These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

That would be a good way to do it

Posted by Rouge7 - 9/24/2002 5:08:25 PM

I would prefer to be listed as Rogue7, but it's no biggie...

I'll get a screen shot of DS 520 one of these days, last time I had to take the digital camera from work so I need an excuse to get it again. My hope was to crack the top three in FoH and kill two birds with one stone, but now that you need 568 to do that, well, I guess I better just take the pic now.

Since these challenge mode topics are becoming more popular whoever makes the next one should call it part 4. It would be weird to call it the third sequel

Posted by jakemrjr - 9/24/2002 6:58:52 PM

eeek! Looks like I need to get 264 on IS now so I don't weigh down the list. If I ever get it I will post the pics, but I'm still at 253 now.

Posted by cocoapuffs999 - 9/25/2002 6:36:31 AM

First off congrats on that 569 SuperStein. You again beat me to first. I have had a lot of homework but worked on FoH a little and my current high is this.

Forest of Hope 567

This was by far my best run ever. I finished before the countdown started. Now I have to do it with no deaths.

Posted by Mikepharvey - 9/25/2002 6:54:30 AM

thanx tomatoman for being ok about the video thing. if you check my topic "my challenge mode scores" then you shall see that i have given you credit there.

ahylis: not wanting to be picky or anything but i did get a 299 in FT but you put me down as 260 in the list. i will take a photo and when i get to uni (on sunday)i will scan it in and email it to stein. (with my 278 IS score)

my 5 scores for IS are 278, 276, 273, 273, 273 which is an average of 274.6. i think that tomatoman should be top as he achieved it first. and then in order of completion.(i got about 7 272 scores after that.)

Nathan, i appreciate your comments and as someone who uses the guides i would like to say that i always give credit and i think i should be placed behind the people who did it originally. i think though you should give due consideration to the people who arent as good at stratagies as you, tm, snap, ahylis etc and can only achive high scores with guides. to pull off perfect scores is still an extremely hard task so how you people can do it and think of the strats as well boggles the mind.

started fn and got 360 something. i will check later.

btw thanx rogue7 for answering the question about getting a 442.

Closing up cocoapuffs999!

Nice for you

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/25/2002 10:06:16 AM

Mikepharvey, I only listed you at 260 because that's all I saw reported in this thread. If you reported it in your other thread, well, I seem to recall telling you there that you needed to post your scores here for them to get added. I'm not going to search every thread looking for scores. That's why we have this thread in the first place. If you DID post it here and I just missed it, well Sorry :-)

I would like to ask people once again to post high scores in bold so that we can spot them easier when updating the lists. It's hard to spot high scores sometimes when they are hidden in a long message and are not in bold!

Bold is easy enough to add, just put "< B >" and "< / B >" without the quotes or spaces around the text you want in bold. Thank you.

Sorry Ahlyis, I actually didn't know that! But from now on i will do so, if I ever get any new high-scores!

Posted by SuperStein - 9/25/2002 1:32:41 PM

Argh! My 322 just WONT be broken !lol!
Now I got 320, but a blue 10 and a red 20 where inches from the onions, and a yellow 20 and a blue 20 wasn't far away either! hmm... need more practice I know....

Posted by GasMan - 9/25/2002 2:38:49 PM

Well, I've made a dramatic increase on Impact Site to a whopping 172. <grins> Can't believe how much of a kick I'm getting out of this.

Now, I've been having trouble with these pikmin. I can't seem to get them into any semblance of order to have the correct pikmin thrown at the correct colour of pellets. That and dismissed pikmin always tend to go and attempt to help others carrying pellets. Pretty sure it's as much my fault in placement terms rather than theirs. Just wondering if anyone had any basic tips for organisation so that the correct pikmin gets matched with his significant other, as it were. :)

Posted by Ice Man - 9/25/2002 3:08:27 PM

if you hold down A olimar will grab hold of a pikmin and all the pikmin will go in order.

and use the c stick to through faster

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/25/2002 4:32:20 PM

I really just don't get it. Impact Site is boggling my mind.

After struggling hard just to get some more 264s done, I had another freak run last night. I screwed up my pattern and ended up going after the landing area while the 3 10 pellets were coming down, but without enough Pikmin to clean it out. Instead of stopping, I continued on. I finished the rest of the level and went back to the landing site without the countdown having started. I cleaned it out and had time to go past the box after the Flint Beetle, which I had carefully not triggered earlier. But I only had reds and 2 yellows with me. I had enough time to attack the Beetle, but only got one blue 1 pellet out of him. I sent that back to the red onion, but while fighting the stupid Beetle, one of the yellows went up in flame and I couldn't reach him in time.

