These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

Stein's on a rampage! Jeez!

Excellent job on the screenie, too! Everyone should look at it to see what we're talking about. Perfect in every way - big, legible, and indisuptable.

The second 278 on Impact Site is official! Congratulations, man! And slow the hell down on those other levels!

The Final Trial:

296

DAMN! Lost 2 at Beady Long Legs and 1 at a dwarf bulborb. Gave totally F*** when I knew it wasn't a perfect run.

Ahlyis, I'm soon by your side too! ;-)

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/8/2002 5:40:47 PM

lol, good luck :-)

The only problem I have with FT on any sort of regular basis is the stupid frog. Nothing else on the level is even remotely as dangerous. Sure, I lose some on Beady or the Snagret on occasion, but not that frequently. Thank God the frog comes so early so you don't waste a whole bunch of time before you know if you have a good shot at a perfect run or not.

BTW, I've changed my mind again on the magically dead Pikmin. They are NOT falling through the floor. I spent over 5 stinking hours on DS yesterday, mostly because of magical deaths. They always occur at specific points. If they were falling through the floor, the timing would be at least slightly random. It isn't. There are certain points of a fight where it can occur, depending on what you are fighting, but the most common is just as the creature dies. This is too precise for falling deaths. Try tossing one over the side of FN to see what a falling death is like timewise.

A little late, but CONGRATULATIONS SuperStein!

Having done so brilliantly at IS and FT now, please refer to my sig for a suggestion with regards to DS and FN.

Ahlyis:
I kill the frog death free 1 out of 2 times. BLL can some times stomp on my pikmin, but I have problems with the snagret, I dont know when he comes up slow, so when i wiggle my pikmin on top of his lair in he comes fast up. He ALWAYS grabs 1 or 2 pikmin. You haven't got a foolproof tactic for this do you.

I'm thinkin, maybe if i DONT wiggle them on top. Just wait besides him. And If he pops up slow i have the time to attach those pikmin to the suckers head. Will that work, cuz I HATE that bird. It's so frustrating to lose a pikmin when you've managed the Wollywog and Beady Long Legs death free.

That wasn't a problem at Impact Site, cuz there were no enemies, 'cept the beetle though, but he couldn't kill my precious ones.

If you have a good tactic for that damn bird, please tell me :)

robluvsnic:
Thanks man, I'll have to get a 299 on Final Trial before I move on. Then the next one will be Forest of Hope. I think :)

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/9/2002 10:09:28 AM

Use the method you are using now for the Snagret.

When he comes up fast, immediately run behind him or at least off to one side and whistle your Pikmin. You just have to be quick. 9 times out of 10, this works. the one time it doesn't is when one Pikmin ends up perfectly on the other side of the Snagret from you so that it gets stuck trying to decide which way to go around the Snagret and gets grabbed. But the other 9 times they will all come back to you. Then you just wait for the Snagret to leave and try again.

It sucks, but there's no way to know when the Snagret will come up slow.

Posted by SuperStein - 9/9/2002 10:49:12 AM

Thanks. Gonna get that 299 soon. Can almost take the wollyeog death free evertime now :)

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/9/2002 11:13:56 AM

What method do you use against the frog? I can kill him maybe 3 out of 4 times with no honest deaths, but even when I do, he often does the insta kill on a Pikmin when he dies. I can't see any way to control that piece of BS.

Posted by SuperStein - 9/9/2002 12:13:14 PM

LOL! Well... VERY important to have over 50 flowers.
Make it come FAR into the platform, as soon as he lands swarm him like a madman, after he tries to get up twice call your pikmin back. He'll jump straight up. And when he lands again, swarm him. Then he'll be dead!

And.. DARN!
I had no ddeaths until BLL and i was thinkin, maybe I'll try to kill him with 20 pikmin. I charge him and... DOH! Two pikmin dies.. DARN. I'm thinking, what the heck.. I'll need some practice against that snagret. And you know what. I kill him FIRST time he comes up.. LUCKY LUCKY.. so.. I finish the round and >BOOOOOOM! 297.. new record.. but why o why do i ALWAYS have to try to improve a very good method!! DOH DOH DOH! AND ARGH!!!

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/9/2002 1:01:53 PM

Use fewer Pikmin against Beady. I found lucky 13 to work well. 20 is too large a group to be easily manageable.

I know. found that out the hard way!

Yet a peculiar run. A perfect one.... almost... 298.. a 1 pellet must have gone to the wrong color.... DOH! I finsished long before the countdown commenced.... darn.. this level is easier than IS when you think of speed... but DAMN! The 3 monsters here are the 3 who'll most likely take pikmin from you in the enitre game.... DOH!!!

