GameFAQs archives

These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

OK, I'm a little behind, but I just ripped Rogue7's 442 on FN, and am in the process of encoding it and then I'll upload it to Ahylis. It'll take 4-5 hours before it's all done and uploaded.

I only watched a snippet of it, but I did see the end, and let's just say this is about the closest ending you can get! The last 20 gets sucked up right as the screen goes blank. But it counts!

Look for it soon,

TM

The FN vids are ripped and compressed and on their way up to Ahlyis's server now. The hi-res version is about 225 megs, lo-res is about 81 megs.

Enjoy,

Success!

The Final Trial:
299

Finally I cleared the entire area!
Picture:
http://ftp.home.no/mariokart/pics/

You have to select the finaltrial-299.jpg pic... didn't work otherwise.

I know the picture is kinda blury (probably cuz I was shaking of joy), and I know you can't see the bottom of the 2 nines, but that's because i took the picture while it was highlighted... you know what i mean.

And I have done an interesting discovery:
When I was going for that blasted Snagret i did this. Dismissed my pikmin far away (not too far) and went as olimar to wake it up. As soon as it rose up I ran away, so it DID NOT snap at me with its beak. Went to go get my pikmin and I c-sticked them over him. The peculiar thing was that EVERY time he didn't snap at me when i woke him up (first time) he rose slowly up from the ground. Did it 4/5 times, don't know if it only was a coincidence, but if it wasn't I think I'v found a good reliable way of killing that sucker.

And btw: YEYYYY!!! I've now got 2 #1 scores!! YEYYYY!

WoW

IMPACT SITE 278!!!

(just sent picture to TomatoMan)
My heart is still pounding. I am finally done with impact site and will never play it again. I am now moving on to forest of hope.

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/14/2002 9:45:40 AM

Congrats to Cocoapuffs for the third 278! I'm just amazed by the scores people are coming up with recently. Wow!

Here's his pic, converted to JPG. Good enough for me!

<http://tomatoman.net/pikmin/dsc_188.jpg>

Congrats again, man!

And to Stein for his 299! That's two perfectos for you. Now you've got to do FoH and you'll have the three-fer.

Maybe that's the new goal? Perfect scores on IS, FoH and FT? Stein's in the best position for that at this point. I had been holding off on watching the vids (even though I've been creating them) because I was holding out some strange hope that I'd figure out perfect methods on my own, but I guess it's time to admit that that's not going to happen.

/me contemplates another round of serious Pikmin'ing... groan... :)

FoH is the next yes, gotta have the 569 there.. but I've discovered a differnce here. You know the 10'blue on the plateau... near three pellet possys, well.. SnapDragon threw his pikmin right up there... but my pikmin just falls asleep there, they can't be thrown long enough with out doing it with speed.....

And I hope for a new top 15 Update soon... and poor SnapDragon, he's now all the way down at a 4th place on IS! *sobs*

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/14/2002 12:01:40 PM

Well, I'm hardly one to be giving advice on FoH (although I guess it's my second-best to date), but I can tell you this: the blue 10 on the ledge has always been one of the first things I do, with my initial 42. I go out and smack the dwarf thingies and take down the flowers, and then go over to the base of the ledge with 14 yellows. If you wiggle both joysticks simultaneously while throwing, they go plenty far enough to get ten on the pellet, and the others will join once it's moving. It takes a little practice but you'll get it. Then whistle them when they're down and bring in the blues to bring it back.

Of course, low-500s is the best I've done with my strategies, so take it with a grain of salt, but that blue has never been a problem for me.

Posted by SuperStein - 9/14/2002 12:07:20 PM

Spitze! (german for 'great')!

LOL! Thanks man, but I have to say one thing... you know you said that I had the best oppurtunities for three perfectoes? Well... I'll have to say that actually Snap is the one with the best oppurtunities... he only lacks one lousy 5'blue.... btw.. thanks again for the advice..

