These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Thanks, Ahlyis! Mike, if you want to make a copy of your tape and then mail me one, that would be great; I'll pay for the conversion and rip it for the DVD/video. (If you pull a 482 a week later, though, I'll be grumbling! :)

My cube did something wierd yesterday on a FN run: the screen went black, as if it had powered off. It was actually still running: I instinctively paused it, switched the TV off and on again, and it came back where it was and I was able to resume. I'm pretty sure it wan't the TV.

I sometimes wonder how well the Cube will age: I've still got ny NES and SNES (and my Atari 2600 and many other old consoles!), and with no moving parts they're pretty easy to keep up, but I'm definitely a collector, and don't want my Cube to be in the trash after a year or two.

I love my old consoles! They're great!

Yup Ahlyis, that's what happened to my friend as well. He had to replace the motherboard or what the hell you guys call it. It was an expencive repair, so you'd better dig up that receit! I hate to hear about a wounded Gamecube. :(

Gosh! I haven't played Pikmin at all today. Just didn't feel like it. However, the hunger for a higher total combined score still rumbles within! I have to beat TomatoMan! Let us just hope that I wont get any new games for x-mas, as they will take my attention away from Pikmin.*

*TomatoMan: e-mail me if you want my adress, then you can send me a gift :P Then you'll be the best Pikminer of us two... for the moment! :)

Greatmagnus: Give a piccie now! If you just keep up this hoax everyone will hate you! *cough*Blackmage*cough*

This may seem like a stupid question, but who or what is Blackmage? And is there any way to take a pic without a digital camera? I dont want to go buy one just for video games. And since I got 452, I have not gotten close to it. ****.

I should remind you that you're leading, Stein. :) I'm trying to "roll my own" with FN and DS, although I did read over some of the FN strats and have borrowed a few ideas. I think my current strat has a max of 405, though, and I've been nowhere near 400 since I hit it the other day.

I know that I'm getting Metroid for xmas, and possibly Animal Crossing - and heck, I'm only about 1/4 of the way through Mario, and I've been playing Crazy Taxi a lot too, which I love - quick, wicked fun adrenaline rush! However, Pikmin always works its way back into the Cube - I play it now almost as much as I did when I got it last year!

Magnus: take a regular picture and scan it if you don't have a digital. The policy on the board is any claim of a top 3 score needs to be verified. We've had frauds in here spoiling the fun with fake high scores, so I'm afraid that's that. We don't even mark our OWN scores as approved until we've got a screenshot with a name and date, even the regulars here that everybody knows and trusts.

Ok, I don't want any of my scores posted unless their the best. When I beat 472, I will scan it and send it in. Oh, and who do I send it to again?

I know! And it feels great! I think we'll need an update of the scoreboard on christmas eve..! Not that there are any new scores, but I could certainly dig the idea of being ahead of you on a hi-score list!

greatmagnus: Blackmage was a troll as Ahlyis so firmly said it. He posted false scores and got all of us kinda angry. He's now known as Whitemage, but I haven't seen him in a while. I think TM has the old topics, you could find blackmage, and you'll know all about him.

I'm afraid I'm getting a few games for christmas (LOL)!
So I really have to hope for a quick return to Pikmin, it's the best game so far! And I guess you guys are as eager as I am when it comes to Pikmin 2? Ohh.... It'll surely be great!

Not a problem.

I'll be holding my breath!

Okay, I'm going to be the first to say it. The fella known as greatmagnus is, in my opinion, Blackmage. Yeah, I know. Now we'll be reading post after post from greatmagnus saying, "I am not Blackmage, who the hell is Blackmage?" But I've said it. And here's why:
(1) Blackmage's favorite level to lie about was Forest Navel. Who else picks the Forest Navel to lie about? No one. Just Blackmage. And now magnus. Coincidence? It would seem a better plan to lie about the easier levels, more believable. Blackmage and magnus are the only ones so far to choose Forest Navel as their kingdom of lies.
(2) Greatmagnus already said, "who or what is Blackmage?" I remember a certain person named Whitemage who asked the very same question quite often. The fact that greatmagnus immediately responded to Stein's tiny mention of the name Blackmage is interesting.
(3) Maybe I'm getting stupid now, but think about this one: Blackmage...greatmagnus. It could just be another big coincidence, but when you combine this tidbit with the giant lie on Forest Navel, you'll probably feel the same as me.
(4) I remember the approximate time when greatmagnus first started posting on the Pikmin boards. And I have read every topic about this game in the last few months. Ever since greatmagnus first began posting, there have been absolutely ZERO posts from Blackmage and Whitemage. That's the kicker. I know I am correct.

