

Posted by Mikepharvey - 12/29/2002 4:37:53 PM

I know where you are coming from about the frogs tm. I had 15 mysterious deaths on the one you are talking about. I battle it about 1/4 of the way through my run though so if it does kill them i dont waste a really good run.

Interesting word usage there, us english have a different ruder meaning for the word you used to say what olimar landed on.

FT 250

I got 204 yesterday with help from Grenade Guzzler strat for the level all i need to do now is beat BLL for the four tens and not lose any pikmin. How many yellow pikmin should i use to fight BLL?

Posted by TomatoMan - 12/30/2002 9:09:45 AM

Ahlyis recommends 13 in his strat, and when I got my 299 I did use 13. I tried with 20 once and it was just too much to keep track of.

Pay attention to your position and aiming - it was a while before I realized how important it is. My initial tendency was to panic under there and just fling fling fling. Stay calm and keep your purple target centered underneath him. His steps can be very misleading, so focus on his body. Whistle your yellows whenever he shakes ANY off, even if some are still up there, and throw them all back up again. Rinse, lather, repeat, and hope for good drops. :)

While my cube is in the shop, I have gone to Blockbuster and rented a cube. I simply had to after Mike posted his FN 482 strat.

Speaking of which... ARE YOU FREAKING INSANE MIKE???

I tried that stupid walkthrough, I get the Hurry Up warning BEFORE I reach the point Mike says I should hear the third bell!!! I know I could do it faster, but that much?!?! Simply insane Mike! :-)

DS - 518
Combined Total - 2076

Main Game - Surviving Pikmin - 7300+

Ok, so the last one doesn't belong, I just wanted to mention it anyway :-)

I have also started working on perfecting my FoH scoreboard. So far I have 3 perfects, a 568 and a 567 on there. Soon I hope to have all 5 at 569. :-)

I keep trying to get all 578's on IS, but so far with no luck. The one run I had recently where I got the flint beetle enough, I had a stupid mistake with some blues getting left behind so I didn't have enough later and couldn't finish in time. The board does have all 273 or higher though, so maybe I'll just settle for that. For now anyway ;-)

On a side note...

Someone mentioned Olimar's Journal entries before. Specifically, the entries you get when you just go to IS repeatedly. One of those entries that most players probably never see talks about stupid Pikmin!

Olimar is musing about how intelligent and coordinated most of the Pikmin seem. Then he says something about there probably being "dim" and "clumsy" Pikmin as well. And that those Pikmin are likely to screw up even the simplest of orders.

So that explains why the stupid Pikmin I threw at a pellet decided to run off somewhere else instead! I really hate when they decide to go help a further out pellet which already has a Pikmin on it instead of grabbing the pellet right at their feet!

JUST short of a perfect 299 because four 1 pellets were on their way when the day ended. I used my own strat and if I could just work a teensy bit faster, I can get perfect. I think I wasted some time fighting the Snagret because he came up fast too many times.

Posted by Grenade Guzzler - 12/30/2002 5:01:29 PM

Yes I had to come back for them since 4/7 of the 1 pellets were blue and all my blue pikmin were used up with the four blue pellets BLL dropped and the blue 20. When I was able to come back I put 2 on each 1 pellet but I had so little time left that they couldn't make it. The day ended with the first pellet just coming off the wooden bridge to the landing site.

So, if BLL drops a variety of colors, you won't need to come back for Snagret pellets later? That should be easy enough and should save you tons of time, right? So get cracking... Where's that 299 dangit!
---
I'm just a pigment of your imagination.

Posted by Grenade Guzzler - 12/30/2002 5:32:04 PM

Yes. The best combination I can get is 2 blues 1 red and 1 yellow. 1 blue is also fine but if the other 3 are the same color I have to restart. Here are the combinations that are suitible for me:

blue blue red yellow
blue blue red red
blue blue yellow yellow
blue red red yellow
blue red yellow yellow

If I get 3 blues I need to rely on some lucky non-blue drops from the Snagret. 4 blues is a definate "don't go there" and I will restart. I'll try to get that 299 very soon.

