These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Final Trial 272

All I missed was the blue 20. A 10 also went to the wrong onion.

Posted by robluvsnic - 9/30/2002 10:04:14 PM

Well, first of all, congratulations to all the new perfectos (or near perfectos): Rogue, Nathan, cocoapuffs, Lewellyn.

Second, Mike, thanks for the tip on the frogs -- I already whistle and c-stick, but the bit about whistling when there's only 1/4 health left is inspired!

Thirdly, after all my moaning about not getting to play very often, I got a good 5 or 6 hours in on the weekend and have made a few improvements:

FoH -- 444
DS -- 437
FT -- 220

I think that might get me in to a couple of top 15s (aaaah, what an achievement :P )

Impact Site - 276

Almost had it! Argh! I find this level remarkably easy now that I have worked so much on the more difficult levels. Back when I used to play only the Impact Site I got so good at it that I got 273's almost every time I tried. Now I'm even better at the level but constantly have to end my runs if the beetle doesn't yield the extra five. I've gotten the extra five twice in the past 20 or so runs. The first time I barely missed 278. I ended with 258 because I accidentally put only 19 yellows on the yellow 20. I was pretty angry, naturally. Then the second time I was convinced that I had done it. But somehow I must have misfiled two one-pellets or something because I was disappointed to see the score stop at 276. Bummer.

Anyway, I took the picture of my scoreboard finally. It's starting to look quite impressive. One note: I don't know if any of you remember this but about four months ago I was playing Pikmin with my buddy Dave (JimiThingR) and we were switching off memory cards so that we wouldn't achieve any scores for each other. Well, we screwed up and switched cards with the power on. I don't know why we were so stupid. Long story short, all of his scores (including his regular mode scores) replaced all of mine on my card. I was angry as hell because at the time I had five 273's on Impact Site. He already had one 273 on IS so I didn't have to replay the level. I am noting this because older members of this Pikmin Challenge Mode "club" will remember the photo of my five 273's and will wonder why I have a 271 in my number five slot now. All of the other scores are correct, though.

The photo can be viewed at:

Looks like soon everyone's going to have a 273/278 on IS (except for me, since I don't know that I have that much patience).

Just a note for the next top 15 update. The last DS list still has blackmage 200 among the top 15. Was his expulsion applicable only to the FN list?

I'll vouch for Nathan's earlier feats on IS. He was the second to reach 273 and the first to fill out his high score list with five 273s. That's why he gets special credit right below Snap on my IS vid. :)

Looks like I'm really getting dusted now that the fifth 278 isn't far off. I thought I'd be sitting there by myself for a good long time! And I'm nowhere near the top scores on any of the other levels. *SIGH*

j/k. :) Great work everyone, I clearly have to kick it up a notch if I want to stay in the l33t mix!

Hope you don't mind me making it a .jpg instead cocoapuffs, it took so much space of my ftp as a .bmp

And I only have a total of 20/25 MB or so :P

I'm still stuck on a feeble 172 and I'm still proud of that achievement after my pathetic first attempt. What can I say? I'm easily pleased. :)

Glad I could get into the mix:

FoH - 569

This was unbelievable, after several runs over the weekend that were nowhere close, I did this on my first run last night. After I cleared the snagret area with no deaths and great time my heart was pounding like a guy getting it for the first time.

This was especially satisfying because FoH was the first level I really worked on and planned out. I left it in the mid 400's when I got into the other levels but always felt there was unfinished business. Screen shot will follow soon, and congrats to all the other high scores and thanks, Nathan, for the encouragement.

I thought I'd have a place to myself. I got 268 on IS last night. I had a red 1 and a red 5 under the onion, being grabbed when time expired. The red 1 got counted, but the red 5 was there at the same time and didn't make it. That's how close it was. So I thought I'd be reporting a 268 today.

Instead, I played a couple more rounds...

IS - 273

This is with 99% my own pattern. True, I got some ideas from TomatoMan's video, and thanks go out to him, but this really is my own pattern. I attack the Breadbug immediately with my reds. I get the yellow 1 on the ledge by the box early on. I get the other pellets in the start area in a different order. I put 10 Pikmin, mostly yellows, to work on the box immediately after starting the 3 five pellets back. I take mostly blues, but about 10 yellows and a couple of reds in after the Flint Beetle. I get the red 20 from the ground, before taking the rest up the box (makes it a little easier to go up the box and since I'm over there waiting for two yellows to get bombs anyway, might as well toss the reds right then). The only thing I took directly from TomatoMan is getting the blue 1 over the ridge by the 3 five pellets.

I finished with the counter at about 5 twice last night. Once with a 273 and once with a 271 (no idea why it wasn't also a 273). Two things remain now. 278 obviously! And to get it a little easier, I'm gonna try to tweak my pattern a little to take nearly all blues with little or no reds and yellows when I go after the Flint Beetle.

i just wont post scores here then unless someone explains who blackmage is and why he makes people not trust me.

Read the whole thread. Not the 10 or so messages by "blackmage 200" which have been deleted or moderated. Note how similar your name is to his. Note how new your account is. Think about this for a while and see if you can understand our skepticism.

Blackmage 200 posted bogus scores and when called on it, eventually resorted to trolling. Your name and writing style are EXTREMELY similar to his.

I'm perfectly happy to accept your (or his) scores, provided you can provide a screen pic. I'm really sorry if this is a burden to you. the top scores require a screenshot now anyway, but because of the problem we had with blacknmage 200, I think we'll need a screenshot for at least one of your scores.

Posted by Ahlyis - 10/1/2002 12:31:59 PM

No, only scores in the top 3 for each level need pics. Whitemage and Blackmage are a special case.