Well thanks! Hate it that i spoilt my shot at a perfect FT run! Gonna get it soon though... hopefully

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/10/2002 10:09:11 AM

There's only one thing in the game that I hate more than frogs. Snitchbugs! But thankfully, there are no snitchbugs in Challenge Mode. Frogs are bad enough.

I went back and played FT again last night. I seriously over-estimated my success rate against the frog!

FerretDruid makes me sick! I watched his DS video again and he kills frogs with ease. I can see what he did. I know what I do. I can't see a difference. But he kills them with ease and I lose Pikmin too often. Oh well.

Just try my tactic Ahlyis:

55 flower Pikmin, get the froggy good into the platform, swarm him like crazy. Let him try to jump up twice, call back your pikmin. let him jump, swarm him again. and e's dead!

I've done that. It doesn't seem to help me. The only thing I see from Ferret is that he swirls them around the frog instead of straight in, which I usually do. I've noticed that my Pikmin end up all around the frog anyway, so I doubt that really makes any difference, but perhaps...

I can explain how Ferret does it: he has magic powers.

He said the frog shakes in a certain way when it's going to go airborne that's different from when it doesn't, but I'll be damned if I can see it. I had a decent DS run going recently until I tackled one of the frogs by the long bridge and he squashed 40 pikmin on one jump. I turned it off.

TM

Posted by SuperStein - 9/11/2002 9:49:36 AM

Hmm.. well I swirl 'em around him.... Can't say I know more then.
But TomatoMan, I can say that sometimes I watch that froggy gettin killed and tries to jump up I can almost see it.... when he succeeds

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/11/2002 10:16:22 AM

Got a 508 on FoH last night. Not as good as my 510, but it's the first run over about 490 I've had since I started tweaking my patterns. That 508 was close to a lot better too. Several carcasses were in the landing area and almost to the onions, I think it was a borb and 5 dwarfs that didn't make it in time. I had everything except the yellow 20 either back or nearly back. I just needed another 10 seconds or less. Probably woulda been in the neighborhood of 540 or so. Hmm, I'll keep working on it.

Just watched Snap's 569. Word most often heard coming out of my mouth: "wow."

He taped it at EP, so the audio's going to be a little muted, but I'm transferring the 4g raw data (!) to my burning machine and getting ready to imovie it, which will take much of the afternoon. :P

Ahlyis, we'll probably need to do an overnight upload to your place - my outgoing bandwidth is pretty slow. Mail me off-list and we'll chat about it.

OH MY LORD! A 569 video for FoH! That's truly gonna be amazin... he clears the whole level.... right?

Posted by Lewellyn - 9/11/2002 12:37:51 PM

Nope, Ferret has 582... still uncleared... i really do doubt it can be completely sweeped.

Posted by Rouge7 - 9/11/2002 12:52:02 PM

That 582 is for the Distant Spring. 569 is the max for Forest of Hope, that's everything.

Yeah. Snap's 569 is a perfecto for Forest of Hope. It's awesome. He did it a long time ago, too.

TM

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/11/2002 3:56:23 PM

Well, here's the bad news: Snap's 569 on FoH done with the same settings as the IS and FT vids clocks in at a whopping 595 megs.

I'm doing the lo-res version now, we'll see what that comes out as.

Ahlyis, you still on board with something that large?

(Good thing we're doing a DVD, eh)

TM

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/11/2002 4:55:12 PM

Cool.

Now: the lo-res version (240x180, 15fps, mid-level quality) came in at 112 mb. That's so much smaller than the 320x240, 30fps, high-quality one that I'm redoing that one at mid-level quality to see how much difference it will be. People who want really good quality ones can get a copy of the DVD. :)

I hope there are no huge unforseen problems with the DVD. I'm looking forward to getting up to speed with iDVD2 now that I have it and seeing what it can do.

TM

Posted by TomatoMan - 9/11/2002 7:40:13 PM

There we go. I dropped the quality setting one notch and it came in at 328 for the hi-res version. That's better than almost 600, isn't it? Wow. It still looks OK, and I think cutting the size in half is worth one step down in quality.

I'll upload them to Ahlyis overnight and you all can follow his instructions from there!

My pleasure Rouge7 :-)

There was a problem with the FTP last night, but Tomato is uploading the Hi-res to me as I post this. I assume the lo-res will follow. Once I've got them, I'll put them up and post links here.

In the meantime...

FoH - 543

Since last night was my last chance to do FoH without any help, I made the most of it, or nearly so. :-)

I only had one death. A bear carcass was under the onion, less than a second from being sucked up. That only leaves the yellow 20 pellet, which I didn't try for. So, a perfect run for my current pattern would yield a 549. Only the yellow 20 remains out of reach.

I guess I'll watch Snap's video to see how different his pattern was from mine.