Okay, I just had four goes with FT. No 299 and I had to restart every time.

Try 1: Two red Pikmin somehow fell off the bridge when I was crossing it. I couldn't save them.

Try 2: BLL squished two yellows.

Try 3: Snagret kept coming up fast. When he did come up slow I had wasted way to much time.

Try 4: The frog squished two blues when they tripped under his shadow.

I gotta keep going at it.

the Snagret always come up fast but if you go there before BLL he usually comes up fast once and then slow

It's random. I always go there after BLL and the Snagret often comes up slow pretty quickly.

Another go at FT. I managed a 297 this time. I did everything exactly perfectly, except for a red 5 pellet the Snagret dropped. I has 2 reds 2 yellows and 1 blue on it. It went into the yellow Onion despite the fact that the reds were on first.

That Snagret... always coming in between me and my 299!

what, did you expect to have a few goes and get a 482. It took me over a month to get fast enough to get a 442, never mind the 482. Keep plugging away, you can knock half a notch of your time at the beginning if you do that perfectly. You will gradually increase your speed as you go along. After forest navel, you will go back to impact site and wander how come you didnt get a 273 first go.

Plugging away at distant spring myself

distant spring-615-not on tape

2 deaths, but all 4 frogs at the end dropped yellows and i had to misfile them all

distant spring-617-not on tape

4 deaths, 1 blue dropped, rest all yellows and reds, but managed not to misfile 1 of them.

distant spring-620-on tape
combined score-2248

Yes i taped this one, 3 deaths, one blue dropped and three reds or yellows, only misfiled one and that was because it got to the onion a millisecond before i did.

I still would rather we used naths 613 on the dvd so he better send it in soon.

Well, I think my game is showing signs of overusage. I cannot play FN challenge mode anymore.

When I try to play FN challenge, I must always play in slow motion. The screen and sprites move super slow but the sounds and music seem normal. There is no slowdown when I do a close-up view, but there is this strange black line that appears out of nowhere when I do a close-up. It blocks about half of the right side of the screen.

Even if there were no black like, I don't want to play the FN challenge mode always in closeups and I certainly don't want to play it while it's going half its normal speed.

Posted by Ahlyis - 1/2/2003 11:17:25 AM

No new high, but I put on another 569 on FoH. Just one to go now.

On that note... I ****ING HATE PIKMIN!!! Well, ok, it's a love hate relationship, but lately there's been more hate than love. I spent much of yesterday simply playing round after round of FoH trying for that last 569. I had Pikmin die at the craziest of times, places where I NEVER lose Pikmin, I would lose a Pikmin and have to start over.

Then finally, just to pour salt in the wounds I'm sure, I had a near perfect run going. I was a little slow, but not too slow. Would have finished with 3 on the clock instead of 5 or 6 like usual. But then disaster struck for no explainable reason. The last two pellets I grab are the red 20 behind the fire jets, then the yellow 20 across the two bridges. I took 22 reds to the red 20, pushed most of them on it, then dismissed the rest into it. Instead of grabbing the 20, they ran straight to the wall and stayed there. I was watching as I started to run away to go get the yellow 20, so I saw it happen. I immediately stopped and went and grabbed the little bastards and put them on the red 20. I then booked it to the onions, grabbed the yellows and blues there and went to get the yellow 20. The day ended with the yellow 20 at the edge of the yellow onion. With 4 more seconds, it would have been in. Those little bastards found yet another way to ruin a perfect run.

The only thing I can figure is that one of the Pikmin must have tripped, then got caught way back by the bridge to the pearl area, so when I dismissed the Pikmin into the red 20, they tried to go to the 'middle' between them all. The one stuck by the bridge caused all the others to run to the wall like little morons. But that only works if I only had 21 on the red instead of the 22 I thought were with me. I'm pretty sure that the red got picked up by 22 Pikmin, not 21. So why the hell did they run into the wall then?