Greatmagnus, you do not have that score. In fact, I highly doubt you've even broken 400 on Forest Navel. The others here are humoring you because they know that you won't be able to provide any proof of the score anyway. But I don't feel comfortable letting someone feel he has gotten away with a lie. So that's all I'll say. I'm done with you.

Mike, you deserve the crown now. *Passes Mike the Pikmin Challenge Mode crown* Congratulations on your 472. Believe me, a 472 on Forest Navel is the most difficult achievement in Pikmin to date. Our scores on Distant Spring don't even compare. I have a strat right now that can yield a 472. I thought of it the day before you posted the score. I was going to pursue it but you got there first. I'm not sure if it's worth spending the amount of time it takes to get that score now since I would be only the second to do it.

I think I am retiring from Pikmin. Not for good - I'm sure I'll be playing it again in the not-so-distant future. But I cannot take it any longer. I've had a couple of 620+ runs on the Distant Spring ruined by freak mishaps at the end of the runs. Those are disheartening. It's not worth pouring so much energy into such an unreliable level. And then there's Forest Navel...I've already explained that situation. By the way, I have not doubt that Mike will get the 482. It has to be possible. Just one more ten-pellet and it's in the bank. Mike will do it. I'm bowing out of the race.

Congratulations to Stein, Tomato, Ahlyis, and everyone else who have been putting up new scores. It seems funny that there is a full-on Challenge Mode revival going on, something I had been really hoping for, and I am dropping out of the excitement in the midst of it. I won't be pulling a SnapDragon, however. I'll be hanging around the boards for a long time, rooting for you guys. You can't rid of me easily. Heh.

That's all for now.

One, I dont care what his fovorite level was or is. What I do care about is people like you who accuse others that are better then them of cheating. Two, so I saw the post and was curiose, that does not mean anything. Look in the context it was in. If someone wasnt here when he was, say, someone like me, that person might want to know what other people were going to accuse them of. Three. There is a game called Magi-Nation for the gameboy, and I really do like that game, and the main character is Great Magnus Kyros. And guess what my AIM name is...could it be..Great Magnus Kyros? And if I do not own some piece of equipment that lets me put stuuf on the web, it is really not your buisness. Four. So they left and I came. I got the game after all of yal. And until you search every single board, post, topic, or anything, I do not think that you have the right to accuse anyine of anything. And here is a brainbuster for ya. I am 13, white, 8th grade, Austin Tx, 78758. Go accuse someone else who cares. Later.

Oh, now that I read his post a little more clearly, I see that he accused me then he left. Wow, what a great person, accuseing someone then leaving. And how do we know that he wasnt Blackmug or whatever, we dont. We dont know who any of us are, or anything. And did blackslug do anything like pikmin wars? I want to know this. No one else has the right to accuse me until they have searched every board there is. I know that this is a little harsh, but I dont want to be called a cheater when I am not. Later.

Better than me? I have a verified 452 on Forest Navel, not to mention the current top score for Distant Spring and the second highest overall score on GameFAQs.

What does it matter how old you are, what race you are, or where you live and the zip code of that state? I can't understand why you felt the need to post such information...nor why you labeled it a "brainbuster."

And you don't have that score. If you insist on pretending you do, post a strategy for us to examine. That's as good as a picture on this thread.

Even if you aren't Blackmage, and you will never fully convince me you aren't, you are as poor a liar as he was. So you two are the same in essence even if you are different in reality.

