These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

The Forest Navel - 394
I am
rapidly approaching perfection in the level, that time, the only
things that I missed (That I can think of) were the Yellow and Red
20's down by the water, along with the Yellow and Blue 10's near
them, also the Blue 20 near the pearl I left behind for experimental
purposes. I had one MAJOR screw up at the Beady Long Legs gate and I
had to make a time consuming detour from my usual route. As well, at
the end of the day I had PLENTY of time to run around with 100
Pikmin not really knowing what to do. So, we'll see what tomorrow
brings :)
According to previous calculations, the supposed
total for this level is 482. I will have to examine it more closely
now that I know it like the back of my hand to be totally
sure.
Well, good luck to all competing, and Nathan... Keep on
truckin! hehe

The Distant Spring
I got a 303.
Hey, thats only 30 away from the challenge score in the Pikmin
Guide. It was pretty hard too- I even missed out on the second
mushroom, and didn't get close the the 3rd
pearl.

TomatoMan, you still marooned in the real
world?
Afraid so, but I'll be getting a break soon, and I
plan an all-out assault on the "perfect 264" on IS this
Thursday/Friday/Weekend. Then it's on to Forest of Hope, which is
the only other one I've played at all. I did half-a-dozen or so runs
about a month ago and wound up with around 370 as my best, but
clearly that can be improved a long way. I have to learn how to
fight bad guys without losing pikmin! c-stick swarm with 100 reds is
my current tactic, but that may not be feasable on a larger
scale.
I love seeing this topic being so heavily
thrashed! I agree, this is probably the most addicting video game
experience I've had on a console since Ghosts and Goblins on the
SNES. I love that after the long journey through IS, I'll have
four more levels to learn and master! Or try to master. You
all will get there long before me. :)

I haven't given up Ferret, I've been sick and I
couldn't even lift myself up let alone a gamecube controller, but
I'm on the verge of a full recovery and have thought of a plan to
get an easy 390 in Forest Navel if I can follow through with it. I
also see that Nathan has joined the competition. Well best of luck
to the both of you. Also I saw that you scored an amazing 394 on FN
that's amazing same with you Nathan I can see that your scores are
progressing. Well my gamecube is calling me and by the way my best
scores are:
Forest Navel-340
Distant Spring-425
Final
Trial-208
Forest of Hope-472
Good Luck!

Ferret I have a new high score of 357. I can't seem to do better than that although at the end of all my new runs{which all of them I've scored in the 350's} I had two 20's on the way. Any advice?
Posted by redpichead - 2/27/2002 5:07:49 PM
Forest Navel-375!
Finally one
of the two twenties made it before time ran out! I am
#1!!{technically #2}. I hope your score can reach the 400's Ferret.
You too Nathan, keep trying.
Good Luck to the both of you!

Muahahaha... I will break 400 by the end of the
night. :)
Excellent job, redpichead! And to think, a few days
ago that would have crushed my previous high score... I'm glad I
decided to alter my strategy a bit :)
I have a feeling that
tonight is definitely my night to break 400 though. So, I'm going to
jump on it right now!

Wow, you guys are nuts at Forest Navel! Ok,
tomorrow I'm going to make a serious effort to tear myself away from
Sonic Adventure 2 emblem-collecting (you'll probably all hear the
ripping noise) and make a real attempt at this level. I probably
won't be able to tape, but at this point I don't care. The
competition's getting very interesting, and I want in! I'd like to
at least make the top 5 in FN; this is embarrassing. 4 records and a
not ranked... yeesh. :)
BTW Nathan, this is (to my relief) no
longer the "beat SnapDragon" topic! Now you've tied me in IS, top is
coming up in FOH, and Ferret owns FN...
Challenge Mode didn't
really grab me when I first tried it, but it's amazing how much fun
it is once you become decent!
Posted by redpichead - 2/28/2002 8:31:43 PM
All right, Snapdragons in the competition. Now I have to try even harder to get in the 400's! Ferret I'm still stuck with 375. How are you doing? You too Nathan I haven't heard that much from you either. Well this should be interesting all four of us doggin' it out for #1. Well good Luck to all of ya!
Posted by Ferret5317 - 2/28/2002 8:36:20 PM
To be honest, redpichead, I too have been quite
attached to Sonic Adventure 2. I play Pikmin usually for an hour or
so each night, but I have been getting a lot of progress in Sonic so
I kinda have to choose between the two. I won't be dropping out of
the competition, however. As it seems, I only really started back up
because my Forest Navel score was being threatened. And it seems to
be getting worse... So I'll continue to strive for #1
:)