Still pretty pathetic, but whatever:

Distant Spring: 398

Posted by SuperStein - 9/15/2002 2:38:29 PM

And we're on to Forest of Hope, my high score is 473, but my best with Snaps technique is 399, only tried it 2 times, need to practice on killing borbs n' bears with bombs!

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/15/2002 10:18:56 PM

Really painful 381 on Ds - would have been my high score by over 30 with 4 more seconds. I had the third pearl on the way back, but realized that it had six slow pikmins on it rather than six flowers. I didn't have enough time to change it around. Cost me 50. :P I'm sure the flowers would have gotten it back in time.

Ferret's got nothing to fear from me. I played one round earlier today that was going reasonably well until I slipped with a thrown pikmin setting up for a frog, who landed and stunned me and squashed 40 of my pikmin. He then jumped again immediately and I couldn't react yet, and he squashed 40 more. 100 to 20 in two seconds. Just incredible. :(

A very good weekend for me, four new highs:

IS - 264

This level is very hard for me. I completely ignore the beetle and still struggle. This run a bunch of pellets got in just as time expired.

FoH - 513

I'd been stuck in the 490's for awhile, but changed my strat a little to grab a bullborb at the end that I had been leaving. Nice to finally break 500.

DS - 476

Nothing really special about this one except I had very few losses and two of the three frogs I killed dropped blue 5's.

FT - 299!!!

Hard to get overly excited about this seeing as I could not catch SuperStein (congrats, man!) and I basicly just followed Ahlyis' walkthrough (thanks, Ahlyis!). After runs of 295 and 298 that finished very early in the countdown, I beat BLL and the snagret with no losses, so I was very careful at the end. The result was everything just barely got in, but they counted and I can retire from this level too.

Congrats to cocopuffs also on 278, nice work!

TomatoMan, all the more reason to start playing hardcore again...

Also, I might have found some evidence that 442 is a perfect score for FN. I noticed that on the final screen where the onions fly up and the counter ticks up your score, there was a red sun on the horizon when I got 442. The only other time I have seen this is when I got 299 on FT, a known perfect. TomatoMan, maybe you can help with this seeing as you have tapes at your disposal of known perfects. Does the sun show up on those? If so, I think that makes a case for 442. The only thing would be if you got a sun for a 273 IS, then it might signal just a very high score, not necessarily a perfect score. If anyone can confirm this, please let me know...

Congrats Rouge7, nicely done. I need to get some practice on the bomb-killing on Forest of Hope, then I can take my score over 500! yEaH!

And once again Ahlyis; thanks!

hey people, Im back !!! how Is everyone? I am currently playing Monkey Ball 2 so I will probably be In those rooms. How's It goin Ferret? no I am not grounded (thank god), and yes I am still playing yahoo chess. =) C ya

Posted by SnapDragon - 9/16/2002 8:32:22 PM

TomatoMan: Thanks for your kind words, but I guess you're being a bit over-effusive. Ahlyis is a bit more forthright. :) I didn't get 569 THAT long ago... what was it, May? I had 563 or something for a long time, but topoftheclass forced me to go back and finally get the perfect score. Maybe I was a bit rusty by then. Hehe.

By the way, I DO have a captured copy of my 569 (and FN 439), you know... it's the same size and quality as my old 563 video. Do you want it, or are your videos better? If so, just tell me where to upload it.

Ahlyis: Heh, you're probably right about my sorting skills. But you're definitely speaking from ignorance about a few things. It's hard to judge how difficult an accomplishment is from watching a video; you should probably assume that I know what I'm doing unless proven otherwise. :) You keep on emphasizing that I "waste time", but you fail to realize that time was unimportant for me, and readily sacrificed to improve RELIABILITY. When you're just getting good at the level, your concern is to grab everything in time. When you want to master the level, you need to add a layer of safety on top of that!

