Distant Spring - 553

I had no idea this run was going to be my new high because it started out (and, for the most part, remained) behind my usual pace. I was lagging way behind right from the first bell ring. I got everything I wanted except the red 10 and the three dwarf bulborbs over on the peninsula by the fiery blowhog. I also only pulled in seven frogs because the proposed eighth frog I spoke of a couple days ago is going to be more difficult than I assumed. Two Pikmin died mysteriously. Worst of all, the two frogs I need to drop blues both dropped yellows. So it could have been a 559 but I'm not particularly upset with what I got.

Nai, 328 is enough to make the Forest Navel top 15. I sure hope you didn't actually get 328 and were merely speculating because that score will kick TomatoMan off the list. : (

Mike, I hate the enemies on Forest of Hope. They're a pain and I was reluctant to play the level for a long time because of them. Just keep at it and you'll get the hang of it in no time. The good news is that you can waste a little time in the FoH and still manage a great score whereas in the FN you cannot afford the tiniest bit of dawdling.

Where is everybody? Am I the only one insane enough to keep playing this game?? C'mon, guys! Show me some scores.

Posted by TomatoMan - 11/9/2002 11:51:46 PM

I'm still cracking my head on FoH, Nathan. Seems I'm just getting worse. And if someone's pushed me off the high score list on FN, I'll have to switch to that dammit! :) I may never get another top score, but I refuse to fall off any of the lists. I've got to salvage SOME dignity around here.

I don't understand how anybody fights on DS without titanic losses. I played it the other night and I lost at least one on every single frog - phantom deaths all, no squeal, no ghost, what looks like a clean kill and then a mysterious decrement of the counter. And I don't think I've ever killed a puffstool without at least one phantom death. And I whistle them away the split-second the thing dies, jamming the C-stick in the opposite direction. No idea what else I could be doing that I'm not.

Watching Ferret's 569, it's terrifying to see him take on frogs with 30 pikmin and beat them without losses. Yeesh.

You're right I did not get 328, but 327, I remember wrongly...

Anyway, I have improved it to 359 with a new strat by myself =P I shall work on it, I can make another 10 Pikmins I think (still far from top spot, but I don't care much, I just want to get decent scores ;)

Rob, unfortunately with the recent "rush" of scores on Forest Navel (hey, two scores is considered a rush when things are this slow) you will need to reach 320 to get on the Top 15. Nai's 359 moved him into 10th place and kicked TomatoMan off the board.....but Tomato threw together a 320 to revenge himself. Thus, Ahlyis is the victim this time. Ahlyis, are you going to take that? Let's see some competition between you and Tomato. You should both try to secure a higher spot so that you don't run the risk of being booted in the future! But anyhow, the score needed to crack the FN Top 15 used to be 312 and is now 320. I'd say that all three of you guys (Rob, TomatoMan and Ahlyis) are fully capable of at least breaking 350, a lot more if you have a lot of time to play.

Tomato, I sent the video out today. Sorry it took so long. I can be a bit of a procrastinator, especially when dealing with the post office. Expect to receive it on Thursday or Friday at the latest.

That's all for now.

Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 11/11/2002 12:55:53 PM

Crap, crap, crap, crap, crappity crappity crappy crap crap crapclowns!

I composed that last post just before leaving for the post office to mail the tape. And damned if it isn't friggin' Veteran's Day! Well, I suppose I can't argue that war veterans are a bit more important than Pikmin scores in the grand scheme of things. But it's still annoying. So it looks as if I lied, Tomato. I'll have to mail it out tomorrow. I hope November 12 isn't "International Wet Nurse Appreciation Day" or "San Diego Chicken Remembrance Day" or something.

No worries, Nathan. :) It arrives when it arrives.

Mailed out the videotape today. Had to wait in line for about 20 minutes. I hate the post office.

I'm a bit disappointed to see this board suffering. I guess the buttload of new games that have been coming out has pulled everyone away from Pikmin. Frankly, I think I need to find a new game to get into. Eternal Darkness was great but pales in comparison to Pikmin when it comes to replay value. You can play ED three times to get the best ending and then there's nothing left to do. Great game, though....I highly recommend it to anyone who might've overlooked or underestimated it. Metroid Prime will be out soon. Maybe that will be my new addiction.