And remember, we do have the right to accuse someone of lying. We've kept this thread going for a whole year now - nearly 1800 posts. We've seen dozens of people come and go and have confronted several frauds. Our dedication is what warrants us to expose fraud.

If I were to go into one of your topics, such as "Pikmin Wars," and pull an Ultramind stunt on you, you would be angry with me. Likewise, your thoughtlessness on our board offends me, especially when you claim to have a score I worked very hard to achieve. Mike and Rogue should be chewing you out as well.

Stick to your RPG boards.

We know that I am not an impostor (a.k.a. Blackmage with another handle) because I have verified all of my scores with photos, posted a video of the FN 452, and have been here long enough to have full credibility. I also have a completely different (and, I might add, far more refined) writing style than Blackmage did. None of these things can be said for you.

Actually, you dont.

1.Offensive Posting: Sexually explicit/racist/hate speech and threats
2.Censor Bypass: Not completely obscuring offensive/banned words (only suffixes are okay)
3.Flaming (Insulting Other Users): Clear insults of other board users
4.Trolling (Inciting Flames): Intending solely to annoy and/or offend other posters
5.Illegal Activities: ROM/Warez/MP3/Cracks Begging and/or Providing
6.Spam: Advertising Web Sites, Other Boards, For Sale/Rent/Trade
7.Off-Topic Posting: Posting outside of the board description
8.Spoilers without Warning: Revealing critical plot details with no warning
9.Disruptive Posting: ALL CAPS, large blank posts, multiple hard-to-read posts, mass bumping, etc.
You broke 3, 4, and 7. I said before, you have no right. How do we know that you did or can do anything you say/said?
I bet there are hundreds if not thousands of websites that have pictures/movies of achieving this. I will say it again, back off. Later.

Well, I see you've got your little rulebook handy to assist you in your fight. This is not an off-topic debate we are having. It concerns a Challenge Mode score. The topic says "Challenge Mode Scores." So I am not breaking rule 7 of the TOS. I am also not flaming you. However, one could easily mark me for trolling. I knew my thoughts would annoy you before I posted them. You may mark me if you wish, I don't really care. I've been a GameFAQs user for a year now and have never been modified, so one or two little trolling incidents aren't going to hurt me much. That said, please post a strategy for your remarkable FN 452. I'd love to read it.

I'm not even done yet. You suggest that there are probably plenty of sites on the net where one could find videos/pictures of Pikmin Challenge Mode feats. I suggest you try running a search for one of these sites. I love the game so much that I have looked for more places on the net to see what others have done. All I can find are reviews and posts on other message board sites. So far, this is the only place I have found people talking about scores of this caliber.

Plus, look at the picture of my scoreboard:
http://www.geocities.com/lennonsapprentice
You'll notice that there is a gigantic and highly legible piece of paper on the television screen with my name on it. Yes, I could have taken someone else's screen shot and edited it with a program to make it look like I had put that note up there. But where would I have found that screen shot in the first place? I dare you to find one with those exact scores.

Well, about the rulebook, all you have to do is hit someones message detail, copy, an then back up. And as for you saying it is not off topic, here is a quote from the very first page, first post, and that decides what the topic is. "Anyone is welcome to post their scores here and get some recognition, even if they're not in the running for the high-score charts. Don't be intimidated by the scores here; many of us have played each individual level hundreds of times, and there's no shame in not reaching that level of hardcoreness. :)" It says that we can post our scores, not have to verify them, and it does not say that we can accuse others about what they have said. And as for flaming, lets go to the term..Posts clearly insulting other board members, individually or as a group, directly or indirectly, are not allowed. Accusing someone of being a cheater is an insult. And as for the website thing, your right, you probably did do all that stuff, but a few of us 13 year old dont have cameras or scanners. We also cant write a paper to save our lives. A FAQ about the game is one thing, but a challege mode guide, down to the second, making it so that you have to write as you play, I cannot do. So I had one really good run, something that I wont do for a long time to come. I didnt ask for me to be in the top scores, I personally do not care. I just wanted to say something that I had done. But, if you wish to go spreading rumors about others being some guy who always posted stuff that wasnt true, messing with others, and ruining good topics, that makes you no better than the person you are accusing them of being.

