These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

OK, the vid is ready!
Ahlyis, I've
emailed you with its address; please let me know if you have any
problems getting it. I didn't compress it because it takes forever
and movies hardly compress at all; it's 89.3 megs.
Thanks in

there!

Sorry guys! Didn't mean to confuse things. I
just mailed Ferret a URL, and he will hopefully be able to share it
with y'all. I've put it on my server, but like I said to him, it
costs me about $2 in bandwidth for every download, so I really can't
afford to have people stampeding there. Ferret's offer to help
distribute it is welcome and appreciated, and Ahylis, if you're out
there and can still help, that would be great too!
I may be
able to put it on FilePlanet, if they'd accept it, although I'd
probably want to polish the actual video production of it a little
more before kicking it out to the whole wide world. Sounds like it
takes a few weeks for it to work its way into the rotation
there.
Hope you guys can get to it soon! Looking forward to
hearing what you think.

Too bad I can't download it. The problem is, my
computer thinks it should stream the video. It will NEVER work
unless you rename the file. .zip would allow me to download it most
likely. (Unless I can figure out a way to prevent my browser from
automatically streaming the file)

not till tonight. I took the day off to move. I didn't expect you to

Bear with me, it's going to be very hectic today and I simply can't

Ouch, top, you really spooked me. I didn't
realize how close you were. If FOH is going to have to end up with a
perfect score, then I REALLY want to be the first to do it! That was
the impetus I needed to sit down and finally do some hard-core
Pikmin challengage. :)
It is with great pleasure, and no
small amount of relief, that I announce the third (and quite
possibly last) perfect level on this board:
Forest Of Hope -
569!!!
Woohoo! You should have seen me dancing around the

Folks,
Ferret downloaded my vid and said
QuickTime crashed on him about halfway through. I might want to take
another pass at it and try some different options to see if I can
squeeze it down any further anyway, so I'll try to throw together a
new version this weekend and make it available.
Too bad you
guys can't see the clean DV version - looks gorgeous, and weighs in
at a paltry 2.5 gigs. :P
Ah well.
Posted by SnapDragon - 3/30/2002 3:44:48 PM
Hee hee... poor top. Looks like I had the
desired effect on you. I feel evil. :) Well, if it weren't for your
amazing skill, I never would have been forced into going for a
perfect score. I can't imagine how you've managed it without the
bomb-rock trick. I hope there are no hard feelings, and I expect to
see a 569 from you shortly!
Forest Navel - 439
Ok,
I am DONE with this bloody level. I've fine-tuned and practiced and
fine-tuned and practiced some more, until FINALLY my 442 strat
finished (barely) in time. There is absolutely no way I can see to
beat 442. I have grown to loathe this level, and I am not willing to
spend another 6 hours getting 3 more points (if I'm lucky). So, that
will have to suffice for n... uh, forever. :) And I'm exhausted, so
Distant Spring can wait a while.
Tomato: Yeah, I've been
taping my most recent runs. But as I said before, I'm no longer
interested in going through the incredible hassle of capturing yet
more videos just so people can steal my strats. I am looking forward
to seeing your 278, though... I'm really glad someone other than me
is finally providing vids.
Posted by TomatoMan - 3/30/2002 4:04:47 PM
A quick update on the IS vid situation: I've
been monkeying with it today a bit, and I couldn't resist adding a
little opening flourish and closing propz/credits roll. It added a
few megs, but so it goes.
I'm doing a 30fps, high-quality
Sorensen render right now that's likely to be gigantic -
could be 200 or even 250 megs, I won't know until it's finished.
Then I'll do a smaller render at lower res that will hopefully come
in way less than that. I just felt that the quality of the 90-meg
renders I was doing was too low to justify that kind of size, so I
figured if it's going to be big, then I'm going to do whatever it
takes to make sure it looks as nice as I can manage.
Ferret
and Ahlyis, I don't know if either of you would be willing to carry
something that big, if my guess is correct. Later tonight I'll know.
If it comes out well, I may submit it to FilePlanet to see if
they'll carry it, but even if they do it will probably take a few
weeks to appear.
Snap: I'm happy to be producing vids, I just
wish I had a speck of talent somewhere other than IS to be producing
them with! :) You're the first credit on my propz roll, of
course.
Maybe later in the year you'd be willing to release
your vids, as a historical archive, once people stop competing? I
think your perfected runs deserve to be etched into steel at some
point.

