These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

want to update the Leader Board... But right now it's just my DS
scores, I think...
C'mon!

Glad you're still kickin', Ferret. I have
purposely left myself cubeless for a couple of weeks because I'm in
a real crunch work-wise and don't seem to have the willpower to
leave the damn thing alone if it's sitting there. I'll be back in
the saddle soon enough and then I'm going to try to bring my FT and
FN scores up!
Posted by Ahlyis - 5/7/2002 11:58:57 AM
Wow! OK, I guess I'm gonna have to install AIM
so I can get the video. If I do, I'll add it to the files I've
already posted. I don't think I could add a Hi-Res version, it would
just be too big. If Tomato converts it to Quicktime though, I could
probably put up the low-res version along with the WMV
version.
No new scores yet for me. I rented Nightcaster for
the Xbox and am playing it right now. It's long, but pretty
simple.

Forest Navel - 398
Woo freakin'
hoo! Hey wait, it sounds kind of pathetic to say "woo hoo" after
beating one's own score by a single, solitary point, doesn't it? But
I'm excited because my 398 kills the 3-way tie for second place on
this level! I now have sole possession of second place on the Forest
Navel! Believe me, this is a huge accomplishment. Pretty much any
hardcore Pikmin Challenge Mode competitor will agree with me when I
say that FN is the most aggravating level in the game. The funny
thing is that this particular run started out rather poorly. While I
was waiting for everything to arrive back to the onions at one point
I was forced to just stand around and wait. That's annoying.
I can do better. I know I can. Maybe I will.
Yeah so I'm
back. But I need a job and have to get my life in order so I don't
know how much Cubing I will be doing in the coming weeks. At least
I'm back, though - providing Ferret with one extra score to update
the list with. Once again, WOO HOO!

Ahlyis, sorry I missed your IM. In the future,
if you see me signed on - you can right-click on my screen name and
select "Get File"... As long as there's no firewall problems
(happens sometimes) you should be able to download it from my AIM

This does not apply to anyone who is not on

The Distant Spring - 582
This
would make a very pleasant video, I had a nice finish and only one
really big mistake. So, although it is only one mistake, I'm quite
upset about it (8 or so Pikmin munched be a stupid clam, due to my
own carelessness).
So, that and the usual disappearing
Pikmin make me want to try again to hopefully pull off a 590.
Right about now, the only think keeping me from getting 600
(during any run where I actually get everything I am supposed to,
and get it back in time) is the randomness of the colors that are
dropped by enemies. If I can get nearly all blues I will be able to
do it. Hopefully I will be able to keep this up until that happens.
Oh, and of course I need to NOT lose a bunch of Pikmin to the
ClamClamp.
(ARGH!)

One question Ferret. How do you get the camera
to swing in front of you as you pick Pikmin from the ground? Somehow
you get it to keep rotating to stay so that the onion is always
behind you. What do you press to get this effect? I always end up
with the camera facing towards the 'target'.

Ah, I knew someone would ask that eventually..
Good question :)
To do that, just lightly hold the L
button while you are plucking. Then, you can actually pan the view
in whatever direction that you want. I found it to be quite useful
when trying to get a view of the surrounding area while I'm a
pluckin'

I'm still here, though I'm not actively playing
Pikmin anymore.
To be honest, I'm waiting for something
decent to come out for either the GC or Xbox. It's pretty sad that
I'll be happy with just a decent game. Whatever happened to only
being excited if something really good came out? Oh well, I guess
tons of mediocre games have left me starved for ANYTHING worth
playing.
Pikmin was an awesome game, but I think I've burned
my way through it long enough. I shall remember it fondly and will
keep the Pikmin board in my favorites for a long time to come.

I'm here too - was playing Pikmin tonight, in
fact! :P I had to detox a little because I had been way overdoing
it. I was trying Forest of Hope again, and am still stuck in the low
400s.
I've been really keenly aware lately of how much I wish
there had been an "untimed" play option in the game. I think in all
senses it's a superb game, but the forced stopping in Challenge Mode
seems like a really unfortunate choice in retrospect. I've been
keeping an eye on the GameShark with the question of whether it
might permit a hack of a clock-stopping nature, but its May release
was just pushed back to August, and no details of what it can do are
available yet. Makes me suspicious.
I'm not sure I'm going to
be bettering my scores by much, but I don't think my enjoyment of
the game is going to diminish much either. There's something about
the buildup, the orchestrating of a symphony of co-ordinated pikmins
marching their pellets back to the onions, the blurps of new seeds
and the poinks of freshly-picked pikmins ready to get to work that
just works for me.
The board is in my Mozilla menus and I'm
not going anywhere. I just have less to report these days other than
"still no new high scores for me." :P
Posted by Ferret5317 - 5/22/2002 5:12:12 AM
I have not heard a thing from topotheclass or
redpichead. No AIM, either. I talk to Nathan and JimithingR in AIM
so I don't miss them. LOL
Ugh, it's late. Tired. Monkey
Ball... (I know, I kinda gave it up for awhile then I got hooked
again like a whore on crack)
I actually still make DS runs
every now and then, but if I don't play for a few days I have to do
about 10 runs before I'm back up to the skill level I left off
at...
Perhaps I will dedicate this three day weekend to
trying to accomplish my long-awaited goal of 600 on Distant Spring.
If so, you'll be hearing from me quite soon Steve.

