These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

The Forest Navel: 289
MUCH better.
I got
the pearl this time, and got the 20 and 10 pellets I
missed.
The Forest Of Hope: 309
This is my favorite
Challenge Mode level (Forest Navel is second) but I couldn't make
much improvement from last time. I still couldn't get both pearls,
but I got the Snagret one instead of the ACB one and got more done
that way. However, lots of stuff was on its way when the day ended.
That stuff included about 7 Dwarf Bulborbs, 2 Spotty Bulborbs, and
most of the blue pellets in the water.

my Distant Spring 569 run recorded... Perhaps sometime soon I will
get one of my two 582's recorded...

Probably because they're GIGANTIC and nobody has
the bandwidth to host them. The Impact Site run was 225mb, and that
was the smallest of the lot so far. If you or anybody reading this
has the capacity to host files that big, post a note here and we'll
get them to you with our sincerest gratitude.
Still toying
with the idea of a Challenge Mode Championship DVD someday if any of
the rest of you are interested... I think we'd need to get the very
best runs available on each level. We've got Impact Site and Final
Trial nailed, and I think whatever Ferret comes up with on Distant
Springs will be the final word on the matter (c'mon Ferret, break
600!) - we'd need a perfecto on Forest of Hope (did you record your
569, Snap?) and the best run on Forest navel (Snap again, as of now
the only known score over 400, right?). With VHS tapes of the runs,
I can do the rest, and I'd be happy to make and distribute the DVDs
at cost (media + shipping) if there was interest. I think it would
be a fun project. We could even add a "run-maker's comment" to each
segment, a few screens of text and graphics where the run can be
described and commented on. That would be cool, eh?

Yep, my FOH and FN scores are both on tape. So all the best runs on every level are on tape. That'd make for a great DVD! If you decide to do it, I guess I could mail you my tape... but I'd need a solemn oath that you would return it in a timely fashion. :)

I'd love to get a challenge mode DVD. I finally
started challenge mode (I'd just been amusing myself with the
regular game, and then took a break) and got 205 in my first night
on Impact Site. I haven't beaten that since.
I was watching
TomatoMan's Impact Site video and thinking how much nicer it would
be if it wasn't compressed to within an inch of its life.
I'd
happily pay media+shipping+whatever for a challenge mode
DVD.

Well, heck, it seems there might actually be
some rumblings of interest in this! Let's think it through.
Hmmm....
Snap, no problem on the solemn oath thing... the
best protection of all would be for you to pop the record-prevention
tabs off your tapes and then dupe them, and send me the dupes...
which I would return. Of course, we'd get marginally better quality
with first-generation tapes, but I'm always paranoid about my VCR
freaking out and munching an irreplaceable tape. Not that that's
likely, but with the Universe and all you never know.
I've
still got Ahlyis's FT tape (although I think my existing capture of
it is fine).
I might have to refuse to do it on principle
until Ferret breaks 600 on DS. :) C'mon, Ferret, step up
man!
What I'd have to see is whether the five runs could be
contained on one DVD relatively uncompressed - or compressed for
DVD, more to the point. I think Apple's iDVD software can only burn
the first layer, or an hour or so's worth of video. I'm guessing
that the five runs together would be over an hour, since IS is the
shortest at about 11:30, so we'd probably be looking at 1:15 or
1:20, right? Lemme look into that and see what I can dig
up.
It would also be fun to do little ten-second intros for
each of them like I did for IS - I have plenty of free music (from
FreePlay) in 10 and 15-second versions, and could pick one for each
level and do some screenshots. It would be great as well if the run
authors could each do some annotation/comments on the runs, as well
as giving me anything they wanted to appear in the "credits" scroll
at the end.
Lemme dig a little more on the whole DVD-capacity
thing and I'll report back shortly. And Ferret, get busy on that
600!