Posted by robluvsnic - 11/12/2002 11:39:09 PM

I know what you mean Nathan. I check this board every weekday, but there's not much action. And I can hardly point any fingers because I've played Pikmin only once since SMS came out. With MarioParty4 hitting the shelves soon (in Australia at any rate), it's hard to imagine me getting much of a chance to return to what is still (for me) the best release on the cube so far.

Posted by TomatoMan - 11/13/2002 1:55:39 AM

Heh - I'm playing, I'm just not getting any better. My scores are going down. Anybody want to race back to total sucktitude?

Honestly, I could just about give away all my other games. I got Mario a while back, and sure, it's great, but I'm only about 1/4 through and I turned back to Pikmin recently and haven't missed Mario yet. I'm sure I'll go there eventually, but there's so much left to do on Pikmin and I enjoy the challenge so much... Pikmin hasn't really stormed the masses like Mario did, but it sure works for me. You almost get the feeling that this was a quickie for Myamoto, just something to toss out as an idea to play with between Marios, but it just seems to resonate with most everything I love about games.

I'll admit, I do wish the effin' GameShark would come out - it's been "right around the corner" for almost a year now - because I dearly want to play without the clock. Still, though, I think the game is a masterpiece.

On a different note altogether, I didn't play tonight because I was glued to the Extended Edition of the Fellowship of the Ring. If you liked the theatrical release, GET THE EXTENDED RELEASE. Everything that was good, there's more of, and some parts that were rushed before now have plenty of time to breathe comfortably. It's a masterpiece - and I'm a lifelong fan. I read LotR for the first time at age 9 and I've (therefore) been waiting over 25 years for these movies. My massive expectations and hopes weren't disappointed in the slightest. I still can't believe it.

I'm in the same boat. I've been playing but nothing noteworthy to report yet. Still struggling to figure out my way around Forest of Hope in challenge mode and frustratingly enough I *always* forget to kill an enemy or two which results in a loss of a few pikmin.

TomatoMan - Picked the extended version of LOTR up yesterday. Watched it as soon as I got home. Absolutely brilliant. I found it a little odd at first because I personally liked the beginning with 'the Fellowship of the Ring' title appearing while Frodo is in the meadow... nevertheless absolutely stunning and added to each character I think, raher than skimming over their personalities. Looking forward to seeing the other discs in the box. :)

Posted by Ahlyis - 11/13/2002 10:09:19 AM

I'll have to get the Extended Version for Tom Bombadil if nothing else, but I haven't picked it up yet.

I'll take another stab at Forest Navel at some point, but I'm sidetracked by a game not even I would have expected... Nascar Thunder 2002 (that's right 2002, not the new 2003 version). I hate the 2003 version, but can't seem to stop playing the 2002 version on my Xbox. But I'll try to put it aside and put myself back onto the FN scoreboard sometime fairly soon.

Ahlyis - just a note. Tom Bombadil isn't in the extended version either - although he's mentioned in one of the extras about moving from book to screenplay, and why they decided to omit him.

There's so much more of everything else, though... I just can't go on enough about it. I woke up happy and ready to watch it again. The film is just much richer and more textured and less rushed. You get more of everything that was good, and some of the new stuff is on the dark side, which adds to its depth... it's not quite as smooth and ethereal as the theatrical release, there's more conflict and strife within the party, which reflects the books well and holds up the overall theme of the work, which I think is about how people handle themselves under extreme duress when there's no hope. Just brilliant.

yesterday morning, my top score on forest of hope was 408, a score achieved back in june and unbeaten since. but yesterday afternoon, i had three goes of pikmin which i changed my strat around and i have never had such an improvement before.

1st go- i was much quicker than usual and very few deaths in the game and i got 478, a jump of 70!

2nd go- even faster than before, hardly any deaths and a score of 506, a further improvement of 28!

