GameFAQs archives

These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

MWAHAHAHAHA FEAR MY AWSUM POWA!

FoH - 306

eh, not a record, and that's with the 2 pearls.

Here's my strat, could someone help me tweak it? (I use all blues, so it isn't a surprise I let them get all the pellets.)

- day starts, pluck the 3 Yellows, flower them, head to the wall blocking the way to the snagret platform, bomb it.
- Get some more bombs, head to the ABC pearl (Use the path that leads to the radar in the main game), bomb it, use the bombs to defeat some enemies, the clock should be around the 1st or 2nd dot.
- Get the yellows to work on the bridge, the 3 enemies guarding the ACB pearl should be dead, and maybe the one sleeping next to the bridge.
- Run back to the onions, killing the dwarfs if you wish, or weakening them.
- Put the reds away. Get the blues to harvest pellets.
- Once you cleared out the Onion area, go to the bridge where you left the yellows, attacking/towing away the enemies as you go, don't forget to get the pellet posies to land on a blue for you to get more Pikmin.
- Get your blues to work on the bridge, throw some over the sides, some might act weird, whistle for them if they do.
- Once it's done, climb up, and start attacking the ClampClamp, drag the pearl away.
- Pick all the Pikmin, it should be around noon, maybe a dot before or after, when you start picking.
- Flower some, not all, just a few.
- WAGE WAR! Head to the area you went that has all the enemies, charge at them. The reason that I said to not really flower them all, is because when the bulborbs shake, the flowers will be knocked off, then the leaves will come next, a "second wave".
- Tow away the bodies, once again, don't forget the blue 10 up on the ledge, a running throw can get them up there. C-Swarm once they get down from it.
- Head into the water, and drag the 1s, NOT THE 10, JUST THE ONES.
- Head back and whistle for them, they will be idle under the onion.
- Head to the can where there are 3 red 1s, tow them away to, just have one pikmin on each, if there is 2 accidentaly, it's okay, it should be 3/4ths of they day done.
- Kill the bulborb in a very long painful battle.
- Avoid the dwarfs as you make your way to the box, throw pikmin to the 20, chuck pikmin at the box until there is a small space, call them back, and make your way.
- Get the pearl, attack the blubears and bulborbs if you wish.
- TOW THE BODIES AWAYZ0RZ.
- End day, you should have around 200+, a decent score.

Posted by Lewellyn - 8/12/2002 3:16:46 PM

Here's my strat - and whilst it's far from perfect - it should yield better results.

-Pluck the 9 pikmin and get them to pick up the 9 pellets, with blue getting blue, red getting red- etc.
-With the 27 pikmin plucked i get the 3 five pellets and get my 27 flowered.
-I have 42 pikmin all plucked now. I go up, kill the five small bulorbs in this section carry them pack and pcik up the blue 5 pellet in the water.
- While waiting for all these for sprout, i take my 42 and go down and kill the bulorbs and the one large bulorb next to the water.
- I now should have 100 pikmin. I pluck about 90-100 and proceed north. I take out the sleeping bulorb and start building the ramp with the pikmin and blow up the wall.
- I go into the area with the pearl, blitz the three bulorb creatures get the pearl and carry back the 3 bulorbs from near the pearl and the bulorb next to the ramp.
-When these are carried back. I go down again and head towards the sleeping bulorb and the red 10 pellet, killing everything in the way and killing the sleeping bulorb guaridng the 10 pellet.
- Here i blow up the wall to my left then go right, killing the enemies, picking up the red 20 and the yellow 10 and have all the bodies/pellets i've passed carried back.
-Now i get all my pikmin and head back the wall i've just blew up. I kill all the creatures, remove the obstacle go in, take out the two sleeping bulorbs and get the pearl.
-I carry back the pearl, all the bodies and the blue 20 pellet and they get back just in time.

I think this strat has a 450 max. roughly. So a better strat [or a link to one] would be appreciated. Or if someone could tell me which pages contain the strats inside this thread [expecially the IS one].