Well, let's just get straight to the bad news:
it appears that iDVD does indeed limit you to about 1 hour on a DVD.
This means we'd either have to drop one of the runs, or do two. Or
someone has to pony up $900 for DVD Studio Pro or some such. Or does
anybody actually have it?
Failing that, we might still be
able to do a DVD-ROM - I think we'd be able to use the full
capacity of the disk that way, and spin a simple html interface to
it - but it wouldn't play in a DVD player, it would require a
machine with a DVD ROM player.
Thoughts?
Posted by SnapDragon - 6/11/2002 11:35:51 PM
That's a pity. But a DVD-ROM should be fine. Not like DVD-ROM drives are scarce these days. :)

My Macintosh tech expert informs me that iDVD
version 2 can put 90 minutes on a DVD. The original version could
only do 60. It uses a slightly higher compression level, so the
quality will theoretically be lower, but since much of our source
material will be VHS the quality difference will only be
theoretical.
So, all five levels should easily fit on one
DVD, with lots of room for fancy menus, titles, commentary (multiple
languages and subtitles? :-) etc.
Sorry Ferret - I *like* DVD
players! :-)

Haven't seen any posts in awhile, so I hope you
guys are working on that DVD...
Meanwhile, I need help with
the Forest of Hope. I'd like to break 500, but my best is 444 with
two pearls. I don't seem to have time to get the yellow 20 or kill
the bullborbs/bulbears around the pearls. I think I'm taking too
long to grow 100 pikmin and flower them. Currently I use the pellets
and dwarves nearby to get to 100. Any alternate strategies to do
this quicker?
And yes, I know I spelled Rogue wrong, I
haven't figured out how to change it yet...

Posted by TomatoMan - 6/22/2002 12:16:58 PM
Sorry, I've been in Real Life Hell(tm) for the
past two weeks and have barely had my head above
water.
Here's what needs to happen:
1. We need to be
sure the five videos together are less than 90 minutes. I think they
are, but we need to be sure.
2. Ferret needs to break and
tape 600 on Distant Spring. :)
3. I need to get tapes of FoH
and FN from Snap, if he's willing to part with them. Dupes would be
ideal.
4. I need to set up a pricing structure that everyone
would be comfortable with - I'm happy to do it all for basically
zero cost, but I don't want it to wind up costing ME money to do if
I can avoid it. The best way to do this would be to have people that
want a DVD to send me a blank DVD-R in a SASE, with the risk that if
it burns a coaster they're SOL (so use good media). If I have to buy
media for people, I'd have to charge whatever it cost, and ditto for
postage. This increases the Pain In The Fanny factor for me, which
I'd prefer to avoid.
Of course, if anyone else wanted to do
production with a copy of the DVD, that would be fine too, under
whatever terms they wanted - I guess we'd all have to be OK with
this essentially being a public domain project. Speaking for myself
and my IS run, I'm fine with that.
5. Ideally it would be
great to get a commentary from each run's author that could be
included on the DVD somehow, and maybe some artwork for backgrounds
and so forth - screen captures or something else.
It's
definitely a summer project if there's enough interest, but it's not
going to happen next week. :)

IS:

FoH: 164
FN: 183
DS:
114

Is there a video of FN that I could get from one
of you? It's the one I'm best at, but I could use some help on it. I
still can't break my 183 (although I got 185 on my last try, but
then i killed 6 Pikmin by accident.)
By the way, someone
suggested eariler that we have a newbie board. I think this would be
a good idea, because those of us who can't touch the high scores on
the current leaders board have no real sense of competition. I was
thinking anyone with scores under 250 should go on the newbie
board.

I'll start
working on DS, and figure out a way to break 600 - As far as the
commentary, etc... I'm a little modest abo- wait.. No, I'm not. Erm,
I guess I don't have an excuse other than imagining myself not
wanting to add one. But, perhaps I can put something interesting at
the beginning like the old-fashioned "countdown" screens of a
speechless black and white movie. Eh? Steve, I think you can do the
rest :) I don't know how to add credits, that
is...

