These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

greatmagnus you're really starting to annoy me
with your incessant yet entirely useless bumping. Exactly what is
the point in bumping a topic only 10 minutes after your last
post?!
Can I suggest that find some other board on which to
increase your postcount/karma? There are plenty of boards that have
no topics or active users where you would be free to post as many
bumps as you like, without running the risk of being marked for
moderation. And, trust me, I will dedicate myself to marking you for
moderation if you persist in posting completely pointless one or two
word messages on every single topic.

well nath, you may want to postpone your forest
navel attempt for now.
distant spring-587
i
nearly quit halfway through this run because i had 4 mysterious
deaths on one frog. but i carried on and had to leave a dwarf
carcass i usually get. everything was good until right at the end, i
threw 3 pikmin at the dwarf in a rush and managed to throw one to
far with out realising, and it never got back in time when i
rectified my mistake. i also didnt get a wollywog back in time.
i
know i will break 600 soon, so expect me to post soon. also, i am
home for xmas in 2 weeks so i will start videotaping runs from then
on.
congrats to everyone on their scores.

Wierd mysterious death on FoH last night. Anyone
have this happen? It was not monster-related. I was gathering up the
yellow 20. What I usually do is get at least 11 yellows on it, then
get up to 20 with with whatever I've got, so that it gets picked up
with 20 and more yellows than anything else, and THEN rush it with
the crowd once it's started moving to put 50 on it. It seems to me
that an object's destination is decided at the moment it's lifted by
the pikmin, and nothing you do from that point on will change it,
but if you pick it up with a big crowd, it might get lifted by 30 or
40, in which case your 11 yellows might not be the majority and it
may wind up headed for the wrong onion.
Anyway, so I picked
up the yellow 20, got it moving, then immediately rushed it with my
crowd to get 50 on it. I got up to about 47 or so, the rest were
trying to find a handhold, and then I head the little "hmmm" sound
and my pikmin count dropped to 99! There was nothing else going on
on the level.
I think "mysterious deaths" happen when a
pikmin is affected by something spatial and it has no place to be.
If the game can't place the pikmin, it just erases him. When a
monster dies and falls into a space occupied by a pikmin, if the
pikmin can't move to an adjacent space for some reason, he goes
poof. This was the first time I ever lost a pikmin picking
something up. Wierd! Anybody else ever see this?
And mike and
Nathan, you guys are TAPING your DS runs, right?

have the same Combined Score too :-P Crazy! Are you clones or
something.. your are just too good...! Don't think I'll ever play

*Obviously just a lame excuse for everytime he
has said that he will restart his Pikmining, but never gets around
to actually do it. He has been caught in SSB:M Target Test's Claws.
Currently standing on a total 5:36,35. For those who aren't
interested, ignore it. Oh god, I've just infected the Pikmin board

Nice work MikeP, get crackin' on
600.
Nathan, are you sure the two bridges aren't necessary? I
think it depends on your strat. I collect all of the big pellets by
the pearl in one sweep and only the red 20 doesn't use the bridges.
I'll have to test it, but it seemed like they got back faster. Also,
I save the blue 20 in the big lake for the end and it seems like the
only way it will get in on time is the bridge route. Again,
untested, but if they are unecessary that could save me some time.
I'm anxious to try this out (lousy working 'till
5...).
Ahlyis, I like the honeywisp idea. There are few
things more frustrating than having a great start to a run spoiled
by grass that doesn't give nectar. I'll give that a try
too.

Mike, you are good. I congratulate you. Notice
I'm not using exclamation points, however. That's because I'm not
particularly enthused. Impressed as hell, but it's quite the
bittersweet impression. Rest assured, I'll be hitting the old DS
tonight with tape running and with a craving for blood. I'm going
for the jugular. Move over, Betty, Nathan's stepping up to the stove
with a spicy new recipe! I shall wring the life juices out of the
Pik Pik carrots and lap up their sweetness! There's your friggin'
exclamation point!
Rouge, you'd have to prove me wrong on
that bridge thing. You could be right, however. I've never actually
sat there with a stopwatch to compare times. What I do know is that
even if the bridges improve the speed of some pellets, they only
improve the speed by the tiniest bit. I guess my real argument is
that (a) the bridges never helped me improve on the level and (b)
the effort of building them (even if you do so with just one or two
Pikmin) is not cost effective. That's just my take on it, though.
I really want to be playing Forest Navel. I know that I can
break 600 on DS without straining myself too much...the real
challenge is getting 462 on FN. But I guess Mike would rather keep
our insane battle going until we set a truly ungodly score. It's
still rather amazing that we reached Ferret's mark - both with
original strats.
Tomato, I've never had mysterious deaths on
a pellet. That is very strange, you're right. But I have had many
mysterious deaths while fighting an enemy. You can lose
Pikmin before the enemy even dies. This is another solid refutation
of the previously held notion that M.D.'s are caused by falling
corpses crushing Pikmin.
Okay, this has nothing to do with
anything but I have to ask it. Why is spent the past tense of
spend but the past tense of expend is expended?
English is stupid. I love it, but it's stupid.