OK, the videos are ready. I'll be sending Ferret

they'll be able to share them with all of you that want
them.
The lo-res version is 51 megs, 240x180, 15fps. It looks
better than I expected it to, you can certainly see what's going
on.
The hi-res version is 225 megs (!), 320x240, 30fps. It
looks great. If you can spare the bandwidth, this is a keeper. The
30fps makes it very fluid and pleasant to watch.
Hope you all
can get your hands on them soon, looking forward to

Sorry Ferret, but I'm posting here for two
reasons.
1) The thread you reference doesn't exist anymore.
2)
(and more importantly) I want these links on a thread which won't
live too long. Since this is near 500, I know it won't linger for
months to come.
I've posted the low-res video and tested that
it is available through the firewall. I'm getting the Hi-res one
from Tomato right now and will post it once it finishes downloading.
Should be within 2 hours of this message.
PLEASE do not
stream these files. Please only download them once. Save the files
to your hard drive for future viewing. Please do not post these
links ANYWHERE.
The best method is probably from a command
prompt. Do this (on a Windows system, use whatever FTP client you
want on other O/S's)
Go to
Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.
Change the
directory to wherever you want to store the files to
Enter the
following:
ftp exchange.rational.com
anonymous (in response to
the login)
myemail@wherever.com (please provide your email
address as the password)
cd exchange
cd outgoing
cd
dwood
bin
get IS278L.zip (caps are important, use IS278H.zip
for the hi-res file)
quit
This will pull the zip file to
your machine and you don't have to worry about your browser auto
opening it or anything else.
If you need to use a link, these
should work. Actually, since these are zip files, your browser will
only send it to Winzip (or whatever) if it does automatically open
it. From Winzip, you can just save the files
yourself.
ftp://exchange.rational.com/exchange/outgoing/dwood/IS278L.zip
(for the Low-res file. About
50MB)
ftp://exchange.rational.com/exchange/outgoing/dwood/IS278H.zip
(for the Hi-res file. About 215MB)

Distant Spring - 311
Heh, I'm not
especially proud of that score or anything. But considering that I
got it on my 4th try it becomes rather promising. I wasn't even
trying to spite Emmett (who just got his personal best of 310) but
it just so happens that I crept into 5th on the leader board. I want
to be playing Forest of Hope right now, but my buddy is coming up to
Ohio for a visit later this week and he wants me to wait on FoH
until we can work on it together. And I see his point. It is more
fun with company. Anyway, I fully realize that 311 on DS is a very
unstable score and that it will be kicked off the list in a very
short period of time, but I haven't posted lately so I figured this
would be a good time. Maybe I'll work on the level some more tonight
and see if I can crack 400.
TomatoMan, congratulations. That
is an amazing feat and you must have a steely resolve to fight
through that must frustration. You are right when you say that a
successful fight with the flint beetle occurs only 1/20th of the
time. For every success against that little bastard one must wait
through about 19 utter failures. I would like to be the second
person to achieve the coveted 278 (just as I was the second to
achieve the formerly coveted 273) but I think it will be a long time
before I get up the nerve to begin the quest. I'll be happy for now
just working on the other levels I've
neglected.
Topotheclass, congratulations. Mastering the
Forest of Hope must be a very long process. The level is relatively
easy to memorize, but the different routes one can take through the
level seem to have different capacities for peril. You should find
that little Brutus who carried the pellet to the wrong onion and do
nasty things to him. Et tu, Pikmin?
SnapDragon,
*sigh*, congratulations. You are a super freak. A super
freak.........................you're super freaky.

Okay, I have some new highs. I am just now
noticing how easy some of my scores are and getting new highs every
day. I gave the Distant Spring a break:
FN - 260
I
just now noticed some 10 and 20 pellets in this level and will
improve this score.
FT - 184
Almost a 194 but the
yellow 10 pellet just could not make it in time.
I am now
going back to the Distant Spring (Heh) to get a NEW high score.
Nothing big, just an idea.

Final Trial - 223
TM weasels his
way up to the bottom of another board! :P
This one is
interesting. I think I've got the basic rhythm through the beady
long-legs or whatever, and I can handle him OK, but I hate those
friggin birds - and so I'm not going back there so far. I think that
223 had everything else returned properly, though, so I guess that's
what I have to do next if I'm going to push for (much) higher
scores, other than not lose any pikmins - I always seem to lose a
few fighting beady whosis despite my best efforts.
All this
because I can't for the life of me figure out how to break 450 on
FoH. Given the clumping of scores (way) over 500, there must still
be something huge I'm not getting. I'll keep banging on it, as it
goes.
Posted by Nathan Ian Bowers - 4/2/2002 2:32:58 AM
Distant Spring - 363
Okay, I think
I don't think I'll fall off this ladder anytime soon. I
shudder at the thought of possibly collecting all three
pearls. And there are too many frickin' frogs! I am very good
at killing all types of enemies now but the frogs take a little bit
longer than the other baddies because you have to make certain that
you do not slip up. Those stupid hovering amphibians can kill
countless guys in one fell swoop when you get sloppy. And it just
makes me so angry that there are frogs all around the perimeter of
the level. Oh well, enough complaining about frogs....for
now.
I'll probably work some more on this level tomorrow.
Maybe if I surpass Ferret's 376 he'll start playing DS also.