A note on posting strategies for Challenge Mode:

I doubt that any of us who have posted such strategies actually wrote as we played. When I achieve a great score, it is because I have spent many hours trying over and over again to tweak my strat enough to yield some extra points. After this much practice with my strategy, I remember every single detail of it in my head for a long time afterwards. In other words, if you really did get an FN 452, you would remember the details of it almost perfectly without having to replay it. Yes, I am serious.

So I had one really good run, something that I wont do for a long time to come.

Ha! I laugh at that quote. So you were just playing Forest Navel one day and BLAMMO, you got a 452, huh? I can honestly say that such a "lucky" feat is impossible. Forest Navel takes hundreds of runs to get a 452 on, even if you are borrowing someone else's strategy. And there is very, very little room for error. Just admit you didn't achieve the score and I will stop hounding you. All I ask is that people have some RESPECT (or pity if you prefer) for the people on this thread who have poured so much time and energy into achieving these scores. Can't you see why I'm angry with you, greatmagnus? You're right, I was out of line insisting you were Blackmage. You're probably not...my whole argument was based on speculation and I apologize for that. But I ask now that you confess that you...fabricated...your score. I'll shut up if you do that much. It's very obvious that you don't have the score.

I seem to remember another incident earlier in this thread where you posted a FoH 501. Then, a couple of days later, you posted a FoH 400 and wrote that you were "doing the cabbagepatch" in celebration. Would you care to explain that incident as well?

New High:

DS - 522
Combined Total - 2120

My, my... I go offline for a week or so and all heck breaks loose.

Congrats to all the new scores: Ahlyis on 515 (sorry to hear about the 'Cube troubles), Tomatoman on getting three perfects and breaking 400 on FN, Superstein on FN 440, robluvnic on takin' FN 360 down, I hope I didn't forget anyone (a lot to read at once).

Mike... truly amazing. I was pretty sure that 462 was possible, I have an untested strat for 457, but never did I think that anything above 462 was possible, not even 463. I should thank you, your score probably saved me from hours of playing and planning for 457. You are the man, but you still stink...

Nathan, I hear you on retirement. I think I'll push DS a little, but the end has to be near.

I'll get that screenshot when I return to work after the new year.

Happy Holidays everyone.

greatmagnus, please provide a walkthrough for your FN score or it will not be acknowledged. This is a very reasonable request by some players who have invested a great deal of time on a complicated level. I don't need a novel, an outline that shows a grasp of the level will do. I think this is very fair, regardless of age or writing skills. If you disagree, this is probably not the thread for you.

With high scores comes the burden of proof.

3. 234
4. 190
5. 000

Thanks robluvsnic and Mike. I've been playing Pikmin but no great improvement at all. If I finally managed to get onto the tail end of the high score lists then I'd post my scores gladly, but alas, the Poor wee GasMan has no news to report. Lots of 250s at Impact Site and not much else worthy of note to be honest. I think I've hit a skill barrier or something which is hindering my progress. :)

Nice to see everyone again. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a good time over the coming week or two.

Posted by TomatoMan - 12/24/2002 10:04:05 AM

All I'm going to say on the current furor is this:

NOBODY scores a 452 on FN by "accident". You might get 350 on an accidentally good run. Not 452. That happens with an insane, phenomenal, meticulously-tuned plan or not at all.

Now then:

Nathan! Don't stop! C'mon man, push that 620! Take a break and come back to it. :)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not retiring! (Of course, if anybody's going to retire, Nathan and Mike are both truly scraping the heavens now and have the best excuses!) I know I'm getting Metroid tomorrow, and one of these days I've got to tackle Mario Sunshine eventually, but none of them seem to grip me the way Pikmin continues to. Guess I've just got that anal perfectionist thing going on, I always want to do it just a LITTLE more efficiently, find a time-saving trick... I never get enough of seeing armies of pellets marching into the onions in nice neat rows... order out of chaos. And so forth. :)

After a few days work on FT...