English is stupid, and
beautiful. Here's a good one: what verb is "wrought" the past tense
of? As in, put this in the present: "My sword was wrought of
hammered iron." Hint: it's not "made". No peeking in the dictionary,

Wrought is the past tense of work.
And no, I didn't peek in the dictionary...three years of working at
an English major was enough to pick up plenty of these ornamental
tidbits. And remember people, you can speak well but you can't speak
good...regardless (not irregardless) of what anyone says. English
is a beautiful language and its vastness of vocabulary and
idiosyncratic details are part of what makes it so beautiful. But
it's still stupid. So there!

I have regained my crown, though I fear the
throne is a transient place with Mike around:
Distant
Spring - 589 (on tape)
This was the first run with the
tiny tweak I've done to my strategy. I used a different nectar patch
early in the run so that the one closest to the blue onion is
available at the end when I pull down all my blues. This made things
much easier, but the difference in speed caused a misfiling of a red
five-pellet that I usually catch up with before the blues take it
home. My only other misfiling was a yellow one-pellet and I had only
two mysterious deaths.
I didn't play all weekend as I
promised. I was intent on doing so but got side-tracked by
that evil entity known as Super Monkey Ball 2. I don't own the game,
my buddy Dave (JimiThingR) does. When I read Mike's 587 post I
called Dave and told him Friday was going to be Pikmin night. I
brought over my VCR, Game Cube and Pikmin and we were going to play
at the same time and both tape our runs (he's working on Final
Trial). But the extra television set he has didn't work. It's an old
set with a Nintendo 64 logo on it that he got for free from his job
(Babbages). Apparently it was modded, however. You can only run
input into it through an S-video jack and we didn't have S-video at
our disposal. Also, the coaxial plug was disabled so I wouldn't have
been able to tape my runs anyhow. We decided to play SMB2 and got
hooked finding alternate ways to beat levels. That game is
evil.
Tonight (it's 4:00 a.m. Sunday night/Monday morning)
was the first I played Pikmin in about a week and a half. I threw
together a couple of aborted runs and then decided to finish a
crappy one just for fun. Well, the crappy one ended up being a 582
somehow. I mean it's a really crappy run, too. That inspired
me and I tried again. My next run was the 589. The great part about
it was that I realized a couple of things I can do to easily put me
over 600. For example, I don't think attacking the Puffy Blowhog in
the water is worth it because I always have to re-file the pellets
and the battle takes too long for the time allotted. I am going to
start ignoring the P.B. and grabbing the blue 20-pellet instead.
That will put my achievable score at 599. There are a few other
things that can be modified and/or scrapped to make my run more
efficient as well. If I can manage to have a little more time left
at the end of my run, I have a trick up my sleeve for a finale that
will put me over 600. I'm not sure how it's all going to go down for
sure but if I start playing the level again I'll have my 600 soon.
Unfortunately, it's finals week at university so I won't (or
shouldn't) be doing too much Cubing.
That's all for now. I
think I'll try to get some sleep.

Distant
springs-609
Total Score-2207
this followed runs
of 594,596 and 598 which i made silly mistakes on and should all
have been 600+.
i had 3 mds, a yellow 5 misfiled which i am sure
i threw 3 yellows on. i also had 609 as the score as the 10 came up
on the counter. i was too nervous of deaths to do anything else so i
just waited for the end.
im sorry tm, but my video is at home
so i cant tape my runs until next week.
i will send a photo to

Hmmmm.
I always wondered how great it
would be to walk in SnapDragon's shoes. Well, it's a great feeling
but one forgets that trodding upon such hallowed ground makes you a
target. My reign is temporarily vanquished. The italics are
there for a reason. All of my Distant Spring runs that ended up in
the 580s showed massive room for improvement. I always find a way to
work the kinks out. Believe me, I can and will beat Mike's new
score. The question is, how much higher will he make the climb for
me?
Mike, congratulations. You have earned the right to
borrow my crown. Hehe, I'm not trying to belittle your
accomplishment....it's probably the most fantastic Pikmin C.M. feat
yet. But sooner or later you're going to either have to return the
crown or share it. I'd prefer the latter. I know that you are good
enough and persistent enough to match or break any score out there
so I think a tie would make both our lives better. Still, the
pressure is what keeps us pushing the limits and doing the
impossible. There has got to be some score ceiling for this level,
though. I guess it's up to the two of us to find it.
Poor
Ferret! I've got his previously god-like score beaten by 7 and Mike
is up on him by 27! This is freakish. I haven't seen Ferret
online or on AIM for a long time. I wonder how he'd react to this
senseless onslaught.
Well, I have difficult exams tomorrow
and Wednesday so I'll have to get Pikmin runs in when I get a
chance. I still can't figure out how Mike finds the time to get that
stupid blue 20-pellet in. It's the difference between him and me
right now. Grrrrrrr!