So, after screwing up early, I had plenty of time to correct the mistake AND go after the Beetle. Then I go and screw THAT up so I end up with a VERY unorthodox 264! lol

The saddest part is that I have no idea what I did differently to come up with so much extra time at the end!

Forest of Hope - 567

Can you guess how the two died? Fire? No. Water? No. Bulbear? No. Spotty Bulborb? No. Dwarf? No. Clam? No.

Mysterious Deaths

How horribly frustrating. It is just ridiculous to think that I did the run perfectly and a glitch in the game killed me. I call it a glitch because that's my opinion of it. Some people say that dying enemies squash your Pikmin. But since there are no Pikmin ghosts or death rattles I have to believe that mysterious deaths are glitch-related. Who knows? Who cares. A death is a death and I need to keep trying. If it happens again I will puke, though.

I finished this run with 5 seconds left on the countdown and was feeling remarkably relaxed. I probably wouldn't have been relaxed if I hadn't been aware that the mysterious deaths had occurred. I kept a close eye out for all deaths that time and watched as my number dropped two different times. I think they came on Spotty Bulborbs.

Oh well, I now join cocoapuffs in a tie for third place. I wonder if topotheclass will ever try again for perfection. He was so close! And he's had 568 for several months now.

Anyway, I'm taking the rest of the night off from Pikmin. My brain is fried.

Posted by jakemrjr - 9/25/2002 10:05:06 PM

I had a couple of disappointing runs yesterday and today trying to improve my scores. First off I was trying to improve my IS score of 253 (hoping for 264), but I could only get up to 240 after 7 tries. I figured this was just because I hadn't been playing pikmin for awhile. So I switched to Forest Navel.

I gave FN 9 tries; but I didn't even come within 20 of my high score 339. I always have the BLL lair pellets and Puffstool section pellets on their way to the onion but not in time. So I switched to Final Trial.

I finally had something good going on with Final trial. I just lost a little bit of life from attacking the Sheargrub's with Olimar, but no Pikmin had been lost. I had gotten all of the snagret's pellets and BLL's pellets without any deaths. With all of the dangerous parts out of the way I went on to get the blue 20 pellet with my blue pikmin. Well, I stopped and waited for the fire to go down and then pushed forward, but I landed on the geyser which flung Olimar into the fire; and I died thanks to the earlier Sheargrub hits. How embarrassing and frustrating.
So to sum this up... I didn't get any higher scores, and I appreciate the perfect runs even more. Especially the Forest Navel! Good job fellows.

Ice Man - Thanks very much, your help's very much appreciated. :) It's certainly made things a little easier. I just need to sort my own weaknesses out now. Again, many thanks.

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/26/2002 11:38:16 AM

On the topic of Mysterious Deaths: I played a round of Distant Spring this morning and set a new record. No, not a high score: a Simultaneous Mysterious Deaths record. I took on a frog with 100 blues and killed him easily; he didn't jump. After I beat him, I whistled my pikmins back behind me immediately so they wouldn't get crushed. As the frog fell, my count dropped from 100 to 93. No ghosts, no little "ehhh" dying-pikmin sounds, nothing visible: 7 pikmin just vanished.

Also, I don't think I've ever taken on a puffstool without losing at least one in a ghostless disappearance.

I'm wondering whether it has something to do with a shifting/falling space intersecting with a space occupied by a pikmin and a glitch in the collision-detection code, which the game resolves by "telefragging" the destination object and removing it from the game.

I was fighting the frog against a wall, so there was less room to move; I wonder if mystery deaths happen more often when there's an obstruction on the field - a wall, a root popping out of the ground. Do they happen less often in flat, unobstructed areas?

Grrr.

well.. new high

Forest Navel: 378

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/26/2002 2:25:26 PM

From what I've noticed, MDs seem to occur more with tighter packed Pikmin. If you c-stick in a tight group against a frog, for example, you have a higher chance of a MD than if you swirl around the frog.

This is not 100% true, but it does seem to happen more frequently the tighter the Pikmin are packed.

I have two new scores to post.
First 349 in Forest Navel, and then 450 In Forest of Hope.

As usual pics are at http://mrjr.tripod.com/scores.html

Posted by SuperStein - 9/26/2002 3:02:36 PM

That's a good point Ahlyis, I noticed the exact thing while I was going for the 299 on FT, that frog kept takin my Pikmin away, when he shouldn't have done so.

Aaaaaanyway!