3rd go- unbelievably fast, no deaths at all and everything was going super, but suddenly, right near the end, while collecting pikmin from base to get the last few corpses, i noticed 3 sprouts in the ground, but i had no deaths, then i realised i had had 3 mysterious deaths. well i carried on and just got everything back, for a score of:

Forest of hope-566

a total improvement of 158 pikmin in just 3 goes!!!!

Mike, you're on a tear. Looks like you're going to have that 569 in no time....and the elusive four "perfect" scores along with it. Congratulations on your rapid progress through the level! An improvement of over 100 in three friggin' tries? That's amazing. I've had improvements of maybe 70-80 in three tries in the past, but you're breaking new ground with your recent work.

I should be scared of you because right now I am the only one with four top scores and you are encroaching on this hallowed turf of mine. But I'm not scared....quite the opposite, really. I want you to finish FoH as soon as possible and join me in my Wollywog-induced stupor on the Distant Spring. I need someone to put the heat on me. I don't like being comfortable much. I think you're the man for the job.

Anyway, beautiful work. Keep it up. Nai, nice work on Forest Navel.

Tom Bombadil is the Bombbadil. How could they leave him out? I want him to sing some silly little chanties at my funeral some day.

Mike, that is huge! HUGE! An improvement of more than 100 over three tries?? Incredible!

Just thought I'd drop in and make a couple of notes.

I was going to compile the leader board again but realized there are only four new scores:

Forest of Hope - 566 (Mikepharvey)
Forest Navel - 377 (Nai)
Forest Navel - 320 (TomatoMan)
Distant Spring - 553 (Nathan)

I think we need a few more scores before we update again. I decided to list these so updating will be easier later.

One thing I recently noticed is how close TomatoMan and Ahlyis are to each other in total score. There is only one point separating them (it belongs to Tomato). Cocoapuffs999 is also edging out Snapdragon by a single point. We've got some real barn-burners going here!

That's all for now.

Posted by Ahlyis - 11/14/2002 3:31:50 PM

bwahahaha. That's pretty funny! What a barnburner ... if the barn is coated in fire retardant to keep it from blazing out of control! lol

Don't take that wrong Nathan. I just found it funny since neither Tomatoman nor myself have posted many scores recently! :-)

BTW: The auto-censor is complaining about the word retardant as being a possible TOS violation! lol

Perhaps "barn-burner" was a bit of an exaggeration. I was hoping the statement might act as kindling under the foundation of said barn. I was hoping you would read it and say, "Damn, Tomato is ahead of me by a point. I can pull ahead of him quick," and then go and get yourself a new score. Then Tomato would say, "Damn, Ahlyis just pulled ahead of me a little....I'll go get my lead back." Then you would said, "Damn, Tomato pulled ahead of me again...." And so on and so forth until the friggin' barn becomes a raging bonfire.

But noooooooo! Heh, I guess it was a rather amateur scheme but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Grenade, nice work reaching the elusive 560 plateau on Forest of Hope. At the center of the plateau, however, is a little boulder worth nine points. Come stand on the boulder with us. There's room.

Ok so I finally gave Final Trial a go. To be seriously honest, I haven't even touched the level since I bought the game over a year ago. after 3 tries I ended up with a 251 to at least make my name on the leader board for every level now. Thank god, cause I'm sure as heck not going anywhere on the other levels, but just a quick update

Well, I couldn't help but update the list. And I figured I'd make a few comments on it now in my often futile attempts to boost morale around here.

I'd like to hear what you guys think of extending the lists to 20. If you look at the list on Tomato's first post on this thread and compare it to the new one you'll notice that the minimum score needed to make each list has improved formidably. Then again, there are very few new faces popping in here lately. Pikmin is on its last legs now with the recent surge of new (and big) titles coming out. My vote would be against extending the lists. It is not going to do anyone any good and there really are no new people to look out for.

Some big names are filling out the "Honorable Mention" section. Ferret, Stein, Ahlyis and Xel23 are all recent casualties. I know that all four of these guys are perfectly capable of putting themselves back on the lists.