Hurling Pikmin at dwarf bugs is *intentional* - it's to prevent Pikmin from vanishing mysteriously (and that's why I call my Pikmin back as the bugs fall). If you're swarming dwarf bugs, it's not uncommon to have a Pikmin disappear (which you've been complaining about). As you noted, this costs time, which I had to make up elsewhere. It's all part of the challenge of getting a perfect run. I did almost every battle slower than I "could", but going faster increases the risk. Come on, did you really think I didn't know about swarming? That I wouldn't use it if I could? It's HARDER to kill dwarf bugs by hurling, not easier!

Getting perfect in FoH is nothing like getting perfect in FT. FT has 3, maybe 4 difficult locations where you can lose Pikmin, and you can coast through the rest. FoH has no difficult locations, but is FULL of "simple" spots where you can very easily lose a Pikmin (even through no fault of your own). You need to adjust your psychology to this, and consciously slow yourself down. Don't attack Bulborbs until you're more than ready for them. Don't trust that you'll pick bomb-carriers out of your large group, because for the bomb trick to work, you MUST throw all three in quick succession (try it and you'll see) - and if you fail, there's no way to recover. You don't want to risk a yellow getting mixed up with them. You simply assumed that I wasn't good enough to pick bomb carriers out of my group... and didn't wonder if I had a reason. Hmph.

Despite all that, it wasn't quite the cold, calculated, precision run I could hope for. :) I got careless near the end... I don't know if you noticed, but I was a fraction of a second from getting munched on the last Bulborb. And I do seem to remember screwing around with that last Pearl a bit. Hehe.

Posted by SnapDragon - 9/16/2002 8:46:57 PM

SuperStein: That Blue 10 up on the ledge... that's not a difference with your game, just a strategy point. When the Pikmin carry the Bulbear from behind it, they push the Blue 10 a little closer to the ledge. So when I return to pick it up near the end, I don't have to run and hurl Pikmin.

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/16/2002 8:55:16 PM

Hey Snap, glad to see you poking your head in still. :) Your modesty is admirable, but from where I sit, you're the champ and we're all playing for second. If you had kept playing as long as the rest of us have, you'd be trying for a one-handed perfect score on DS by now. :)

A relatively minor triumph, but still one I'm happy with:

Distant Spring - 449

Had that rarest of occurrences: a big jump. This beat my previous high by 51. That's a rare thing these days! Finally got all 3 pearls, just barely. I also lost about 25-30 fighting frogs. Maybe I could start to push 500 by honing my frog-fighting skillz.

We're just waiting for Ferret's tape and then I'll be able to start getting the DVD together. Unless you can beat his 582 on DS and tape it for me? :)

TM

Posted by Rouge7 - 9/17/2002 8:31:10 AM

New high:

DS - 496

At one point I set a goal for myself to be over 250 on IS and FT, 500 on FH and DS and 400 on FN. It had a nice symmetry to 250-500-400-500-250. Well, here I am missing only 500 on DS and pull a 496... so close.

Hard to complain about this, really. I killed three frogs with a total of 4 losses and one of them had a blue 5. I guess I just have to keep going.

TomatoMan, frogs have helped me a great deal. I used to kill just the one because I couldn't beat them without big losses. The difference is now when I whistle the pikmin back when they jump I also c-stick them away, before I just whistled. This helped a ton...

Posted by SuperStein - 9/17/2002 8:49:41 AM

SnapDragon:
I found out that thing about the Blue 10, saw it when i watched my pikmin carry the carcass. Pretty nifty I must say!

And I have a question, you said there were more elements of danger in The Final Trial than in Forest of Hope. But which level is the hardest one to get a perfect score on, I've managed both Impact Site (theoretically) and the Final Trial if you didn't know!

And one tip:
On the wollywogs, when they're gonna do their BIG jump.. you can like see that they take a little extra time preparing the jump (i think?).
BTW, SNAGRETS!! DARN!! Have no1 tested my theory yet?

Posted by Rouge7 - 9/17/2002 9:13:29 AM

SuperStein, I've only tested your theory once and the snagret came up fast, but the next time he came up it was slow. Has anyone noticed the red sun that I talked about a few posts back?
---
R7

Posted by SnapDragon - 9/17/2002 10:01:37 AM

A red sun? Weird, I've never noticed one of those.