Ok, I've seen Snap's FoH video and am busy uploading it for the rest of you to download right now. I'll post the links in about an hour, once the files have finished uploading. In the meantime, here's my comments...

I gotta say, I'm seriously UN-impressed with Snap's Pikmin skills at that point! Don't take it wrong Snap, it's a great accomplishment to have done a 569 FoH run. I just think your skills are probably much better now than they were at the time you did that. Or would be if you still played :-)

I know, I know, he got a perfect run and I haven't yet. But really, he wastes a lot of time in the way he fights some things. There are several other areas too, where I can see he made a mistake in his time management. He makes up for it with his admittedly BRILLIANT use of bombs and a nice extension of which things to get first. I think I can get the 569 now and I only needed one piece of info from Snap. How to kill Bears fast and safe!. Though I will probably add in the extended enemy search as well. (see below)

Some of the things I noticed:
1) Bombs - I had been tossing a yellow at a sleeping borb and then tossing a second just as the first launches his bomb. this kills borb pretty quickly, but doesn't work for Bears. It takes 3 bombs for a Bear and you can only get two off before they are advancing on you. Snap is smarter than I was. He tosses his yellows RIGHT NEXT TO the sleeping bears/borbs, then calls them back before they can move. they drop their bombs next to the sleepers and come back to you. This is safer AND faster than my method and works perfectly well on Bears or Borbs. By far, the best thing I learned from his video.
2) Pattern - Snap goes after some further out enemies than I had been early on. This costs him more time at the start and I think more time overall, though it works just fine for him. I think only one of the extended enemies he goes after I need to add to my pattern. The rest I think I'll be faster by not going after them at the points he does.
3) Delays - Snap wastes a lot of time in areas fumbling with his Pikmin. Notably the pearl where the Radiation Canopy is in the main game, but other areas as well. He dismisses his Pikmin to sort out the bomb throwers and by that pearl, bumbles it on top of it all. I've gotten pretty fast at grabbing bomb throwers out of the middle of a swarm. By now, I bet Snap has as well. but in this video, he wastes a lot of time with things like that.

Don't get me wrong. I think Snap did an awesome job managing to get 569 on FoH. But he finishes with the clock nearly expired. I seriously think he could do it again and finish before the countdown timer starts! Not that he needs to :-)

I hope to be able to post my own 569 score soon now that I can kill the Bears quickly and safely! :-)

Posted by Ahlyis - 9/12/2002 5:49:34 PM

Another thing I remember from Snap's video. He pretty much ALWAYS rains on Dwarfs. While this is good when you have only a few Pikmin, It's faster to swarm them if you have a lot of Pikmin. There are areas he could have saved time by swarming instead of raining.

Small criticisms, but they all add up time-wise.

I'd like to thank Ahlyis again for his generosity in hosting the videos. Everyone please take his instructions seriously: download them only once and do not share the links.

I'll try to do Rogue7's FN video today.

Many things impress me about Snap's runs, as I expected. Most of all is that he did his 569 a LONG time ago, WAY before anyone else was anywhere near. He set high scores for all the levels, including several perfectos, in the first month or two and then moved on.

His sense of timing is amazing, and his ability to make up for early mistakes shows very quick thinking and resourcefulness. His use of bombs in the FoH run is really something to watch, and it solves a lot of timing problems I've been having with the bigger enemies (although I haven't tried another run yet). And there's a ryhthm to what he does that's hard to quantify, but it works. Very entertaining!

I've got to set this baby to start downloadin.... can't wait to see the borb 'n bear killing :P!

BTW, managed to hit the Flint Beetle 9 times (one more after the last 5'blue).. but still... no new pellet. Guess when you hit it 10 times, like TomatoMan did in story mode also counts for Challenge Mode... that means.. no pellet at least before the 11th hit. And DANG! My 2/3 days with Resident Evil has surely f*ucked up my skills on Final Trial.. played it once and lost 20 :P on the wollywog... gotta have some practice runs.

And Ahlyis: Thanks for keeping this monstrous downloads on the net. I surely appreciate it! Thanks man!

Better get back soon, Superstein, 'cause you should smell what I'm cookin':

FT - 294

This should have been a 296, I drowned two guys hurrying them across the bridge at the end. Little did I know I would finish before the countdown even started and there was no need to rush. I'm comfortable fighting the frog and snagret, but I seem to get at least two pikmin stomped by BLL. I hate that thing...

Posted by Rouge7 - 9/13/2002 12:46:06 PM

On my 294 I got lucky with the snagret in that he came up slow the first time. This meant no losses and a lot of time saved. I use the technique Ahlyis suggests of swarming the area and just calling everyone back behind the snagret if he comes up fast.