I'm considering writing a Challenge Mode
Walkthrough. Everyone, please post your exact strategys used(and if
you did, please elaborate)here and I'll give you full credit. Some
of may think this will make everyone get highscores(it is intended
to) but that won't be nessarily true becuase Challenge Mode still
requires skill, which no guide can give. Thank you for your
cooparation.
Anyway, this game needs a Challenge Mode guide,
it's the only In-Depth FAQ missing.

submitting it now.
Sorry Xel, but I don't see any reason to
compile them all into one file. I think it will be easier for player
to find what they want if each is in a separate file. But thank you
for giving me the push to get this done. :-)

Hi guys. Just got back from a bit of a vacation
(and E3!). I see you've totally decimated TDS, Ferret. Wish I knew
how you managed that! I think my strategy would top out at 550-560,
and I'm not even sure I could get that high. You're insane.
:)
I guess I'm probably done with Pikmin for good, which is a
bit of a shame. It was definitely fun while it lasted, especially
with you guys around to make it challenging. Maybe I should go
capture my latest runs now (and lose my FN record).
Take
heart, Ahlyis, I saw some great stuff down the line at E3. :) And
I'm really, really excited about the Xbox Live system. Someday soon,
I may end up playing those of you who own Xboxes directly! Hooray!

*thinks about laughing* Nah, my scores used to
be like that too.
Hey Snap (and Blah too) did you take a look
at the DS video from the link I posted a few pages back?
I'd
take you on live Snap :-) I've got an Xbox. In fact, right now I'm
playing Project Gotham Racing and having quite a blast. Driving
games aren't usually one of my favorite genres. But PGR is laid out
almost EXACTLY the way I would design a game. Tons of things to do.
Tons of stuff to unlock, most of it useful. Stuff that gets unlocked
just for playing X amount of time or covering X amount of miles.
Difficult challenges. And, so far, impossible gold medal
levels.
Gimme a game with tons of variety and objectives with
rewards and I'm loving it :-) That was Pikmin's only problem IMO.
Great game engine, but not nearly enough challenges or in-game
rewards.

Posted by Ahlyis - 6/6/2002 11:17:49 AM
157 is pretty good for your first day. The
record (and almost certainly unbeatable) is 278 by Tomatoman. 264 is
a perfect run ignoring the flint beetle. Several have gotten 273
from a perfect run and the flint beetle. Only Tomatoman has managed
to hit that ****ed beetle enough to get to 278. Anything higher is
theoretically possible, but only theoretically.
But 157 is
still quite good for your first day. My first try at Challenge mode
only yielded about 127 on Impact Site.
---
I'm just a pigment
of your imagination.
Posted by SnapDragon - 6/6/2002 11:05:28 PM
Actually, we're pretty sure that TomatoMan's 278 is the theoretical maximum, too. You can't get any more pellets out of the Beetle.
Posted by TomatoMan - 6/7/2002 12:17:35 AM
All I have to say is, thank God I managed the
278, because I haven't managed to do ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS
NOTEWORTHY! :)
As I mentioned a while back, I did hit the
flint beetle ten times in a normal game once and he didn't give
anything up past the eighth hit. Who knows, maybe he'd barf
something else up on 11 or 12 or 13 or 22... but I just can't
imagine how you could even hit him 11 times. The ONE time I did ten
(never did nine, managed a handful of eights in hundreds of tries),
I had the beetle perfectly pinned against the matchbox and was
raining reds on him one after another with no intervals - it was
really about as good as you could get. And this is the beetle that
emerges near the matchbox to begin with, and he runs right into it -
the one in Challenge Mode comes out of the bush near the firespout
and has some distance to travel first if he does manage to wedge
himself in there.
I guess until someone studies the object
code we'll never know for sure, but I'm sleeping pretty comfortably
with the notion that the 278 could be tied, but not beaten.
:)
Tried a FN run today just for giggles, first time I've
played in a few weeks. Got around 245. Turned it off again. :P
Posted by TomatoMan - 6/7/2002 6:17:43 PM
Every time I think I've kicked this game for
good, it finds its way back into my head.
I'm THRILLED with
this:
Forest of Hope: 508
That's my first score
over 500 on any level! And it beats my old high score by 50. I'd
forgotten how good that feels! I've never seen any videos of this
one, so I'm making my own path up as I go, and I think I made a big
improvement. Still plenty of room for improvement overall - I didn't
have time for the bridge area and the blues in the water, but I
think I got everything else, although a couple of dwarfs didn't get
counted under the onions as time ran out.
Pathetic that I'm
still at it, but there it is!
Posted by Ferret5317 - 6/8/2002 11:47:35 AM
200th post!
I'm glad to see that,
despite the somewhat depressing slowdown, the challenge is still on
for some of us. :)
I have not really played much at all since
I decided to get hopelessly addicted to online gaming. (Currently
running Dungeon Siege and Warcraft 3 Beta. Warcraft 3 rocks. It's
just awesome!)
I see we have a few newbies here too, and
hopefully their scores will get up to top 5 sometime
:)
Congrats on the 508 TomatoMan! That's one level that I
really don't like at all, and perhaps I'll try harder in the future
to pick up that controller and work on it, hehe..
No updates
to make, I suppose. Well, peace
all