TomatoMan: Heh, the only way I could imagine beating Ferret's score is by watching his video and copying his strat. The one I came up with doesn't come anywhere near that! The huge, huge gap between 1st and 2nd on that level shows just how brilliant Ferret's strategy is. The biggest gap on any other level is 3 points!

I'm impressed at how much activity there still is around here. Challenge Mode may only have 5 levels, but it certainly has staying power! I guess the influx of Europeans also helps. I wonder if some new people will end up finding even better FN/DS strats?

SuperStein: Here's my opinion. The easiest level to max out is FT: absolutely no time issues, and just a few nasty sections to practice. The next easiest is perhaps IS... it wouldn't be so bad except for the flint beetle, which takes a lot of patience and persistence (more than I have :). FoH is much harder, since it's a long level full of battles. FN comes next (if it's even possible, which seems doubtful at this point)... Rouge is 40 points off of perfect and I doubt she has ANY time to spare for another couple of VERY distant 20s. Finally, it's trivial to see that DS can and will never be perfected.

Thx Snap! and DOH! Hard levels left I tell ya.....

Downloadin FN - 442 as we speak :P
181 MB and countin'!

BTW, RED SUN? WHAAAAAAT! Where?

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/17/2002 10:36:14 AM

Hurling Pikmin at dwarf bugs is *intentional* - it's to prevent Pikmin from vanishing mysteriously (and that's why I call my Pikmin back as the bugs fall). If you're swarming dwarf bugs, it's not uncommon to have a Pikmin disappear (which you've been complaining about).

Actually, I have NEVER lost a Pikmin mysteriously to a Dwarf bear or borb. I've swarmed with 100 Pikmin and never lost one to a Dwarf. That's why I commented on that. I can understand not wanting to risk a swarm on a full size bear or borb. I just don't see the point for the Dwarfs.

I agree that it's slightly harder against borbs and more so against bears since they like to charge you more, but I don't really think that's much concern anyway. I still maintain that swarming Dwarfs is perfectly safe. It adds nothing to the risk factor. No magical deaths have I ever seen from Dwarf swarming.

On the other hand, I do understand about going faster increasing the risk against full grown borbs and bears. Even so, with my current pattern, there are only 2 borbs and 2 bears which are swarm bait. The others are either bomb bait or get rained on early when you don't have enough to swarm yet. Of those, I swarm the 2 borbs and the bear by the red 10. I still rain on the bear by the blue 10. The risk against 2 borbs and one bear is satisfactory to me. I only rarely lose a Pikmin mysteriously to any of them when I have 90+ Pikmin.

Agreed. FT is definitely simpler than FoH as far as figuring out what to do and how to do it in time. But I disagree in degree of the number of 'simple' spots to worry about in FoH. I don't consider Dwarfs risky at all. Other than them, only the full size borbs and bears are left (clam clamps aren't risky at all with bombs). The hardest thing about FoH is figuring out the pattern. I give you full credit for having done so long before anyone else even came close.

Hmph.

Not at all. I have tried it and I do understand. Against the Bears I fully agree, you need to have the bombs ready and uninterruptable. But against the bears or the ClamClamps, this isn't so.

I just watched the video again to be sure. In the area of the pearl, bear and 2 borbs, you really are quite inefficient. I'm sorry if you hate criticism, but I know if you watch your video again with an honest eye you will have to admit that that section was pretty sloppy. It doesn't matter since you end up with the perfect anyway. I simply said that I wasn't that impressed with some areas of the video. This was certainly one of those areas.

I think you're an awesome player. You accomplished many things which set the bar for all to come. But to say that your video was awe inspiring and perfect, well, to be honest, TomatoMan's IS video is much more impressive to me, sorry.

Number 1, I am a big, burly man who eats lightning and craps thunder. I misspelled my screen name when signing up, I actually wanted Rogue7 because I greatly enjoy Rogue Squadron for N64 and Rogue Leader. I only now realize that rouge is some sort of makeup and might cause people to think that I am female. Imagine my horror... I could close this account, but don't like the prospect of starting over karma-wise.