ARGH!
Still trying for that
friggin' 264 on IS. Tonight I did my best play-wise so far: I had
everything collected and in the right place, except for the yellow 5
from the red-flower ramp, which was being carried by 10 yellows and
was halfway between the red and yellow onions when time ran out.
Score: 259. 261 remains my best.
I think it's still a matter
of timing the first third or so for me. You clearly have to get back
to the blue 20 as quickly as you can, which means leaving some stuff
in easy range - if you grab everything down below, you just don't
have time. Trying to figure out what to leave is still the part I'm
working on.
Grah!
IT WILL BE MINE!

I haven't broken any of my scores on Forest
Navel yet but I thought I'd post anyway just to let you guys know
I'm still alive. Tomato, it probably won't help much if I tell you
this but on both of my 273's I cleared out the entire main area
before even stepping on the log. But Pikmin is a very personal game.
What I mean is that certain advice from other Pikmin-players can be
beneficial but no two gamers seem to be able to achieve the same
scores using the same technique. I'm sure you've all noticed this.
When you read the posts you take and apply some of the information
and abandon the rest. So I really don't have any advice except
keep at it. Scientist, welcome to the exciting yet anal as

I left pretty
much all the same pellets as Ferret did in his 394 run. I am not
even going to attempt to get the yellow and red 20's by the water
until I have thoroughly mastered the level. However, I need to start
working the blue 20 in the water into my routine as well as making
sure to pick up all the ones and fives (especially the ones near the
onions). I also missed the yellow 10 in the water pools by the
onion. I'm still kicking myself about that. Anyway, it's your move
now, redpichead.

I'm sorry to say that...........I have the New
High Score!
Forest Navel- 397!
I still can't
believe it! I had a chance to add another 20 on that score
but..look. Theres a blue in the water where you build that bridge. I
accidentally threw to many blues on the yellow 20 so I had 19 blues.
Man! I didn't think it was going to be a good run either. Now I see
that it is possible to get a perfect score. I'm still catching my
breath! Well Good Luck!

Hey all.
First off I want to join Nathan
and I'm sure the rest of you in welcoming Scientist to our
tight-knit little community. We may not have as many folks here as
the Final Fantasy boards, but we feel like we know each other here.
Scientist, if you've never tried Challenge Mode, get ready for one
addictive and fun ride! It's not uncommon for us to stay on one
level for months in search of that elusive perfect run (of
which, to my knowledge, there have only been two). And some people
say this game has no replay value! Sheeeesh.
Nathan, I'm sure
this was just a simple oversight, but redpichead clearly reports a
Distant Spring score of 425 in his post on the bottom of page 23,
putting him at number two in the DS rankings. I just walked over to
the TV and verified it.
Speaking of redpic, I know the kid
pretty well, being a parental unit of his and all. I did not see his
397 Forest Navel run (although I did see the score itself in the top
five scores screen), but I had the pleasure of witnessing a
subsequent FN run today after I arrived home from work. I gotta tell
you, the kid's good. Very efficient, and yet I could still spot
little refinements that would improve his strat. He finished with a
very good score, a 379, but the amazing thing is that he had
35 points worth of pellets on the way to the onions as time
ran out! And I'm not talking about
way-on-the-other-side-of-the-level on the way. I'm talking about
on-the-onion-platform on the way, or almost that far. He was, I'd
say, 10-15 seconds away from a 414. Truly a spectacular run, and yet
he made easily correctable mistakes. Didn't I warn you about him,
Ferret? (By the way, I promise to teach him how to turn off the
bold in his messages.)
As for me, I'm still on FOH and
my high is still 519. I managed a 518 recently, but I'm still
struggling with the technique of blowing away the bad guys with bomb
rocks. It just doesn't work consistently for me yet. If I can ever
get that down, I'm confident I can sweep the level clean. Well
that's about it for this report. Good luck to all you Piksters out
there, as this competition is really starting to heat up! Happy
plucking.