I'm out for 2 weeks of vacation and when I come
back, this board isn't dead yet?!?! :-)
What kind of
commentary were you thinking of Tomato? Just some text about the
video? A running verbal commentary overlaid on the video?
What?
I have no problem with my video being released to the
public. If anyone wants to put it on a DVD and sell it, as long as
it is a cost only project and not for profit, then have at it!
However, if any of you out there reading this plans to put it out
for production costs + $5.95 shipping and handling (or anything else
like that), then I do NOT consider that to be a not-for-profit
venture and I do NOT authorize the use of my video. (I know that
that's not you Steve, but others may be planning something
too.)
As to why the videos are no longer there. The server I
put them up on automagically deletes files after 90
days.

One more thing. What about expanding the top
scores list instead of creating a whole new topic for newbies? If we
expand the top 5 to be a top 10 or top 15, then there should be
plenty of room for everyone and competition for spots on the board
would still be possible for the newer gamers. Right?
---
I'm
just a pigment of your imagination.
Posted by TomatoMan - 6/24/2002 10:38:04 PM
I like the idea of expanding the top scores list
rather than doing a "newbie" list. I'd even get back on one or two
of them if we did that! :)
I was thinking of just text
commentaries for the DVD, that could perhaps be made into nice
graphics (maybe two or three pages/screens), laid over faded stills
from the run? Or something like that. I dunno, just an idea to add a
little flavor and a nice way for the run authors to describe their
runs however they wanted to.
On the production costs, I agree
that I hate this trend of "absolutely free, plus $49.95 shipping and
handling!" I bought a game cartridge on eBay last week that had a
flat $5 shipping charge; it turned up a week later with a $1 stamp
on the envelope. I was irked. :P
I'm happy to volunteer my
time making the DVD and only collect actual production costs for any
that I produce - starting with a SASE and DVD-R would reduce that to
zero for me, removing any question about "making a profit," and that
would be easiest for me and what I'd prefer. My biggest worry is
about burning duds - I've never burned a DVD before, and I don't
know how often duds occur; I know I still get the odd coaster when I
do CD-R's. If someone sends me a blank DVD-R and it turns out to be
a dud, what then? Am I expected to replace it at my cost? Likewise,
if someone sends me $5 for a DVD-R and I buy it for them at Staples
and it's a dud, do I have to keep buying them until we get a good
burn?
I'd like to have this issue out in the open early on so
we can collectively decide what's fair - at least if it's me
producing this thing. Of course, anyone else who wanted to could
step forward too!

FoH = 243
YAHOOOOOOO!!!!11!!
I beat
200! And no pearl!
Anyway, I was wondering about the DVD thing,
would it really be worth it? Couldn't you make a huge freakin'
amount of VHS tapes to copy them?
But if you REALLY want to
do this, I can't send money, but i'll give verbal help.
Posted by mojoman - 6/24/2002 11:16:52 PM
You could also make it a data CD for people to
watch on their computers, which would be a lot easier. Then just
have some audio files so that people could access both at
once...that's just a thought...
With the DVD-R and coasters
thing, if you wouldn't mind taking the time, you could possibly use
DVD-RWs, test them, and then if they don't work, erase
them...