Whitemage, if you need help, check out the FAQs. There's one specifically for challenge mode. Either that, or tell us specifically what you need help with. Blanket help questions won't get much of a response.

Congrats Rouge7 on that 569.

Anyway Ahlyis I am using your FT strat which is very helpful. I was wondering if you could tell me where you usually are when the first, second and third bell go off. That would be very helpful. Thanks

Quick update here. I knew if I kept plugging away at Impact Site I would suss something out. Finally managed to better my previous and had a good load of pellets heading to the onions as the counter hit zero. New best of 195. Nothing spectacular against everyones scores here but it all seems to be gradually clicking into place. :)

I only remember one bell, must be the first. While the second bridge is building, you have tossed the 10 reds up on the fire jet walkway and you are busy killing the sheargrubs as just Olimar, that's when the bell usually sounds. On a really good run, I have killed the grubs and am about to move the reds when the bell sounds.

I never noticed the other bells or where I was at the time. Sorry. You could always watch my video and find out.

Moving on up

Final Trial 289

Posted by SuperStein - 10/2/2002 6:32:08 AM

I checked the video out and noticed where the last 2 bell rings are:

#2: When you leave BLL's area and head for the snagret (It rings precisely (spelling? :P) when you walk through the gate!)
#3: Rings after you have collected the sheargrubs with your newly plucked yellows, it's when the last ten pellets are coming off the bridge

I'll give you the hurry up warning as well:
Comes right after you kill the last animal in the area. The little bulbear in the grass by the yellow onion!

Weyhey, finally manage to get past the 200 mark. Now at a total of 208 pikmin on Impact Site. Had another few ones and fives heading to the onions. Probably a 225 if I hadn't messed up with the three ten pellets on the tree trunk.

TopicMaster - Yeah, I got stuck around 160s aswell. I figured out that it was just bad management of time that was the trouble. I ended up running backwards and forwards when I could've took a few extra pikmin and collected pellets as I went. :) My main goal intially is to get rid of the pellet stealing bug, grab a few 'ones' and get rid of the pellets the bug dropped when it got killed. Then work on the fives at the side collecting ones as I go. Up to the trunk where the three tens are and then I proceed to move the box while just clearing up any I may have missed.

At that point however everything is almost experimental because I haven't decided whether I want to sort out the area after the cardboard box or to go for the area where the spaceship used to land. That 208 attempt though had me getting the red 20 pellet, yellow 20 pellet, destroying the wall and getting the blue 20 pellet. Using all the rest that were available to pick any one pellets around the area. Missed the yellow five across the water though. Needs a good bit of tweaking till I get myself comfortable in that area. :)

Posted by Rouge7 - 10/2/2002 11:43:03 AM

Thanks for posting my pic TomatoMan, I don't feel like a slacker anymore...

Ahlyis, yeah IS gives me a lot of trouble. The flint beetle is one thing, I almost always need the whole time it's up to hit it 5 times, the other is I just don't clear the rest out fast enough to make up for this. Think I'll give it about a week and then see...

Hey cocopuffs, nice work and keep plugging on FT!

R7

Posted by GasMan - 10/2/2002 4:12:16 PM

Slight improvement on Impact Site to 219.

If I may ask a question though... I was heading up the ramp across the box and every single time I attempt this I always drop a good load of pikmin which I usually end up needing a little further on. Wondering if anyone has any hints for me here? I've been using the c-stick to try and get them to stay together but I believe I must be doing something wrong or else something I'm missing.

Posted by TomatoMan - 10/2/2002 8:20:21 PM

Gas Man: go back for them. Do it quickly. :)

TM

Posted by SuperStein - 10/3/2002 2:13:43 AM

I'm using a pretty good method to get all of'em up at the same time. Walk as far away from the incline as you can. Start tilting the c-stick from left to right fast, and run ahead and upwards WHILE your still tilting the control stick from left to right. The Pikmin should make a quite long thin stream of pikmin after you!

Posted by GasMan - 10/3/2002 6:09:24 AM

Thanks fellas, appreciate the tips. :) It's all about the organisation, I can't stand mess. Has to be tidy. Pikmin stuck in a cardboard box do my nut in... and on that note...

A new score on Impact Site of 228. I ended up missing everything in the area where the space ship crashed. Think I got the blue 5 right enough.

Very odd how much time I've spent on this game. Between this and Smash Brothers Melee, there's just not enough time in the day.

Note to self - Get on with main story mode of Pikmin. :)

Minor improvement using Nathan's FOH strat: 514

Nathan, you must have some good speed tricks! I had 3 more dwarfs about to be sucked up when time expired, but I missed one more, the red 20, the yellow 10, and the flowers by the yellow 10. I've made some improvements trying it a few times, but I can't even get the blues in the water to the bridge before the first bell, and it slides downhill from there. :)

Slight new high:

IS - 266

That's right, one measly pellet from the flint beetle. I'm getting better at the rest of the level, my beginning is much smoother than it was. In fact, a few runs after this I hit the beetle 5 times for a chance at 273, but I failed to get two pikmin on a red 1 right away at the end and then ran into the firespout twice on my way to the last yellow 5. Both pellets reached the onions, but didn't get sucked up in time for a disappointing second 266...

TM

Posted by Rouge7 - 10/9/2002 1:28:07 PM

Thanks, TomatoMan. I don't see how you could get more pellets out of the beetle. Even if there was a cheat to make it stay up longer, you would have to hit it 12 or more times (I think 11 is the most anyone has gotten) and have time left to clear the rest of the level. I think 278 is the limit.