Forest Navel: 390

would have been a 400+, but I threw only 19 pikmin at the yellow 20 in the Puffstool area. But I don't care, I'll break 400 soon :P

Have a nice gaming day guys! I'm gonna watch some telly and go to bed soon! :-)

Posted by robluvsnic - 9/26/2002 8:25:03 PM

Here's something I don't understand: why does the frog still jump sometimes, even when you swarm it with 100 pikmin? I've tried different tactics like running the group under its jump so as to swarm onto the back legs, but nothing works consistently. It seems like the jump is completely random (or at the very least, uncontrollable).

Anyway, I think I'll focus on FT for now, seeing as there's only the one frog to deal with, and I think I've mastered taking out BLL without deaths (or with only one). My first attempt at FT way back when I first started challenge mode, I got 144. My second attempt just the other night I got 172, and last night I got 186. I like the trend in those scores, so I think I'll have a few more goes over the weekend.

Please don't beat me!

Posted by Mikepharvey - 9/27/2002 3:54:17 AM

new score for me-

FOREST NAVEL- 407

also FINAL TRIAL - 299

cant do bold thing, too stupid.

on my forest navel run i had a blue 5 a red 20 and yellow 10 all on their way to their onions- would have been a 442. on a later run i got 402, but 2 blue 5s a red 20 and a yellow 10 were all right next to their onions. so frustrating!!

when killing frogs, swarm them and if they jump right away then whistle and c stick them away and your pikmin should survive. if the frog does not jump then whistle all your pikmin when frogs health is at a quater. he usually jumps, but your pikmin will be safe and no mysterious deaths 90% of the time, and the pikmin on top of the frog will finish him off before running to safety. this helped me on final trial.

New high

FoH - 530

No deaths, everything but two 'borbs and a 'bear. I could have easily gotten 542, but there were only 10 bombs when I got the ACB pearl at the end. I had already sent two carcasses back and felt the odds were slightly against my 13 pikmin versus a bullborb.

No matter at I do. I just can't clear the forest of hope with no deaths. Most are mysterious deaths. I seem to be getting more and more. I been trying for endless hours. I just can't do it. I am almost ready to give up. How on Earth did you do it SuperStein.

Posted by Phrolox - 9/27/2002 9:52:35 PM

hehe sounds like snaps worries on foh had real good basis...wid all these people getting md's :)...i personally like to take that level slower too....seems to be the worst of the lot

Posted by SuperStein - 9/28/2002 2:26:17 AM

How I did it? Hmmmm.... I swarmed 'em suckers (them little ones that is) with A LOT of flower Pikmin, and I got the hang of bomb-killing the big animals... I only got a couple of MD's when I took on some bulbears or spotty bulborbs without using bombs. I really don't know what I did to prevent MD's, I just didn't have any, lucky I guess :P

BTW, I know this isn't the right place to ask. Put this is the only place where I have 'contact' with Americans. And it is Nintendo related! I want to know if the e-reader is any good. Cus my mum is visittng the states, and since the word is that freeloader is canned, i thought i could get some equipment/games for my GBA! Well, any of you have this nifty little device?

Posted by Lewellyn - 9/29/2002 1:08:13 PM

Another slight leap:
FT - 266

What was really annoying about this was that i could easily have got 280+ but the snagret came up the wrong way 3 times and BLL left 3 yellows. However, this is not as bad as a couple of days back, when i had a perfect run, until the Snagret came up the wrong way 12 times . I was in complete disbelief.

Stein, about the GBA e-reader, the best thing to do would be to get your mom to buy you the reader, and with it comes 3 sample games i believe. Animal Crossing is coming soon, but is available in pokemon-esque $2.99 5 card random boosters, with 54 [i think] cards in the set. So i'd get the reader but wait until the actual cards become available in wherever you live [is it Norway?].

The Americans will be more informed than me so maybe they'll some more/better advice.

Forest of Hope - 569

The evil has been vanquished. A new day has dawned. The old guard is fleeing. Blah blah blah.

It was my best run yet. I finished before the countdown and was able to switch to a bird's eye view and make fireworks for a while. Unfortunately, I was not running a tape. I probably should have been, but I had recorded so many unsuccessful runs that I was too sick of messing with the VCR to bother with it. Curse my sloth! The fireworks were so neat, too!

Okay so I've got two number one scores now. Not sure where I'm going after this. Maybe I'll take a break from Pikmin for a while.

Now that I've finally gotten my 569 I feel especially bad about the opinion I expressed a couple of days ago. I was just buckling under the pressure I put on myself to achieve perfection. Again, sorry to anyone I might have offended.