Well, when I say DVD-R, I mean "real" DVDs, so
you could pop them in your DVD player and watch them on your
TV.
Of course, I could also do DVD-ROMs, with plain old
(gigantic) movies - I don't know whether DVD-ROMs or DVD-Rs are more
prone to toastertude, I'm just being paranoid.
We could
certainly do VHS too. Seems sad though, I'd definitely want
something on DVD for myself even if no-one else did.
Posted by Ahlyis - 6/26/2002 11:21:23 AM
I think you'll have to burn a few and find out
what kind of coaster rate you get. If its low, then we just let the
buyer know that they should send 2 blank DVD-Rs to be safe. If both
happen to fail, then you would need to contact them to find out how
they want to proceed.
If the coaster rate is high though,
then I don't know if this is really such a good idea. You can't
really expect people to keep buying you blank DVD-Rs which you then
turn into coasters for them! :-)
---
I'm just a pigment of
your imagination.
Posted by TomatoMan - 6/26/2002 1:50:56 PM
Yeah - really, I'm just being paranoid. I have
no idea how often this happens. Besides, how would people know I
wasn't just keeping their DVD-R blanks and saying "send me another
one, I got another coaster!" :) (I suppose I could send the coasters
back, but then how would people know it was THEIR coaster and not
one of mine... ugh, so hard to set up a foolproof perfect-trust
sysem)
Still, though, I don't think this paranoid fear is
reason not to do it. I think it would be fun, and I'm sure there are
at least a handful of people who'd enjoy it - I know I
would.
So, I think the next step at least is for us to
proceed with making videos of the other runs - which would mean Snap
would need to loan me his FN and FoH runs (or loan me copies, which
would make me sleep a little better), and Ferret needs to turn his
600 on DS over too. :) I can rip them to DV format, and then things
can proceed.
At the worst, even if the DVD isn't produced, I
could make QT vids out of the others like I did for IS and FT.
Right?
How about that top-15 list of high scores? Who's going
to do it? :)
Posted by Ahlyis - 6/26/2002 5:25:00 PM
Wasn't it Ferret who was reposting the top 5
list periodically?
Well, whoever does it will need to go back
to the start of this thread and go through each of the 250+ posts to
compile the new board. That'll be quite a bit of work. Add to that,
getting hold (if they don't already have it) of the previous 500
post topic and going through THAT as well.
Perhaps we should
just stick to this post huh? That's plenty of work and anyone who
had scores on the old topic can simply repost them here if they want

Actually, I doubt SwordsmanX could have been
serious.
You START with 100 Pikmin. So to get a high score of
9, he would have to have only played it once and he would have had
to kill 91 of his 100 initial Pikmin. Anything else would have given
him a higher score for a top score. So I think we should remove that
score next time someone updates the scoreboard!

My high scores (Just improved on FoH and FT last
night):
IS - 216
FoH - 461
FN - 298
DS - 386
FT -
204
Still trying to break 500 & 400 on FoH and DS. That
298 on FN was frustrating that I couldn't get one more
pellet...

Played a crapload over the weekend, but only two
new highs...
FoH - 473
FT - 231

I managed 205 on Impact Site. I hadn't realized
that qualified for seventh place. Cool.
I did that on my
first day (fifth attempt?) and I haven't been able to beat it
yet.

FN: 277
FT: 155
My FN playing
has taken a huge leap. Instead of averaging 200 on each play, I've
started averaging 250 or so. I've been toying with the idea of
returning some yellows to the onion after they bring back the 20 to
get more blues. Is this a good or bad idea? I can post a complete
strategy if you want.

New high last night:
FT - 243
My
current strategy has a max of 246, so I have to figure something
else out to go any further with this.
AdvanceGamer, which
yellow 20 are you talking about? I grab the one where you have to
build the two bridges (where the bombs in the can are in normal
mode) and then use those yellows to get the 20 by puffstool if I
have time. I want to be much higher on this level, but the way I do
it I'm lucky to get in the 290's.

Ok, since we seem to have a new influx of
competitors. I'm putting the Impact Site, Distant Spring and Final
Trial videos back up. They should be up for 90 days before they get
automatically removed again. I'm uploading now, so they should be
there by the time anyone actually reads this! :-)
As last
time, please do not re-post these links ANYWHERE. And please
download the files only ONCE. Save them to your computer and run
them from
there.

Thanks go out again to Tomatoman (for the IS videos
and helping make my FT videos) and FerretDruid (for the DS
video).

I skip that yellow 20 altogether. I only bring
back the one by the puffstool. The yellows also bring back the
pearl, so it comes out about even. Also, thx for the movies guys!!
I'm downloading them as I type.
