Pikmin
GameFAQs archives
These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Only a few more,
but still. <grins>
I always seem to run out of time no
matter how I alter the way I do things. Always the bell rings for
halfway through the day just as I move the cardboard box back and I
still have to pull up a load of pikmin from under the
onions...
Getting frustrating now. Might need to try a
different way.

Impact Site - 278
Well, I finally
got it. It took about 20 tries this afternoon. I just happened to
pound the living crap out of the flint beetle. It was the third time
ever that I got the second 5-pellet out of him. I think I figured
out why I only got a 276 on one of the other two tries - I'm pretty
sure that one of the two 5's from the beetle went to the wrong
onion.
So now I have the 278, the 569 and the 442. My Distant
Spring score of 470 is not bad but I very much dislike the level.
And I hate Final Trial - I've played it maybe 10 times and my
highest score is 207. I just don't enjoy playing these levels but
they're the only ones left to play. So I probably won't be posting
scores for a while. I will, however, be checking in to see how other
people are progressing.
Okay, gotta go read more Chekhov.
Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 10/27/2002 7:33:08 PM
Final Trial - 264
Well, I guess
this score negates the comments I made in my last post. I got this
score on my third try - not bad considering my previous high was
207. It would have been a better score but I lost 3 Pikmin to the
Snagret....and then I accidentally killed Olimar on the firespout
while going for the blue 20. Because I killed Olimar the pellets I
had on the way to base didn't count. I would never have gotten the
blue 20 back in time, though. So I think my score would have been
276 if I hadn't committed suicide.
Actually, I'm starting to
enjoy this level. I don't know why....I guess maybe it's because I
don't have to worry about losing ground on the other levels. Maybe
I'll go for the 299. It should be a lot easier than the 278 or the
442 were.

Final Trial - 295
I've got my
final strat at last. There were two or three things I was doing in
my runs that needed to be revised so that I could get the blue 20.
The main thing was that I finally realized you can drop down from
the Snagret area over to the blue 20. I don't think there can
possibly be many different ways of getting a 299. So I doubt if my
strat is terribly unique this time.
I lost three Pikmin to
the Snagret just by being sloppy and drown one in my haste to throw
extra Pikmin on the last returning pellets.
I should have the
299 shortly....then there'll only be Distant Spring left (ugh). By
the way, I did one run on Distant Spring just to see if I wanted to
play it or Final Trial first and ended up with a 481, a tiny
improvement over my previous high of 470.
Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 10/29/2002 11:19:27 PM
Final Trial - 299
Woo-wee, Jethro!
I gone up n' done it! It was close, but I made it....only three days
since I started. This was the quickest level I perfected out of the
four - I had only played the level about 10 times before I started
working on it hardcore the other day. I'm really happy! Now there's
only Distant Spring left to go!
I had two heartbreakers
tonight before I reached the summit. In one of my runs I had every
pellet well on the way back to the onions before the countdown had
even started. I spent a little time adding guys to the bigger
pellets just to make sure everything turned out right. Then I made a
couple of rounds of fireworks when I realized the counter had
stopped at 294. I still had about six seconds left on the countdown
so I ran to the back of the level. I found the red 5-pellet over at
the Snagret gate with only four Pikmin on it....one of the little
turds had failed to grab it! I was so mad but it was too late to
salvage the run. The worst part was that I wasted so much time at
the end when I could've been hunting for errors and correcting
them.
I had another run (two runs before my 299) where I had
one yellow die fighting the Beady Long Legs right as he was dying. I
decided to finish the run just to see what would happen. Long story
short, I ended up killing the Snagret very quickly and got a 298. It
was very upsetting. I'm glad I didn't let it get me down because I
succeeded only two tries later.
So I've got four "perfects"
now. I put "perfects" in quotes because it's still open to debate
whether or not it is possible to get more than 442 on the Forest
Navel. I thought about this possibility long and hard today and
again I came to the conclusion that it is quite impossible. I highly
doubt anyone can make a strong contrary argument.
Forest
Navel was the most difficult. Then Impact Site, Forest of Hope and
Final Trial (in that order). Distant Spring shall be a challenge,
indeed. I'm setting my sights on a 540 but I will approach the level
as I have the others: just try to beat my personal high each time.
I'll have a screen shot of my scores very soon.

Congrats Nathan and cocoapuffs999 on the Final
Trial count. :)
I completed Pikmin last night actually.
Started with a new save and just played most of the day. Was a nice
change of pace. Unfortunately my surviving pikmin numbered less than
total lost pikmin throughout the game so I may need to go and see if
I can fix that. :) Final Trial was a good level, quite enjoyed that.
Also, after figuring out Distant Springs layout it seemed to be a
decent level aswell. Overall, loved every minute of every level in
Pikmin. Will most definitely be playing it over in the not too
distant future. 30 parts in 21 days. I may be slow but I get there
in the end. :D <grins>

I'm getting home in a couple of days,
and looking forward to playing a bit more. Three weeks without my