Distant Spring - 378
That moves me
just past Ferret and into 4th place for Distant Spring. The
thing that really bites is that I had a blue ten-pellet actually
being sucked up as time expired. And it had already disappeared. But
I didn't get credit for it. Oh well.
So far I only have one
pearl worked into my routine. I need to find a way to add another.
But with my current strategy I can yield as many as about 450 Pikmin
if everything goes right. I usually panic at the end when I have
plenty of time left and can't decide where to go for some extra
enemies or pellets.
I need to get over my aquaphobia (is that
a real word? It seems like it should be). I usually stick primarily
to dry land and make only one or two tiny trips into the water. But
there is a plethora of good stuff out in the water. *Nathan
receives bonus points for using plethora in a
sentence*
Anyway, when this board reaches 500 a new
Challenge Mode board will be started by someone I'm sure. And
I'll be there.

Got this
score on my next attempt after that last post. Aaaargh! Just three
more and I would have broken 400 and moved into 3rd place on the
list. I had a pretty ugly mishap with one of the puffstools, though.
He turned about 10 of my Pikmin into nasties and I suffered a
handful of losses because of it. Funny, my high score in Forest
Navel is still 397 too. I don't think I'll be getting stuck in
Distant Spring, however. Expect more posts soon.

By the way, and for posterity: I'm going to say
one last round of thank-yous for all of the nice comments people
have given me about the Impact Site run and video; I'm aware of the
shrinking space left in this very special board and don't want to
take up any more room, but I also don't want to appear ungrateful by
not responding to kind words.
So: to everyone who responded,
and cheered me on along the way: one final thank-you. :) I'm really
glad I was able to (a) do it and (b) tape it and (c) make a vid you
all could see. Making the vid was especially fun and I'm glad people
enjoyed it. I'd like to extend a special thanks to Ferret and Ahlyis
(whose nick I've misspelled about 20 different ways so far) for
their efforts to help me distribute the vid and bear the bandwidth
burden for a bit.
So: cheers, everyone! And now let's

Distant Spring - 402
Looks like
TomatoMan hates me. Hehe, it was a sloppy run. I lost about 5-10
guys during the run and forgot to kill the big Bulborb over by the
yellow onion. But it was enough to put me in third place so that now
I can set my sights on redpichead's 425.
And I must now echo
the words of TomatoMan: I HATE FROGS!
I'm glad Emmit
started playing this level and posting his scores because it has
brought back the competitive spirit here (it seems just a week ago
this was the "Watch TomatoMan Do Things Never Before Thought
Possible" board). The level really is fun, especially compared to
that bloody Forest Navel. Anyway, keep at it guys and good luck!
I'll see you at the summit.

Ok, I'm in...
The Distant Spring -
363
...with a pearl just a few steps away, so the strat
is good for at least a 413. It's a bit tough because redpichead's
got the top five scores on the board, and the worst is 402, so I may
have scored higher than 363 at some point in the past (before this
recent surge in DS interest) and forgotten. Oh well, it's not that
impressive anyway. Better runs to come...
Tomato - I have
been remiss in not posting on your vid. It's a fantastic piece of
work. A near flawless run, sandwiched by a sharp,
professional-looking intro and gracious, props-giving end credits.
Excellent, excellent stuff.

correctly I should have the number 5 spot for sure, beating Ferrets
score of 368, or Nathan's score since he beat his old one. I was so
close to breaking 400 and I know I will. Frogs, are no problem.
Occasionally I'll have a little mishap with one and loose about 4-5
guys, but the strategy Nathan gave me, is a sure bet. And now this
level will become my newest addiction.

er my mistake, Ferret had a 376 sorry man, didn't mean to make you look bad 8-)

I just watched your video too, Tomato! Fantastic
job; I can't imagine how many tries it must have taken you to
finally beat the crap out of that Flint Beetle. And well done with
the capturing... I don't have any video editing software, and after
seeing yours I kind of wish I did. :)
Maybe I'll capture my
FOH 569 vid, since my strategy is basically unchanged. And in
several months, I suppose I'll post FN 439 for posterity (or
whatever), though nobody will care by then. But I'm not doing it in
the near future. It's the only level where my strategy hasn't been
laid bare to everyone, and it would be nice to see people approach
or beat my score with the assurance that they're doing it all
themselves. It's rather frustrating competing in a strategy game
when everything that I do becomes public knowledge immediately,
while everyone else can keep any secrets they want. Your video
excepted, now. :)
It's great to see the rejuvenated interest
in competition - now on Distant Spring, started by Emmit. Keep those
scores coming! Perhaps I'll go back and try to get some sort of
"final" score on that level, like FN. Maybe one of you will have to
beat me to provide incentive... hehe. Good luck!
I didn't
know that topics had a limit of 500 posts. Sigh. It's irking to
think that we're going to have to lose this historic, informative
collection of posts so that 50 more "HOW CAN I BY HRT FRUTZ??/?
(caps)" topics can pop up in the SA2 boards. Damn it. I hate the
GameFAQs boards...
Only 2 more posts left in the topic. This
will probably be my last. Fare thee well, "Challenge Mode Scores?".
:( I guess I'll steal the honour of creating the new official topic
now, since nobody else has done it yet.
At least my rather
unprophetic "I haven't really tried seriously, and probably won't"
opening comment will disappear forever. ;)