FT - 287

Everything returned except a yellow 10 and two deaths on BLL. And this was on a run with lots of errors. Like, I wasted tons of time on the pellets in the back area. I had to keep calling back pikmin that grabbed the wrong pellets.

FT has a pretty big margin for error, so progress on this level came pretty fast. But, maybe it just seems easy after all the time I spent on the Forest of Hell...

Anyway, I look forward to attaining another perfect for Christmas...

Dragorn - FWIW, it sounds like we had similar experiences. I spent ages on FoH before getting the perfect, and picked up FT next and saw dramatic improvements immediately. Must have learned something key in all the FoH thrashing!

I do think I got the perfect on FT with a bit of luck - you just plain need luck not to have ANY deaths against the frog, beady, and the snagret - but I'm not complaining! I probably should have had to work harder, but I feel like I paid my dues on FoH. :)

well, all hell has broken loose on this board. GreatMagnus, i do not think you have the right to come on this board and insult one of the greatest pikminers ever. Nathan was the first to get 452 on forest navel, has three other perfects and a 600+ score on distant spring. To say you are better than him makes me want to cry with laughter.

If you can take the time to write us a valid strategy for this level on how to get a 452 then maybe we will believe you. But forest navel is much harder than foh,ft, or is. To post a score of 452 on fn is going to sound unbelievable if you dont have perfects on these levels.

New score for me

Forest Navel-480-on tape

This was a practice run and the breadbug dropped a blue and a red pellet so i misfiled the red pellet to the blue onion and carried on. After a shaky start, perfection followed and my new strat kicked in beautifully and everything was in with 4 on the counter. Perfection is possible!!
Even more tragic, i had a run where the breadbug dropped two blue pellets and everything was going ok but near the end, i was getting the last few 5 pellets i accidentally threw some yellows on a blue 5 without realising and back at the onion it starting going towards the yellow onion. i realised the mistake and quickly put blues on, but just never got back and ended in a 477.

Thanx for the crown nath, but please give fn a few more tries, you never know when inspiration will hit you. I was going to give it up and declare 472 the maximum until i realised how to get the last pellet in. You never know. you could get to 482 before me.

Merry Christmas everyone.

FN is perfectable?!?!

That's huge news!

Oh, man. Gotta see that tape. Keep firing, Mike!

PS. I did get Metroid for X-mas. It is pretty complex, and graphically stunning - I'm going to give it its chance to grip me. However, my first impressions are still that I'm basically walking a prepared path. This makes me realize that one of the key things that makes Pikmin just work for me is the freedom of movement - you can do whatever you want to in the time allowed. This is what gives it its incredible depth, for me. I'm kicking it in Metroid and will definitely play it, but it takes a lot of discipline to keep Pikmin in its box. I won't resist for long. :)

you have metroid prime. I am so jealous, i have to wait till march. Well that gives me plenty of time to get some better scores on pikmin. Plus you will get pikmin 2 before me when that comes out. it is really annoying to live in a pal region.

Stein: Metroid fusion is amazing, but a bit short, especially if you played super metroid.

Mike, I knew you could do it! That's the most brilliant score ever posted to date. Excellent, inconceivable work! I have to admit, when you first got 462 I was rather upset and a touch bitter. But now that you're proving how sickeningly good you are I find that it's actually a lot of fun waiting to see if you can push the limits more. Absolutely brilliant!

As I said before, my retirement will be a temporary thing. I'll be like the Michael Jordan of Pikmin...every now and again I'll step away from the game, hiding behind an auspice of exhaustion, only to suit up again later when I feel the itch to play. I'll go for that 482 eventually, but right now I'm enjoying not having to fall asleep dreaming of new strategies. Pikmin was consuming too much of my thoughts. I need a break.

Rogue, glad to hear you know where I'm coming from on the "retirement" thing. I'm also glad you're planning to improve your DS score considerably before you take your next break.

Rob, I forgot to congratulate you earlier on your work in the Forest Navel. Just keep setting up realistic goals and slowly knocking them down. It sounds like you play Pikmin a lot like I do - I just play to beat myself. If you keep beating yourself, over time you end up with some pretty attractive scores. Keep up the good work, man.