The red sun I am referring to I saw at the analysis screen of my 442 FN and 299 FT runs, where the onions fly away and you see your score. I would like it if anyone who has a known perfect on tape could just check the end and see if the sun is there. It's on the horizon and it pans out with the rest, so you only see it right at the start of the counter going up...

On the sun thing: there's no sun at all on Snap's perfect 569. There isn't one on my IS run either. I don't think it's anything more than a background artifact.

Sorry, haven't done so..
But the hi-res one worked flawlessly

YEYY! I'll just need to get a grip on Distant Spring now and I'll have 5 secure Top 15 places!

Ahlyis: Yes, as I said, I admit I was slow and careless in the final pearl+Bulbear area. I was happy with the rest of the run, but apparently you're not. Fair enough.

However, I'm surprised you haven't noticed that you mysteriously lose Pikmin to dwarf bugs. Since I'm considerably more experienced than you in this area - and have even had 569 runs ruined by it - you, to put it tactlessly, don't know what you're talking about. (In fact, if you still have my ancient 563 video around, I lose a Pikmin that way there) You can (and do :) criticize my technique, but until you have 569 yourself, don't claim that parts of my *strategy* are useless without good reason. That's just foolish arrogance.

Ok Snap, you're right. You are God and I am a newbie know-nothing.

I haven't been here CONSTANTLY for the past 5 months, playing all the while. I haven't done the 9DC, then the no-deaths challenge, then the 11 Day - 50 Pikmin Total Challenge, then the 9DC-no deaths. And I haven't done any playing of Challenge Mode and put up my own reasonably good high scores. I have NO experience against anything in the game, including Dwarfs. I'm just a newbie posting random criticisms with no skill to back me up.

I have fought Dwarfs probably over a thousand times without ever having noticed a mysterious death from them. and believe me, I notice mysterious deaths ALL THE TIME against frogs and some other creatures. But I have NEVER noticed a death against Dwarfs. Does this mean I don't think it can happen? Of course not! But I find it extremely hard to believe that the odds are anywhere close to noticeable enough to justify raining instead of swarming. There isn't enough safety gained to justify the time lost. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. you are entitled to disagree, but you don't have to be such a jerk about it. Honestly, to call me foolish and arrogant, and claim "you, to put it tactlessly, don't know what you're talking about" shows a complete disrespect towards me. You even say "I'm considerably more experienced than you in this area". You MAY have more experience than me, but I SERIOUSLY doubt it is "considerably more". How long has it been since you really played a lot. I'm STILL playing almost daily. Don't confuse raw talent with experience! I think it fairly obvious that you have more raw talent than I at Pikmin. But this really is an experience issue and I doubt you outstrip me by much if at all there!

I'm sorry you can't take criticism well, but that's hardly my fault. There ARE some flaws in your run. Does that make it less than perfect? No. Does that make you any less of a great player? No. Does that mean I shouldn't have said anything or voiced MY opinion? Apparently you think so.

This truly is sad. I used to have a lot of respect for you Snap. I even agreed with you way back when someone ripped off your pattern and then submitted their score to NP (or wherever). At the time, I knew you were right, but thought you were maybe reacting a bit strong. Justifiable in that case I felt and thought no more of it. but now, I think back and compare that tirade with this one and am left to wonder if you simply need to grow up some!

Really, you are FAR too defensive. Why is it such a big deal to you that your video wasn't awe inspiring to me? Why is it such a problem to admit that something you did might be less than 'perfect' in someone else's eyes?

I think the FN-lo is broken. Just get the hi-res one.

Ok Snap, maybe I'm overreacting too. But my original criticism was directed at your video. I was not criticizing you Snap. But you chose to make this personal. You basically called me a no-talent newbie who should shut up and let their betters be because he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. I found that highly insulting, as I think most people here would.