I HATE THIS STUPID GAME! GAAAHHHHH!!!!!

But I'm sure I'll be back playing it again tonight. lol

Wow, it's been a long time since anyone did an update. Several scores fell off, but I'm too lazy to list the people who fell off. Especially considering most of them haven't posted here in ages anyway.

We now have 4 perfected levels W/O a gameshark! Ok Mike, we're waiting for you to amaze us all and do a perfect run on DS! lol :-)

Lots of asterisks on there, but mostly from trusted people. So I guess we just leave those scores with asterisks indefinitely? I for one intend to provide a photo eventually. I'm just waiting to finish my FoH scores :-) But for the rest of you with asterisks, please consider providing a photo. Eventually we will have to remove them.

NOOO! Yet another update with TomatoMan ahead of me! Argh! And I've been constantly concentrating on FN.. surely I could break my DS record.. but I need to be at 452 before I move on. I've given up to take the 482 without seeing the video... Mike is to bloody fast!
However, it's good finally someone updated it.. thx Ahlyis!!
But next time, wait until I'm leading!

Well, stinks to be back at work, but at least I can follow the board regularly again.

Mike, you've done the impossible. I was as sure that 482 was impossible as I am that DS will never be cleared. Congrats on the phenomenal run, I am green with envy...

Ahlyis, congrats on the upcoming nuptials. I will be getting hitched about three weeks after you. Also, did I read that right? Do you have four 569's on FH? That's pretty sweet.

Nathan, I hate DS. I just can't make clean runs

Distant Spring - 514
Combined total - 2060

Almost a 40-point improvement! FINALLY got a reasonable run on DS, managed to get all 3 pearls plus the remote blue 20 in the water for the first time. Not too many MDs, and I think 3 blue 5s from the frogs (out of 6?).

My current strat may be close to maxxed - can't imagine for the life of me how Nathan and Mike are pulling in 100 more. Still can't break my 400 on FN either. Waiting for the epiphany to hit.

w00t!

I just got this game two days ago, Beat it, and so far my high score in Forest of Hope challenge mode is 279. You veterans may now begin to mock me.

MARVEL VS. CAPCOM 2 RULES ALL, every other game is just a distraction. For my own safety, there MUST be a sequel.

Put up a couple of 297s on FT tonight, just for practice... very strange MD on one. I was fighting the frog, using my new fraidy-cat technique of pulling them off a lot and doing several quick feint/rushes rather than one big swarm... seems to work SLIGHTLY better for me. Anyway, I had pulled all 55 off before when I thought he was going to jump, and he was all by himself and Olimar was between him and the pikmin, they were all just swirling around behind and waiting for the froggy to jump, a good distance away. The frog jumps, nowhere NEAR any pikmin, and my counter drops to 99 while he's in the air.

A lot has to go right for a 299; glad I got it when I did, I haven't repeated it yet. Fighting Beady without losses is still a challenge for me, and the friggin' bird always seens to nab ONE somehow.

I'm totally stumped on FN at this point. I may have to read one of the 442 or 452 strats and see whether I can get any ideas. I just feel like I'm crisscrossing myself all over the place and don't have a good sense of the distances. I'm still not building the two short bridges near the landing area.

Still, if I could get up to 440 I'd hit 2100 overall, which feels like a good goal for me. 2200 is the realm of the Immortals - Nathan and Mike and maybe Rogue if he goes on a tear. :)

TomatoMan: You can't do this to me! Now I'll need to improve my combined total score with 42 just to catch up on you! And why the hell aren't you playing Metroid, huh? You need to work out your prioroties (spelling?) man! You should go easy on the ones that are younger than you! ;)

And: ARGH! Was just 4 secs away from 452! The yellow 10 and red 20 from BLL's lair was just about to make it in! Right beside their respective onion. I need to go even faster on this level. The start is soooo irritating, you need to have it all perfect. All those 1 pellets and 5 pellets are giving me a hard time! I'm going to get the 452. I refuse to move on to Distant Spring before I hit it...!.!.!