Rogue7, could you give me the site's address. BTW, posting to me would be pointless, i live in the UK. But thanks for the offer anyway.

Finally I got a new high score

Forest Navel 311

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/12/2002 11:23:36 PM

Another DVD update:

We're rolling!

I have in my hot little hands a tape of SnapDragon's 569 on FoH and 439 (?) on FN, both the highest known scores (well, highest possible on FoH, and highest known on FN), and I just heard from Ferret, who's going to send on his 582 on DS, the highest known score by a LARGE margin. (He did it twice, and said he'd let me pick the run. :)

With these, Ahlyis's 299-perfecto on FT, and my 278 on IS, I think we'll have the 5 best runs on each of the levels. If anybody's beaten any of these scores, speak up soon!

I'd hope that sometime in September this baby will be rolling. I burned a cheap-o DVD a couple of days ago and it went fine, so I think stamping these out should be pretty easy. I'm still assuming that I'll be able to get all five plus the graphics/etc on a 90-minute DVD, which is what iDVD2 lets you burn - so I hear. Haven't started monkeying with it yet, but I'll soon have all the raw footage, and then it's on to putting to together.

More as there's more,

TM

I'd pay about 5.50 for a DVD of the pikmin challenge mode.

DS - 467

Attempts at 442 for the Forest Navel have proved futile thus far and frustration has turned me to trying to break 500 on DS and FH. I hate frogs...

Posted by ShadowNinjaGuy - 8/13/2002 2:59:30 PM

Frogs are surprisingly simple. (this is assuming you have 100 leaf pikmin)

wait untill he does his thing, and when he lands, swarm them in a c-swirl motion, after about a second, call them back repeatedly, you need to make sure that you do damage, but still have time to call them. If he gets up, call them and push the C-Stick AWAY, you should be whistling and using the C stick at the same time. Doing this help reduce deaths by about 10 or more pikmin.

Posted by Ahlyis - 8/13/2002 5:22:32 PM

Bah, just swarm him and kill him. If you have 100 Pikmin, he shouldn't get airborne on you very often. Even if he does, call your Pikmin as soon as you can react when he goes airborne. If you do so, you shouldn't lose more than a handful of Pikmin at most anyway. Most of the time you'll kill him without him even jumping. On rare occasions he will still crush a ton of Pikmin. On those rare occasions, just restart.

It's way too slow to use your method of attacking for a second, then calling them off, waiting for him to jump, then repeating. If you have to kill more than one frog, you'll spend half the day just doing that!

I'm just a pigment of your imagination.

Posted by ShadowNinjaGuy - 8/13/2002 6:44:46 PM

Actually, You can swarm him for as long as you want, just that I usually call them back in a second or two to make sure none go squishy squishy.

New high score
Forest of Hope 430

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/15/2002 11:24:24 AM

Well, the DVD is still vaporware until I actually create it, so let's go one step at a time, OK? :)

As far as Norway goes (I spent a winter and two summers in the Lofoten Islands, in Stamsund and on Røst - loved it up there!), the only issues I can see are:

1. A little higher postage probably
2. A little longer to get there

My understanding is that iDVD does region-free encoding, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As far as pricing goes, let me reiterate what I've said before:

1. This is a labor of love. I'm doing it because I think it'll be cool and fun. I'm not doing it to make money. I'm just a shmoe with a Cube and a Mac, not a studio or a professional.

2. I'd also like to not lose money. To this end, the expenses I'd need to recoup are postage and media. For a cheap DVD and a cd-mailer with regular postage, this will be somewhere around $5 US for domestic mail, I'd guess.

3. I'll donate the electricity my machine needs to spend three hours burning your copy.

4. If you want to save a few bucks, send me a blank DVD and a postaged cd-mailer, and I'll burn your copy and pop it back in the mail for nothing. (Your risk, though, if your cheap DVD doesn't work, it's not my problem.)

5. Anybody who gets a copy is free to turn around and do whatever they want with it, including redistributing it under whatever terms they want. It will probably have a big warning on the splash screen stating that if you paid more than expenses for it, you got ripped off.