I will get my photo taken sooner or later. When I do get around to it I will just take a shot of my entire scoreboard so that both my FN and FoH scores are viewable on the same shot. But in the meantime, I'll post my entire in-depth strategy for the Forest of Hope in the next post. It probably won't make for the most engaging of reading material but may prove valuable to someone. Enjoy!

Nathan's Forest of Hope Strategy

There are six stages in my tactic. Each one is fine tuned to assure a precise balance of colors. I always have 16 yellows, 42 reds and 42 blues. Yellows are virtually worthless in this level when it comes to killing enemies. I keep just enough to gather yellow pellets and blow up walls. I do not bomb any enemies. The six stages are as follows:

Stage One: Clear the base area plus the two dwarf bulborbs near the blue onion (for a total of 50).

Stage Two: Take 35 pikmin and clear out all five dwarf bulborbs, the dwarf bulbear and the three pellet posies in the bridge area. Throw four yellows onto the first bridge (a total of 81 when all the Pikmin make it back to their onions).

Stage Three: Pick all of the available sprouts for a total of 77 Pikmin (four are working on the bridge). Kill the bulborb by the water by swarming him (I always smarm bears and borbs so long as I have 50 or more Pikmin). Leave his corpse alone. Put four blues on the other bridge, 10 on the blue 10 and one on each of the blue one-pellets. Gather all 61 remaining Pikmin and take them over to the ledge with the blue 10. The first bell usually rings here. Throw all the yellows and reds over the ledge. Take the blues up the tree root and around the corner. Kill the four dwarf bulborbs by luring them over separately and raining on them with blues. Go over and call the reds and yellows. Swarm and kill the bulbear with all 61 Pikmin. Assign Pikmin to the corpses and the blue 10. Take the remaining 25 back down the ledge where the first bridge is already complete. Collect the red five and call the four bridge-building yellows. Collect the corpse of the bulborb killed earlier. Kill the two dwarf bulbears, collect them and grab the three red one-pellets by the can. Return to base.

Stage Four: Pikmin count is at 169. Pick the remaining 19 sprouts and flower all 96 Pikmin (four are working on the second bridge). Take the 96 toward the pearl area by the water. Kill the bulborb. Leave the corpse. Kill the two dwarf bulborbs. Leave the corpses. Kill the bulbear. Leave the corpse. Throw six reds and four yellows on the red 10. Bomb the gate open. Kill the three bulborbs. Kill the bulborb. Assign Pikmin to carry these four corpses and make sure to use up all yellows. Take blues and throw a bunch onto the box. The second bell usually rings here. Put 20 Pikmin onto the blue 20 making sure at least 11 are blue. The box is finished moving. Take the 47 remaining Pikmin carefully over the bridge. Swarm the bulborb to kill him. Rain on the bulbear to kill him. Flower if necessary with the nectar patch. Assign 10 blues on the bulbear, 10 reds on the bulborb. Jar the pearl loose and assign three blues to it. Jump over the ledge with the remaining 24 Pikmin and place 10 of them on the dead bulborb, 10 on the dead bulbear and four on one of the dead dwarf bulborbs. Return to base. All yellows have returned by this point along with a formidable number of reds and yellows. Take them over to the bridges and retrieve the yellow 20 with 50 Pikmin. Return to base and wait briefly for the 20 to return.

Continued on next post....

Nathan's Forest of Hope Strategy (Part II)

Stage Five: Head towards the second pearl area. Kill the three dwarf bulbears. Leave the corpses. Knock down the pellet posies and assign the proper colors to them. Throw 10 reds on the bridge and swarm the bulborb. Leave the corpse. Take the 88 remaining Pikmin over to the area with the blue and yellow five-pellets. Collect the fives. Kill the dwarf bulborb, two dwarf bulbears and the bulborb. The third bell usually rings here. Assign blues to these four corpses and assign yellows to the one-pellets. Take the 56 remaining Pikmin back to the finished bridge. Call the 10 reds and blow the wall down with yellows. Swarm the two bulborbs and the bulbear. Assign the rest of the blues to the three corpses and use reds once blues run out. Jar the pearl loose. Assign three reds to it. Take the remaining 33 Pikmin down the bridge and over to the red 20 area. Kill the dwarf bulbear and two dwarf bulborbs. Assign 10 Pikmin to the yellow 10 using up all yellows so that only reds are left. Put three reds on a dwarf bulborb. Use the remaining 20 reds for the red 20. Return to base.