Forest Navel - 397
Now that
is frustrating. I'm relieved to finally be sharing the top spot
after so much long, hard, concentrated effort, but 400 would have
been nice. Now, I'm a little angry with myself because I missed the
red 10-pellet by the entrance to the Beady Long Legs' lair. This is
definitely one of the easiest tens to nab, and for the (I think)
first time ever I missed it. I had about 15 seconds left to grab it
but couldn't because all the passing pellets had pushed it over to
the ledge so that when I tried to put Pikmin on it they just fell
over the side and commenced getting high off the grass below. I only
missed two 20's: the blue in the water and the yellow next to the
water (where you have to build the bridge to get it). I missed four
10's: The yellow in the pools near the onion (you have to have blues
pull it out of there - too time-consuming usually), the yellow in
the water by the bottle (again, same problem), the blue in the clam
area and the easy easy easy aforementioned red one. I really
wish I would've broken 400. But Ferret is pissed off enough as it
is.

I must have done a dozen IS runs last night and
nearly every one of them ended with a score in the 240s and me
saying "what the hell did I do wrong?"
This is maddening. If
I had 10 more seconds, I'd be at 264. Just have to keep squeezing
the early phases down, I guess, but it's getting hard to see where I
can shave seconds at this point.
On a recent run I was in
good shape, but got back to the middle after the water-hole run and
saw the yellow 20 still stuck up on the log with 19 yellows on it. I
angrily ran up to the other side of the hill by the waterhole exit
and flung some 20s at it, and to my surprise they reached! It was
way too late to make it back in time, but I tried another game where
I got the yellow 20 that way, from the inside near the red 20
instead of from up on the log. The trouble is that it takes a long
time to get back, and it kind of blocks up the whole path to the log
area for a while, so I'm not sure it could be part of a viable
strategy... but it was interesting.
More today!

Hello everyone.
I have been following the
Challenge Mode scoring so far and it has been quite exciting. I have
been swamped with work, school, and what not recently so I have had
virtually no time to play. However, I feel that I have a little
difficulty on Challenge Mode. Especially on IS. I only have a 186
right now which seems pathetic compared to everyone here. Oh well, I
guess I'll keep practicing like Tomato is.
I do have a
question though: Do you dismiss your Pikmin and then select the
color group you want? Or is there an easier, less time consuming
method. Because I hate it when idle Pikmin decide to grab a pellet
that isn't their color or help and passing group. If you could give
me any tips it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your
help in advance

Square, the quickest and most efficient way to assign Pikmin to the correct pellets is to hold down the A button. When you have a group of Pikmin in your command you can walk into the group and throw one. But if you hold down the A button you will hold the Pikmin above your head and all of the colors will arrange themselves behind you. This way you can just run into your pack and easily select the color you need. It is MUCH more effective because you don't have to worry about your idle Pikmin grabbing pellets around them. The only times I use the X button are when I need to use blues to retrieve something in water (or reds when there is fire). Other than that I just hold A. SnapDragon has already answered this question in the earlier postings on this thread. Anyway, hope that helps!