Distant Spring - 593 (not on
tape)
This was my first 600 run. Unfortunately, it was
terrible. I had seven mysterious deaths - far more than my average
of two. I also had a misfiled yellow one-pellet. That's it, though.
I'm looking at a maximum of 603 with my current strategy so I need
to make some adjustments if I want to get back in the hunt with
Mike.
This time I reverted back to not flowering my
army of 88 blues at the end. For some reason I have more success
with unflowered blues because they don't carry the red and yellow
pellets as quickly so I can catch up with them after having taken
care of other business. Eventually I'm going to have to flower them,
however.
I wasn't taping my run because I knew that I would
probably land in the 590's before the 600's. It was nice to play
without that tape running...it makes me feel naked before the
spectators. I can also hit pause to gather my thoughts if necessary,
a luxury that isn't affordable when taping.
Still have plenty
of studying to do all day today and tomorrow, but I just wanted to
show you all that I'm not going away.

and i couldnt find him yesterday. i will hopefully find him today
and email you the pic tonight (i am english so my clock is only one

I will resume playing distant spring next
week at home with the video running, i finished my 609 with 10 on
the countdown so i expect to improve my score, maybe an extra
wollywog or puffy bulbear. i am currently attempting the 9 days no
deaths challenge, did first 4 days with ease last night so will do
more tonight.
Nath, if we find the limit to distant springs i
hope we both reach it, as if you did not keep improving your scores
then i would have had no motivation to go for bigger scores and
would never have reached 600. cheers for that.
And just one
thing, can i ask ahylis, nath or someone elso to do a scoreboard

I'm starting to focus on FN. I've made a large
map for planning and have copies of a smaller version for actually
making notes on.
I've got a preliminary plan laid out which
actually requires a very different set of pellets from the breadbug
than either Nathan's or Rogue's stated patterns. I actually need
either 2 red 5 pellets or one red and one blue. Yellow screws me up
because I end up with 35 yellows WITHOUT anything from the breadbug!
And I get almost no extra red. So I have to get them from the
breadbug and the two multicolor pellet posies. Of those 17 potential
Pikmin, I need 12 red and 5 blue to end up with a 35, 33, 32
distribution. And I need the even distribution. In fact, I would
prefer even fewer yellows and a higher blue/red count. but it can't
be with this pattern.
I haven't given it a shot yet though,
so I may post tomorrow saying to ignore my whole ramble here.
:-)
But it should work well enough to get me into the 400's.
Probably not to 442 or higher, but we'll see.

Having followed both Ahlyis's and Nathan's
suggestions, and having made a further change to my strat, I am
proud to announce that I have made a slight
improvement:
FN -- 335
Okay, so it's not an
achievement that's likely to draw attention away from the fight
between the Masters of the (Pikmin) Universe that's currently
underway over in the Distant Spring, but I'm glad to have finally
broken through what seemed an impenetrable barrier. I decided to
alter my second run so that I picked up the blue and yellow 5s on
the way to the BLL area, rather than leaving them until the
end.
I think I might be able to break 350 with this strat. If
I manage to do that, I might just leave it at that and be content --
I just don't have the time needed to constantly improve my scores.
In the hour or so I had available to play last night, I managed two
runs through FN and at least 10 resets (because that stupid
#$@%&%@ breadbug kept dropping two yellows!!!). I don't think
one can expect to improve to much when one can only manage two runs
every three or four days...