Rob, any progress on Forest Navel?

Nai, nice work muscling into the Forest Navel and Distant Spring leader boards.

Grenade Guzzler, aaaargh! Your post was just a couple of minutes late or I would have gotten that new FN score on the board. Great job, though! That's one new score already in the queue!

Nice job, Nathan. Believe me, I'm playing, I'm just not getting anywhere! :)

Just for fun, I added up some combined scores of a few folks, just to see what they'd come out to. I didn't do everybody. Maybe it would be fun to track this in a seperate category. or not. Whatever. Anyway:

Nathan: 2151
Rogue: 2108
Cocoapuffs999: 2097
SnapDragon: 2096
(Mike and Stein aren't on the Distant Springs list?)
(big gap here)
TomatoMan: 1831
Ahlyis: 1829 (I think - 312 on FN?)
(etc...)

This is just adding up all five scores - I just did it for the ones that leapt out at me being on all five lists. If you all add up your scores, what do you get?

TM, about to be cubeless for a couple of weeks again

Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 11/16/2002 4:30:56 PM

To fill in the gaps a little:

JimiThingR - 2000
Ferret5317 - 1988 (his FoH 469 just got booted)
SuperStein - 1918 (his DS 382 just got booted)
Ahlyis - 1830 (he has a 313 on FN, not a 312)
Xel23 - 1734 (his FT 214 got booted on the last list)

These names plus the ones Tomato posted are the only ones I know all the scores for. Mike would be way up there too but has not reported a Distant Spring score at all (that I am aware of).

Okay, I was all ready to give up entirely when about 10 tries on Forest Navel (using varying strategies) and 4 or 5 attempts at Distant Spring all failed to improve (or even get close to) my previous bests. Then, at last, by some sheer fluke, or on account of an anomoly in the time limit (and who denies that sometimes the day, and especially the countdown, goes much faster than others?), I finally broke my FN record:

FN -- 331

I have been unable to repeat that success though.

And here is a new record, I'm fairly certain: 9 mysterious deaths in the one attack! This is no joke: 100 pikmin against a puffstool, a completely clean attack, but only 91 return.

I really think we should extend the list to twenty, It'll give me a shot at the high score list to :) Now, here is the ARG I HATE MYSTERYOUS DEATHS score of the day:

It's a game of inches... inches...

Forest of Hope - 548

I feel like I'm close to getting it, but still have to shave a few seconds off in a handful of places.

On another note, it's almost time for a fourth Challenge Mode topic! Who's going to create it? Given his recent extraordinary success and effort, and stature from the Early Days (tm), I nominate Nathan.

I WILL remember to back up this thread before it disappears, like I forgot to do with the second. I have the original thread backed up still.

Looks like we've got a little bit of action going again. Already there have been five or six new scores. Good to see - nice work, guys.

Tomato, a couple of things. First, I figure that tape will be making it to your mailbox today. I sent it out Tuesday. Next, I really want a a copy of that first Challenge Mode thread archive. If you still have my e-mail address send it my way. Lastly, I don't really know who should get the honor of starting the fourth installment of this fine topic. Who's done it so far? Was it Snapdragon twice and yourself once? If so, I'd have to say it's Ahlyis's turn because he was more loyal to the board than me over the summer. I just came back in September.

I've been playing SMB2 lately but I gave it back to the friend who lent it to me. Great game and I still have a lot to do in it (Advanced and Expert Challenge Modes mainly). The new party games are rather lame, though. I'll borrow it again later. Maybe I'll start back up on the Distant Spring and shoot for 560.

Nice work to everybody on the new scores.

I vote for expanding to a top 20, and urge everyone to post their scores whether they're in the top 15 or not. That's what we're here for.

Not much space left...

I will start the new one if that's what people want. I'll try to do as good of a job as Tomatoman did with this one... and I have a plan to introduce a new top 15 list to the 5 we already have. :-)

I'm putting together the new topic right now. It'll be up in a few minutes.

So sad to see this thread go. It's possibly the last instalment in which I might actually hold positions in the top 15. :-P