6. I've only got one machine and I'm not always at it, so if I get 100 requests, it's going to take me a while to get through them all.

7. Until I post a message saying "It's ready!", it's vaporware and you should all ignore me. :) Again, it's going to be AT LEAST a month before anything starts to emerge.

Posted by SuperStein - 8/15/2002 11:38:23 AM

I've just got one thing to say: CUBETASTIC! If this iDVD gets really real.. (urk..) .. sign me up for one! And I'm glad you liked Norway! I guess you landed in Oslo... only 50 kilometers from my hometown!

Posted by Ahlyis - 8/15/2002 12:10:56 PM

Do contributors get priority? I'm thinking there will be a pretty decent demand for this and you will be spending the next month after announcing the DVD just burning copies for all of us shmoes. I'd rather have a copy sooner than later, though I expect to pay the same as everyone else. :-)

On a side note. You should probably go buy a 25 pack of DVDs to burn. Burn them and test them. Then figure the cost based on how many burned correctly out of the 25. Maybe just do 10 packs. Hmm, just a thought anyway.

Posted by Lewellyn - 8/15/2002 12:23:34 PM

Personally, i think contributors should get priority, but everyone should get the chance to get one [providing demand is not excessive] - after all, we are the ones likely to get the most benefit from it...

also, thx loads tomatoman, i'm sure everyone thinks it's great how you're doing this, so cheers.

is it possible to get your IS video TomatoMan!? Before the iDVD comes?

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/15/2002 12:35:41 PM

I did pick up a 25-pack of DVDs, for about $50 delivered, so they'll be good to experiment with. I want to learn this stuff anyway, so it'll be a good experience.

Honestly, I'm not worrying too much about the money part - if I burn a few coasters and it costs me a few bucks, I'll probably manage to keep my house somehow anyway. :)

I'll get copies to the contributors ASAP when it's ready, don't worry. And since you all spent money mailing me your tapes, I can spend money back mailing the DVDs. Don't worry about it. The rest of you, slip a finsky in the envelope and we'll call it even! Or send me your own DVD-R in a postaged mailer and we'll call it a freebie.

But we're way ahead of ourselves here - gimme a few weeks to get the last tape, get iDVD rolling, burn my coasters, and come up with something good enough to share! :)

It's about 225 mb zipped. Dig through the archives in this board, you should find a link to it.

Posted by SuperStein - 8/15/2002 2:19:34 PM

the links are on page 25 of this topic! but they don't work! argh! i want it... *jumps into bed, starts crying*

Posted by Rouge7 - 8/15/2002 4:58:20 PM

blackmage 200, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways...

1 - Lousy, elusive pellet that would put me back on top, only I'm miles away when time expires.
2 - Times now that you have knocked me down to third in the last week.
3 - Points that separate us, the biggest margin I've been down.
4 - Other levels I've ignored while sparring with you
5 to 424 - 'Cause you stink.
425 - Score you pulled and number that will haunt me probably for the rest of my days...

All kidding aside, I don't hate you. I would've quit at 401 if you weren't around. Great work, 425 is big time hard.

P.S. I haven't given up yet...

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/15/2002 5:49:47 PM

Ahlyis had very kindly been hosting the files for a while, but we shouldn't count on him to keep doing this.

It seems FilePlanet might accept files like this - I'll try submitting the IS demo there and see if they'll take it. I'll have to upload it to my server so they can get it, though, and that will have to happen overnight with my slow outbound bandwidth. We'll see where that goes as an effort...

Posted by SuperStein - 8/16/2002 2:43:17 AM

Thank You! It's not there yet.... but I keep my fingers crossed!