Forest Navel - 400

I have to admit, I'm surprised to return to the board half a year after my last post and see the scores on Forest Navel. Here I was thinking that my 400 would be second only to Snap. But there is a new FN Guru?!? Rouge, I commend ye! Forest Navel is by far the trickiest level in Challenge Mode. I never figured anyone would come even close to surpassing Snap's 439. Unbelievable. Well, I'm happy knowing that I am in elite company as a member of the FN 400 Club. I'm not sure if I'll be playing much Pikmin in the near future, but if I do I'll probably try for the Impact Site 278 or the Forest of Hope 569. Dunno yet. This game never dies. It's the only one in my GameCube collection that I actually play a lot.

Yeah, so I'm back. I should never have taken such an extended hiatus in the first place. "I see a lot of new faces here. That means someone is breaking the first rule of Pikmin Club: NEVER talk about Pikmin Club!" Hehe, just kidding. The more the merrier. But I do almost feel like a stranger even though I once was regarded as a Pikmin Guru back when this game first came out. Okay, I have to read through the gazillion posts now. Got some catching up to do.

Okay, this verification of the top 3 scores thing is a bit aggravating for me. I don't have easy access to a digital camera anymore. I guess I could borrow my sister's. Gotta say, I hope that people like Tomato, Ferret, Snap, Ahlyis, redpic, topotheclass and JimiThingR can vouch for my honesty. I proved my scores with photographs a bunch of times back when the first Challenge Modes board was brand new. It seems silly to have to prove my worthiness. But if I do get a score that seems absurdly good, I'll go to the trouble of verifying it. But in the case of a little 400 on Forest Navel I think I'll throw myself at the mercy of the court.

By the way, a thanks is due to whoever made the decision to extend the lists. Top 5 lists were becoming a bit elitist.

My new FOH record... 556! That's 1 more Pikmin than my previous record!

I managed to get no deaths this time, since my 555 run included one yellow making a false move and getting killed by its own bomb-rock explosion.

Forest Navel - 405

Woo! I'm in business! I got this score on the very next attempt after my 400. Can anyone remember what the highest possible score for this level is? I don't mean the highest achievable score.....such is debatable.....I mean the maximum for the level. From what I remember, I only missed two yellow 20's, a blue 20, a blue 10 and a blue 1. The blue 1 was just outside the onion when time expired. That would make the maximum score 477. I don't remember if this is correct or not. It's been a long time since Ferret and I wasted hour upon hour of our miserable lives dissecting this level. Right now, I can foresee myself working one extra 10 or 20 into my strat. It would make for a formidable score. I'm not sure if I'm wasting my time building the bridge to get the red 20 (by the big pool).
I have really improved my score by teaching myself more efficient ways of building the bridge to the pearl. Those geysers come in very handy.
I cannot believe that I tried soooo hard to get to 400 and finally did it....then topped in on my next try. I'm almost afraid to try for more. Scary, scary game.

Hey, welcome back, Nathan! Yes, this game just keeps a grip on highly intelligent and good-looking people, we're unanimous on that.

There's been a fresh wave of talented pikmin'ers giving us greybeards a real run for our money!

On the verification thing, it came about because of a couple of obvious fakes claiming high scores, even after hanging out for a bit. A photo is the best kind of evidence for any kind of claim, but I think those of us that remember you will vouch for ya. If you can't do a photo, then some kind of informed discussion about what you did and how is good enough. When Blackmage gave a five-sentence explanation for his claimed FN score, it was easy to see that he hadn't done any of it, and his description of battling sheargrubs put the nail in that coffin for me. :)

I've already had two people tie my IS score, Nathan, so I'd prefer if you'd stay the hell away! It's crowded up here as it is! :)

haw haw. Good to have you back, man, get in there and put these new whippersnapppers in their place!

Trust me, TomatoMan, I well know my place.

I'd just like it if I could keep my name in ONE of the top fifteen lists! I've got two at the moment, but I just know that I'll very soon be displaced.

If only I had more than only 2 hours a week to play Pikmin. :P