Stage Six: Gather as many Pikmin from base area as are free. Head back toward the red 20 area but pick up the corpses of the three dwarf bulbears and the bulborb on the way. Turn the corner and pick up the corpses of the dwarf bulbear and the dwarf bulborb. Kill the last remaining dwarf bulbear and collect him. Knock down the pellet posies and assign the proper colors. Head down toward where the red 10 was and pick up the dead dwarf bulborb left during stage four. That's it. You're done. Just prey they get back in time and that none of your Pikmin have vanished mysteriously.

Stage Seven: Okay, so I lied. There are actually seven stages. This stage is crucial. Once you complete stage six you must do a little dance. Nothing extreme. Just a little dance. A funky little dance. Get your groove on.

I feel like the gimpy cow limping behind the stampede:

FoH - 553

One death, everything but a bullbear. I'm pretty sure my strat can get everything in, I'm not sure I can consistently clear out the pearl areas without some bomb miscue. No point giving up now...

Haven't forgotten about the screen shot I owe, just holding out hope I can verify two scores at once.

Speaking of screen shots, did cork ever post one for IS 273? I don't remember seeing it, but the asterisk was removed...

I can't believe how well you're all doing. Just amazing, all of you.

Nathan, that's a brilliant strategy. Just reading it I've found some flaws in my own (like: I also try to start out with 50 by killing the two dwarfs as part of my start routine, but I always wait until they're all sprouted and picked, and then head out with 50 and try to clear out the entire area by the water including both borbs, but the numbers are awkward...). Can't wait to try it out!

I'm personally curious whether the DS score is beatable. That level is so friggin' hard I just don't know what to do! Ferret's 582 just seems celestial to me, but that's the level that still has the most "unexplored" potential at this point.

Woo!

TM

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/30/2002 11:06:25 AM

The asterisk on Cork's score was removed because it is no longer a top 3 score.

If I update the scores, I'll Leave Stein 2nd on FoH. He achieved it first. And since we don't have any videos, we can't prove that anyone did or did not use their own strategies. Yes, Nathan's walkthrough is pretty good evidence, but I still think we should leave it in the order of completion. Trying to get into who's run is more 'worthy' is totally subjective.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Ahylis. I think whoever gets to the score first should be listed first. I'm happy so long as I see that #1 next to my name....even if it's listed third. This afternoon I'm going to figure out whether I want to go for 278 on Impact Site or finally get around to playing Final Trial. Probably the latter. I hate flint beetles and will do anything to avoid them.
Thanks for the encouragement, guys. Congratulations to cocoapuffs on his 569! Rogue (you prefer Rogue, right?), you're almost there. The roughest part of Forest of Hope is having your strat mastered and only needing to finish without deaths. I had four 567's before I finally managed to keep all Pikmin alive! Keep at it, you should have it in no time.

Okay, but I'm just saying if you guys ever will have a score system like that, I won't mind being pushed down sum!

And btw, I don't have Pikmin in my captivity anymore. A buddy has borrowed it, and I've got Sonic instead :P
Frankly I was getting kinda tired of Pikmin for the moment, but I still have a good deal of challenges to complete before I've REALLY completed Pikmin:
eg.
- 442 on Forest Navel in Challenge Mode
- A MUCH better score on Distant Spring in Challenge Mode
- 9 Day Challenge No Deaths
- Complete the game with 50 pikmin

So, when I've played sunshin a while I'll head back to Pikmin.

But I'm kinda glad I lent it away today. Here's the story:
Me and my bud thought we needed to get together and do some gaming. So I bring all of my games down to him and we boost up the cube. Well... after a good while of playing Sonic, Smash Bros. and Monkey Ball I say to him. "Wanna try Pikmin?" He's kinda skeptical but I stuff it in and give him the controller. He starts story mode 1st day. After getting to know the basic concept of controlling these wonderfull small animals, he's convinced that Pikmin is one of the best games he has played in quite a good while. "It's made so good, everything kinda fits together and makes sense". So I reluctantly ask him if he wants to borrow it, and he says 'yes'!
A NEW Pikminer is born I think!

So, I'll have a Sonic partEy until Sunshine hits the stores on Friday. I also showed him the Challenge Mode, I was just going to show it to him, and I got 294 on The Final Trial. I lost 1 Pikmin at BLL, and I failed to bring back one sheargrub, it was so well hid in the grass! 1st try on that stage for a long time, it was fun!
As Ahlyis once said: Maybe I'll try to fill up my scores with nothing but 299s!

lol, well. Good luck. I still play FT trying for the 299, but not too often. I've still just got the 2 perfects there.

Perhaps not the place for my two cents, but i can't really believe whitemage200 is not blackmage. Sorry if you're genuine [like Ahylis said] but i just refuse to believe it and we definitely need some evidence even of scores that get in the top 7 or 8 in my opinion.