Posted by Ahlyis - 8/16/2002 10:42:13 AM

I'm putting the videos back up again. The links are, as mentioned above, on page 25 assuming you use 10 posts per page. I use 20 per page so it's actually page 13 for me :-)

If you download the videos, please post comments here. I know I want to hear your comments and I assume Tomatoman and Ferret Druid do too! Nothing like a little ego boost now and then. :-)

New High scores

Impact site 237
Final Trial 210

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/16/2002 2:29:39 PM

I would like everyone here to pause for a moment of reflective gratitude to Ahlyis for hosting the VERY LARGE demo files. This is not trivial at all and it's very much appreciated!

We should definitely see if FilePlanet will take them, but doing so is a time-consuming process. I can upload them to my server so they can pull them down (after which I will delete them, I pay by the gigabyte and it ain't cheap), but it will take one night each to upload them, and there's no guarantee they'll even take them, or any guess as to how long it will be before (if) they appear.

So: thanks again, Ahlyis, for sharing the love! :)

what media player do you need to play the movies

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/16/2002 8:37:30 PM

The Impact Site and Final Trial videos are QuickTime .mov. I think Ferret's Distant Spring is a .WMP?

Posted by Ice Man - 8/17/2002 4:17:27 AM

when i try to play the impact site movie in Quick Time it says it can't understand the file

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/17/2002 8:00:11 AM

It uses Sorensen, so you'll need at least QT 5 (I think). Make sure you're up to date.

Posted by Ice Man - 8/17/2002 8:39:57 AM

i have got QT 6 thanks anyway

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/17/2002 9:04:07 AM

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work if you've got QT6 - corrupted download maybe? Mac or PC? Other people have downloaded it and played it OK. Hm.

Posted by Ice Man - 8/17/2002 9:18:41 AM

pc ill download it again it most probably was a corrupted download

Your Impact Site video is FANTASTIC! I've never seen anyone do it so quickly! You get ALL of the pellets... and your throwing at the Flint Beetle is truly amazing! This is/must be the perfect run! Thanks again for being such a terrfic Pikmin player... now I will try to improve my Pikmin IS score.. from 224! I haven't had the time to watch the other videos so closely yet.... but gratitude will come there as well! Big thanks to Ahlyis for hosting this jumbo files! And .. yes... what was it I was going to say... I've got it... thanks GameFAQs!

New High
Final Trial 230

TomatoMan I just finished downloading your impact site video and it was awesome. Now I have to improve my score from 237 which I think I will do today because your video was so helpful.

Posted by TomatoMan - 8/17/2002 12:18:19 PM

Thanks, guys. :)

I did get a few others over 273 - a couple of 276s and a 277 - before the 278, which as far as we know is the highest you can go, unless you can somehow get something more out of the flint beetle after the 8th hit. I found that I could only do that about one time in 20, which is why the 278 was so hard.

Once in the regular, non-challenge game, I hit the flint beetle ten time on IS - he was just wedged in a corner and stayed there and I pounded him. The 9th and 10th hits both yielded nectar, which broke the 1-n-n-5 pattern that seemed to hold to that point, and that was a great relief - I was thinking that a ninth hit might yield another 1-pellet, making a 280 possible, but it looks like it isn't. Phew. :)

As far as speed goes, I've got a 273 run on tape somewhere where I finish the entire thing before the "it's almost sunset - hurry up!" warning. Now THAT was fast. :) Only did it once though.

I'm keeping a close eye on the constantly-delayed GameShark, because it seems that it will allow you to turn off the clock in the game somehow. This would be a big help for people trying to do perfect runs, to practice without the clock sometimes. It also raises the possibility of finding out what a perfect run would yield on DS and FN, both way too big to clean out in the regular time allowed. Sometimes it would be fun to just wander around and collect things without the pressure of the clock on you every second.

Posted by Ahlyis - 8/17/2002 3:58:50 PM

Post 400!

We'll need a third challenge mode thread before too long!

Thanks for the kudos all, but it isn't that big of a deal really. It's not really my server, I just happen to work for the company that is unknowingly providing the hosting :-) I don't consider it too big of a deal since the server automatically purges older files periodically anyway.

So basically, the files are up for now, but will eventually disappear again. So hopefully, Tomatoman will get those DVDs ready :-)