That's all for now. Merry Christmas, everybody.

Wow! A Christmas present to everyone today! Well Since I don't want to feel so left out I might as well let you know that I have just done a 421 in FoH . This is great new to say the least because as you can tell from the leader board my last highest was a 390. That's 31 over baby! How great it is on Christmas day to have such a outburst of scores. That's all for now, I'll post my strat a little later during the week. Good luck to all and Merry Christmas

I've been playing pikmin a lot lately, but i'm gonna start playing metroid now, yay, i'll probably be switching between the games and try and beat my challenge scores again, but for now, i'll post all my new high scores

The Impact Site - 252
The Forest of Hope - 478
The Forest Naval - 357
The Distant Spring - 471
The Final Trial - 260

yay, i'm moving up little by little

Posted by SuperStein - 12/26/2002 8:44:26 AM

Oh my god!

Forest Navel - 442
Combined Total - 2016

I'm so embarresed right now, that's the reason for the "Oh my god!" statement. This was my absolute best run ever! I got everything but the yellow 20 and the yellow 10 in the water behind the onions in. Now you're probably thinking. "Well, that should be a 452?". And you are absolutely right. But I misfiled the last pellet, the red 20 from BLL's lair. Oh.. inches from a splatted Wavebird! It should have been a 452! I just flung a couple, of blues extra som it would make it in, but heck. They made it go to the blue onion... Sooo close.. but now I atleast know that I'm capable of getting the 452 on Forest Navel. That was my goal when I restarted Pikmin. But now when Mike has brought up the score by 28... (soon 30), I think I'll have to stick with Forest Navel for a while.

You're kidding, right? You're too lazy to look in the manual, so you'll just have one of us do it for you?

Read the manual. Sheesh.

It says that we can post our scores, not have to verify them

Actually, it say you do have to verify them for scores in the top 3. You posted a 452 on FN, which is a top 3 score.

I agree with Nathan, and everyone else who has voiced on this so far, your 452 is a fraud. There is absolutely NO way that you got a 452 out of the blue. Apparently you missed the sarcasm in my previous post. I said it would be no problem to leave your scores off the high score board. What I meant was that we'll leave them off the same way we left Blackmage's off.

So far, you have posted a few highly questionable scores and a whole lot of rants/excuses/accusations. Please stop posting on this topic until you mature enough to treat this topic and those of us who post here with the respect we deserve. Like some have already mentioned, many of us have put in MANY hours of play to achieve the scores we have. To have some little punk come in and start making absurd claims is naturally going to upset us. NOBODY achieves a top 3 score on ANY of the levels by 'accident'. Especially not on FN which is one of the toughest Challenge Mode levels in the game.

Mike, please please please post a walkthrough for a 482 FN run. It's not that I doubt you. Not at all. But I'd really like to give it a try! :-)

Of course, that means I'll have to get my cube fixed first. Actually, I can turn on the cube and get into Challenge Mode and start a level. Once the level is started, the cube doesn't need to access the disk again until you finish/quit the level. At that point, it fails to read the disk for me and I have to shut the cube down for a couple of hours and let it cool.

Unfortunately, this means that even if I get a high score, I can't save it. I've tried a couple of DS runs this way, but it's impossible to get any sort of rhythm when you can only do one run! lol

I've found a repair shop, but I can't find the receipt (I bought it back in February or so), so I will have to pay for the repairs. I've got a wedding I've got to save for along with all the rest of the bills, so finding an extra $80 for repairs is gonna take some time unless something comes up.

Your getting married Ahlyis? Congratulations!

I'm going away for a few days now. I'm leaving tomorrow. So don't you go and bring up your scores TomatoMan! Since where I'm headed there is no electricity, so no cubing for me. I think I have to thank the person which gave you metroid for christmas! Probably it'll keep Pikmin in its box for a couple of days!

Mike: I expect FN to be perfected when I get home again! :P

Maybe I'll drop by early tomorrow if I've got the time for it. Anyway! Later guys!