But i hate
the impact site, no enemies cept that ugly damn breadbug.
Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 3/3/2002 11:27:02 AM
I am officially upset. And aggravated. And distressed. And upset....wait I already said upset. Officially upset. My friend Dave told me that he has hit the flint beetle in Impact Site enough to get that coveted extra 5-pellet. I have yet to do this. So I'm back on the Impact Site for a while, hope renewed, trying to yank down the mighty 278. In my third try back on the level I got my third 273 but it holds no more joy for me (as ingrateful as that may sound). I am going to keep at it, taking advantage of those rare times when the flint beetle gets himself trapped against the box. To make matters worse, when I watch my taped 273 I notice that the beetle had not yet burrowed into the ground after I had hit him 6 times. But I was so excited about taping a 273 that I ignored him and let him run around. Curses! Anyway, I want to be numero uno. Soon-o.
Posted by SnapDragon - 3/3/2002 12:13:44 PM
Well, it literally took me all day yesterday,
but it was worth it. I'm finally in the running with a decent Forest
Navel strategy.
Forest Navel - 414
I'm the
first person to break 400. Yay! :) And coincidentally, I improved my
previous score by exactly 100.
My current strategy has a
limit of 422. I didn't have enough blues for the 5 in the far pond,
I drowned one Pikmin while getting the pearl, and 2 others
disappeared into the aether somehow. I really don't know how I'd
improve on 422, though. A perfect score on the level still seems
utterly impossible. Pity!
Nathan, I really hope you don't get
278! As you could tell from my video, I hate that chaotic Flint
Beetle (especially trying to hit it while preventing your Pikmin
from carrying off various pellets). What would be even worse is the
likely case of executing an imperfect run where the Flint Beetle
finally, finally works, and ending up with something like 275 or
276. Then nobody would be happy. :)
Posted by Ferret5317 - 3/3/2002 5:39:46 PM
Oh, good grief... Did you manage to get that on
tape, SnapDragon? Seeing your run may be my only reconcile from
being #4 on the list for that level. I'm sure as hell not going to
give up though, but damn!
I mean, damn!!!
Good job by
the way, not that I didn't think you could do it. But I didn't think
that even you would catch up that fast, talk about
dedication!

The Impact Site - 272
This is really
irritating... I took my previous high score (Three occurrences of
247) and tried to turn it around and max out the Impact Site. It
took me 3 (Count 'em, THREE) tries to achieve a 272, which was great
because the only error I made was allowing one of the Flint Beetles
pellets to return to the wrong onion.
So, here I am, after 2
hours I still cannot get 273... Why? Because of the DAMNED EVIL
FLINT BEETLE!@#%
Every single time, he runs up the bridge..
Or back into the fire... And last time I got all the pellets from
him just fine but guess what? He pushed the red 20 into the wall
just far enough so I couldn't get it will all the reds that I had
with me.. That little PoS bastard son of a... ARG you get the
point... I *HATE* Flint Beetles... Especially THIS
one!

Ohh man this is irritating! I can't seem to get
past my high score. Congratulations on the 272 in IS Ferret. Just
one more Ferret and you'll have a satisfying 273. Keep trying. And
you SnapDragon, first to break 400 (grrrr!). That's awesome, I hope
you can see that it is possible to achieve a perfect score now. Well
I'm off.
Good Luck
Posted by SnapDragon - 3/4/2002 10:30:09 AM
Ferret: Well, I was indeed very far behind
strategy-wise. For quite a while I was struggling just to break 300,
and didn't really have any hopes of beating your score. Like I said,
I spent an entire day just playing that level. So I wouldn't really
call it catching up "fast". Hehe.
And 3 tries to get 272?
LOL, that's nuts. But now that you're among the IS elite, you're
learning just how annoying it can be to go for perfect. :( Well, for
me anyhow. Nathan doesn't seem to complain so much!
redpic:
As I said in my post, I certainly DON'T think a perfect Forest Navel
score is achievable! Time is extremely tight just for my current
strategy, and just carrying those far 60 pellets back would take
another quarter day at least. Nuh-uh.
Posted by SnapDragon - 3/4/2002 10:36:33 AM
Oh, I almost forgot. Sorry, I wasn't able to
tape my 414. And anyway, the gaming movies site is now toast, so you
wouldn't be able to download the movie. :( Although I suppose I
could still send movies to tgeek.
Maybe I'll try to tape
another run sometime (so all you vultures can steal my strats :).
There's still room for improvement in my current strategy, so it
would be worth it. And I'm trying to work out some way to fit
another 20 pellet in, but so far I just can't see it
happening.

Heh, and I realize that in the above post I used the British spelling realise. That doesn't exactly cut it for a proper American English student.