Distant Spring -
528
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I
can breathe! I can breathe! Woo-hoo! Tomato, your above post was a
little premature. Until just now Rogue was the #1 Pikminer. Rogue
had four perfect scores and a 520 on the Distant Spring....I had
four perfect scores and a 481 on the Distant Spring. But I'm happy
(very very very happy) to announce that your above post is
now completely accurate.
Before this run my highest score
was 495 (I didn't bother posting it because I didn't want to post
until I reached 500). I just kept tinkering with different
strategies until one finally clicked. The big breakthrough was when
I decided to run 100 Pikmin around the level, killing everything and
assigning guys to only the colored pellets. This way I was able to
make an easy swipe of the level toward the end of the run without
worrying about what colors I used. It was also important that I
decided not to worry about the pearls right away. I took care of
them as I passed by on my killing spree. Frankly, I think I'll have
a difficult time recreating my strategy. But remembering the two
techniques above should help a lot.
There were two items I
didn't get that would have been quite feasible had my nerves been
settled: the red 10 on the peninsula not far from the onions and the
frog right by the yellow onion. I was too panicky to bother
with them.
Now I really need to get a screen shot. If
I only could have gotten that frog I would have gotten into second
place behind Ferret! Cocoapuffs, watch your back! That 533 is very
impressive! I really didn't think it would be so hard to break 500
on this level. I pay immense respect to Ferret for his unholy score.
Well, I don't know what else to say so I'm going to wrap it
up. I can't believe I said I wouldn't be posting many scores after I
got my 278. How stupid was that?

though, different strategies for different people. I find it tough
to even get anywhere near my own personal best following anyone

However, it's great that they are all

Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 11/1/2002 11:46:53 AM
Great work, Mike. Forest Navel is a grueling
level because you need every second on the timer. It's
amazing that even one of us got to 442....it's unbelievable that
there are now three of us.
Mike, here's why I am 99.9% sure
that 442 is the highest possible score for FN (I'm trying to think
of the best way to word this): There is a delicate balance when you
are working with such a large level with so many big pellets. Since
many of the valuable pellets take forever to make it to the
onions it is crucial to always have a formidable amount of Pikmin
with you at all times. This seems easy, but when you tackle areas
you need to send a bunch of Pikmin back with big pellets and still
keep a bunch for other areas. In other words, a good amount of
Pikmin need to be at the base whenever you return for
reinforcements. This makes it difficult to alter the delicate
balance by picking up a 20 where you would normally have picked up a
10. Whereas the 10 pellet has made it back to the base by the time
you return, the 20 pellet will still be en route and you will end up
with 10 less Pikmin to work with. On top of all this trouble, the
bridge to the pearl complicates things.
It's hard to put
into words what I'm trying to say. But the basic idea is that it is
incorrect to think that you can simply take your strategy and
replace one of the 20's you normally leave behind with a 10. This
will not work. If you want 452 (assuming it is achievable) it
will most certainly take some hard core adjustments to a
pre-existing strat, possibly even a completely new one.
When
I get sick of Distant Spring I will probably tinker some more with
Forest Navel. As much as I doubt the possibility of 452 or more, I
cannot help but desire to do the "impossible."
That's all
I've got to say. Mike, stick with the level and find out for sure
what the situation is....if you get a 452 it would be a most
commendable feat.
By the way, I'll give you my best
explanation of how to do bold and italic. Here is how
something you want to be in bold will look when you are
typing it:
<.b>452?<./b>
Now if you simply
remove the periods from inside the brackets you will get the desired
effect:
452?!?!?!?
Anything inside the brackets
( < and > ) is referred to as a "tag." Another common tag is
the italics tag. When you want this effect you just
substitute the B's with I's. It's relatively simple. If my
explanation is still inadequate then use a search engine to look for
a beginner's site to writing Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). Hope
this helps.

I forgot to include this in my last post. Xel, I like your work with the strategy guide for Challenge Mode and know that it will be a great help to a lot of players. I didn't even know it was there until you brought it up today. Do you think you could possibly include my Forest of Hope strategy in it? Distant Spring - 542
I'm really
going to have to brainstorm after this one. This run went almost
completely according to the strat I devised to reach 540. I missed
one dwarf bulborb and lost two guys fighting a frog. Other than
those two things, I pulled my strat off. So now I need to really
start working. I'm in second place but to make my score
significantly higher I'm going to need to make some adjustments. I
can think of one frog I could easily work into the strat without
losing much time at all. But that would give me exactly 560
(assuming I don't forget that dwarf bulborb or lose any guys) - I'd
still need an extra 22 to tie Ferret. I never get the blue 20 or any
of the stuff in the center of the level (inside the logs where the
puffy blowhog is) so maybe I could make something of that. Dunno
yet. But I consistently break 500 now and am getting better with
every run.
Mike, good to see you got the bold to work. It'll
make compiling leader boards a little easier. Cocoapuffs, sorry. I
know you'll be fighting with me tooth & nail and it should be a
good battle. I'm looking forward to it. Let's take Ferret down! Xel,
thanks for including me on the Challenge Mode strategy guide.
TomatoMan, hurry up and get back to your Cube! The board is
awfully slow without you.
Enough chatter, back to the

PS Nathan: if you're able to, please start
taping your DS runs if you get close to Ferret's scores. Looks like
his 582 might be lost, although I've got a tape of his
569.

unfortunately no. i am at uni and i left my
video recorder at home. i may bring it to uni next time i go home
and go for it again. i actually could have got a 452, but i was not
thinking at the end and did not realise there were 3 yellows in my
final group i took down to get the last blue 5s so i could of picked
up the yellow 5 as well. well i have not given up this level yet so
i will try and get 452 very soon. and try and tape it if i have my
video recorder.

I submitted v5.5 of my guide about 2 days ago
and it still isn't up yet. Anyone know how long it takes to go
up?