Well, the pattern I mentioned above has come to
fruition. I tweaked it some last night and got lucky with the
breadbug dropping a red and blue fairly often. so now I can
announce...
FN - 403
Combined Total - 1998 - just 2
short of 'elitedom', but at least I'm back ahead of Grenade!
:-)
My pattern can be easily tweaked to yield 2 more, but
that's about it. I have every Pikmin busy on every run. I'll need to
find a more efficient method of doing things. That or I'll have to
copy someone else's pattern.
But at least I've managed to
break the 400 barrier now, and with a 100% original pattern.
:-)

Sorry Ahlyis, but you're going to have a little
competition here.
Distant Spring: 492
Combined
Total: 1999
I would have reached 2000 right away if a
stupid wollywog hadn't squished 7 blues in one attack. I couldn't
whistle to them since the frog landed right on Olimar and I couldn't
whistle... darn

It's on then. :-)
But it might take me a
while to really get going. Not sure I can play tonight. Tomorrow my
brother is bringing his PC over for some network gaming. Friday...
well, maybe. Maybe tonight too. Have to wait and see
:-)

INCHES.
Forest of Hope -
562
Finally, though, I have a pattern that works. I
thought I had 567 on that run - might have misfiled a 10. Two
deaths. More to the point, it was the first time I've ever gotten
everything in (albeit just barely). I'm sure I'll be able to use
this pattern to get the elusive-for-me 569.

FoH - 567
Two deaths. Won't be
long now.

Excellent work Ahlyis. I dream of one day being
able to report a 400 on FN. Aaah, such sweet dreams...
And,
TomatoMan, things are looking good. I won't say congratulations yet,
since I'm sure your next post will announce the even better score of
569.

Ugh. Maddening. I wanted to make one last push
and be done tonight, but it didn't happen. Two 567s, a 566, and a
couple other 560+s. One 567 had two mystery deaths, I finished in
plenty of time.
A lot has to go right to get a perfect, even
if you're totally in a groove. With these longer ones (FoH is 20+
minutes), a late screw-up is a REAL bummer. :/
Ah well. I'll
get it eventually.

Man, Distant Spring is one cruel, cruel
mistress. She takes and takes but rarely gives back. Just look at
what she made me suffer today (my first day not having to study for
finals):
Distant Spring - 594
A measly improvement
of one. A lousy run with a lot of mysterious deaths. Nothing new.
The worst part of this one was that at the end when I was pulling
down blues, I realized that one of my red 10 pellets hadn't started
moving. It was the one all the way at the back of the level and when
I got to it I found there were just 9 Pikmin on it. Ouch. I hate
Pikmin. They're incorrigible. Still managed to get that tyrannical
10-pellet in but it cost me lots of time I needed to bring in some
last-second stuff. This was still a new high for me, albeit a
miniscule one, until:
Distant Spring - 600
Finally
made it to 600, putting me two points shy of the next-to-impossible
2200 mark. Had a lot of trouble with misfiling this time. I've
decided it best to not worry about misfiling Wollywog pellets when I
have all blues at the end. It saves me heaps of time and effort so I
can stay focused. Unfortunately, all of those 5-pellets were red or
yellow. Suckage. Until:
Distant Spring - 603
Still
painfully shy of Mike, but encouraging all the same. Lots of
misfilings and deaths again. Sloppy and behind schedule throughout.
Had a blue 5-pellet and a blue one-pellet near the onion at the end.
But another new high, until:
Distant Spring - 605
Big, big OUCH! Still, deaths and misfilings. Not sure of
the details on this one, but who gives a crap? You've seen this
coming since you started reading this oversized post, so I may as
well cut to the chase:
Distant Spring - 612
I
counted the misfilings and deaths on this one: 7 points lost from
misfiling, 2 Pikmin mysteriously killed. This run was even behind my
schedule. I have ideas for a possible 520-535 but it all depends on
deaths and misfilings. I'm not going to bother going into details
because I'm in a battle royale with Mike and strategists must be
secretive, a point I'm sure Mike is well aware of. Mike, I've
returned your left hook with a nasty jab of my own. I expect you'll
continue sparring with me. I thought about not posting this score
yet so I could take advantage of your time playing the 9 Days, No
Deaths challenge, but I'd rather be a good sportsman and make you
aware of my breakthrough. I'm sure you can pummel this score with
enough effort, but I don't plan on abandoning the level. My score
will keep rising. I expect yours to as well.
JimiThingR was
there to witness the feat, and I to witness one of his own Pikmin
achievements. I'll let him post his milestone himself for fear of
soiling his glory. Suffice to say, I think he has set an interesting
record on a certain level. Hope I've built up a little
suspense.
TomatoMan, I'm really happy to see that you're on
the verge of finishing FoH. I know how you feel having those
567's...I had four of them before I finally finished without MD's.
If anybody deserves another perfection, it's you. You and Ahlyis
have single-handedly kept this thread running strong for a year now.
As Rob said, I'll save my congratulations for your imminent
success.
By the way, I did not tape this. I can beat this.
Big time. And Mike can, too. It's a vicious level, but Mike and I
are making it our...you know what. Heh.
Viva La
Pikmin!