264
WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I didn't
really have any special inspiration for this round - I spent a lot
of time pounding on it this weekend with no success, and just
thought I'd try a round or two. My first round was a 257, which was
better than I usually do. Second round I thought I had the perfecto
with tons of time left - the countdown hadn't started yet and I had
everything back, or so I thought. Turns out I forgot the blue 1 in
the water way back up top, and one of the red 1s near the
firespout-mountain.
On my third try I mostly tried the same
thing, hustling as much as I could. A few screw-ups on the log cost
me time, and I missed a yellow 1 on the log that I had to go back
for after setting the blue 20 on its way. I cleared out the flowers
by the blue 5 / yellow mountain area first since I always have
trouble making the pikmin wait there while I run the reds into the
firespout area, then ran the 5s in as the countdown started. They
just barely all made it back before time ran
out.
So... I certainly took the long route up this
mountain! And now that I'm here with a formerly-great score, Nathan
puts up 273s on his high score board the way I used to put up
999,975s on Defender at my local arcade, and people are talking
about the possibility of a 278. My 264 doesn't sound as impressive
as it would have a few weeks back. Ah well. It's still my first
perfect run - got everything, and to where it had to go.
Sweet!
Now the question is: pursue it and try for higher via
the flint beetle, or move onto another level?

Go for the Flint Beetle! YOU TOO, must feel the
suffering and humiliation that comes along with trying to get a
perfect run! It would be SO unfair for you to just give up at 264! I
won't allow it! GET THAT EVIL, HORRID FLINT BEETLE!
*huff*
*puff*
*fizzle*

I'm not a figment. I'm a pigment. Blue usually,
but sometimes red, green or some other color.

I'm just a
pigment of your imagination.

If needed I can supply I picture of my score, it
won't be great but I can show you if you really need. Please let me
know if you do not believe me.

OK, did another 264 tonight, much cleaner
than my first - finished with the counter at 6. It's such a thrill
to head into the last minute knowing you're on a perfect run and
you've just got to dot the i's and cross the t's.
I haven't
tried messing with the flint beetle yet. I think I need to be able
to do a 264 and end before the timer starts before I'd really have
time to muck around with him. I will try, though!
Also got a
389 on Forest of Hope, which I'm starting to play with. I
actually had a red 20 right under the onion when the level ended, I
couldn't believe it didn't count it. The pikmins had let go of it
and it was quivering. Thought I'd broken 400. Ah well.
Seems
getting both pearls is pretty key here, and I'm just beginning to
learn the sprawl and how on earth to manage the trips to and from
the baddies.
Gotta say, though, I'm still totally hooked on
Impact Site. Such a rush to finally be getting on top of it! You get
that Tetris-like euphoria when you're flinging pikmins left and
right at 1s and 5s, planning your steps as you go and glancing at
the timer. What a great game. I could spend the rest of the year
just playing this, no doubt.

The Impact Site - 270
Did one
lunchtime run and decided to go for the flint beetle. Only got a 1
and a 5 out of him (does that seem right? Thought he dropped two 1s
before the 5. Maybe not. First time I've tried it.) One yellow died
bombing the wall but I decided to continue since I had gotten the
beetle, and wound up with a 270. Sha-weeet!!
So if I had
gotten the extra pellet and not nuked my yellow, I would have had a
273. Now that I've been this close, of course, I have no choice but
to continue until I get a 273. Gah.

Wow, I suck.
After over a month break
from Pikmin, I am back into the groove and I will attempt to best
you all at Challenge Mode.
I probably won't, but oh
well.
Go me.

Tomato, congratulations on your 270 (and 264)! You sound like you've got the level down so I'll be expecting that 273 from you very soon. And Ferret, c'mon man. What's all this 272 crap? Maybe you should try the sleep deprivation gaming technique we spoke of. You should have that score by now. God does not seem just under such hideous circumstances as those which you find yourself in. Grace and hope be with you, my son. Mastershay, you're going to have to give us some proof of that Distant Spring score. Not necessarily proof in the form of a video, .jpg or .gif file, but at least some written description on how you allegedly "achieved" such a feat. We're a pretty tight-knit crew around here and we don't take well to strangers comin' in making monosyllabic claims of supremacy.
