GameFAQs archives
These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

The Final Trial - 299 on
tape.
This a perfect score... no Pikmin lost. It was
extremely annoying to work out the proper strategy and execute it.
This level really wasn't designed to be done without losing Pikmin.
But anyway, it's a beautiful run, and I finished a full clock tick
and a half early. Now I never have to play the level
again.
I've finally captured my 4 new videos, and I'm sending
them to tgeek as I write this. I'll also upload them to MPLe's page.
So you should be able to get them over the weekend.
To recap,
these are the scores to beat (or tie) right now:
Impact
Site - 273 (new video)
Forest of Hope - 563 (new
video)
Forest Navel - 314
Distant Spring - 516
(new video)
Final Trial - 299 (new video)

Snap,
Unbelievable scores! Can't wait to
see the vids.
I'm really struggling on Impact Site now, I'm
having a hard time getting into the 230s and my high is 244. The
timing of the beginning must be what's screwing me up because I
always run out of time before the blues get back, and I have no time
at all to clean out the back area. I think if I could just finish
the first half a tick earlier, I'd be in good shape, but I can't
seem to manage it.

Snap,
Just watched the 273. That's
AWESOME! I don't know if it's possible to do it any better, you
might have created the permanent record for the Pikmin archives.
:)
Unfortunately it doesn't play on my mac the way the 238
did - did you use a different encoding? At least on the OSX player,
it just hangs when you open it. Luckily I had access to a PC
tonight.
Anyway - what an unbelievable run! Made especially
chaotic by the flint beetle in the middle, which looked like it
monkeyed with your plans a little. I have to study your timing more
to see where I'm screwing up. Perfect execution up by the blue 20 -
getting the yellow 5 and red 1 first, then calling the blues back to
get the 20. Was it luck that you had the numbers worked out for the
remaining 1s that perfectly? I sometimes try to head for the 20s
with a 38/31/31 blue/red/yellow range, but it's hard to manage
exactly. Looks like you nailed it.
How much of doing a
"plain" 265 (which I'm still 20 shy of) do you think is luck of
having the right colors when you need them, and how much do you
think is skill? Flint beetle aside, how many 265s do you think you
could do out of 10 or 20 tries?
I'll grab the others and
check them out soon. Thanks for digitizing & posting
them!
Posted by SnapDragon - 2/3/2002 12:22:24 AM
Jeez, where are you getting this 265 from? As
I've stated like 5 times in this topic alone, a perfect score (not
counting the Flint Beetle) is 264. Then on my run I got 2 1s and a 5
from the Flint Beetle, bringing it to 273. I agree that I really
can't see 273 being beaten... you could tell how nuts just hitting
it 5 times was, and you'd have to hit it EIGHT times for another
pellet. Ye gods. So I consider IS and FT my two "perfect"
scores.
Anyway, that said... as you can tell from my movie, I
HATE that stupid Flint Beetle. Chaotic is the word, all right. I
just hit it the 5 times required and then scrambled my Pikmin that
were scattered to the four corners of the earth. Anyway, if I ignore
the Flint Beetle, I could probably get 264 on Impact Site maybe
20-30% of the time? I don't know. I haven't really tried. It's easy
to mess up and have one pellet go to the wrong colour,
though.
I don't explicitly manage the numbers of my Pikmin in
Impact Site (since it takes time). But I always get the same pellets
before I reach 100 (ending with the 3 10s). If the Breadbug drops 2
5s of the same colour, I restart; otherwise, I send the Breadbug to
the unrepresented colour. This always gives me approximately your
38/31/31 distribution, give or take a few. With this distribution, I
find I don't usually have much trouble (although I've occasionally
run out of yellow Pikmin at the end).
By the way, at the
beginning, that's not at all how I normally handle the Breadbug. :)
He went for an unexpected pellet, and I improvised.
I'm
surprised the movie doesn't work on your Mac...? I encoded it
exactly the same way as the previous ones.
Posted by TomatoMan - 2/3/2002 9:42:29 AM
Mea culpa on the 264 - someone said 265 at one
point somewhere and it stuck in my head for some reason. I'm far
enough from it that it hasn't worked its way into my reality
yet.
I'm surprised the movie doesn't work on your Mac...?
I encoded it exactly the same way as the previous
ones.
Hm. Odd. Well, I'll tinker with it some
more.
Does the flint beetle always drop in the same pattern -
one, one, five, (...one)?

After MANY tries, I've finally managed to crack
260. Only 4 away from a perfect sans-flint-beetle 264.
I
tried messing with the flint beetle after watching Snap's video, but
it ate up so much time I fell way behind. Once I nail a 264, I'll
see if I can improve on it by adding some flint beetle
pellets.
Snap, I saw your Final Trial run. Ingenious how you
handled the big bird, man. To not lose a single pikmin on that
level, amazing.

The Forest Navel - 324
I just did this
tonight after an eager run of the Forest Navel - I look forward to
your competition, SnapDragon! As well as anyone else willing to best
the score.
I guess it is fair to include a tip: I don't know
if this is the best way to do this, as I do it this way nearly every
time... But I always go for the ones around the long bridge and the
pearl as soon as I get 100 Pikmin. I somehow thought that going
there with less would be more time efficient, but even if I already
have 100 sprouted, going there with only 63 and getting back to the
onions for more Pikmin definitely took up too much time. Carry them
with you to make things easier once you attach all your Pikmin to
their respective parts.

The Forest Navel - 331
I would gotten
everything except for the ones down by the pearl. Unfortunately, I
stupidly allowed a red 20 pellet to be absorbed by the blue onion
(ouch!) and I missed one of the small red 5's that was down by the
water. I had plenty of time leftover by then and if I would have
just remembered I could have easily saved that red 20 because I was
within a half a second of calling the Pikmin away from it when it
entered.

The Forest Navel - 334
I must have
seriously miscounted when I added up the totals for Pikmin in this
level. I believe 334 is very close to the actual amount in the
entire level excluding the pellets by the long bridge and the pearl
(Which add up to 110, btw). I'll work on making sure I get every one
(I think I missed a couple 5's... They're so spread out it's easy to
forget) since doing 334 really isn't a problem
anymore.

After "maxing out" at 260 on Impact Site, I've
pretty much turned my attention to Forest of Hope. I've only run it
about 10 times, and my current high is 376. Maybe I'll go back and
try for that "elusive" 264 on IS, but man, I tried that sucker a
gajillion times, and I can only take so much failure.
Forest
Navel is an interesting one though. I had always assumed that a
"perfect" score was impossible. It's just sooo expansive, and
there's just not enough time. But Ferret, you mentioned that you

Wow. I didn't realize I was doing so well on Forest of Hope. It's every bit as addicting as Impact Site (you should give it a try TomatoMan!), but in a different way. Anyhow, I've played it about 25 times now, and my current best score is 459. Nothing like a little competition. My 14-year-old stepson Jacob (not on these boards) is right on my tail at 456.
Posted by TomatoMan - 2/14/2002 12:48:51 PM
Heh, I plan to move on to other levels as soon
as I break 260 on Impact Site, top. :)
I took a
week-and-a-half layoff from the cube with a recent work crunch and
total frustration - I was having a hard time getting over 210 on
Impact Site, even though I felt like I was doing everything right.
Then, late last night, I plugged it in and did one quick game, and
beat my high score by 1 (245). Wacky.
The only thing I did
differently was *not* get the blue 5 and the red 1 up by the fire
spout in my early, pre-20's round of collections. I can't imagine
how that alone would make such a difference, there must have been
others, but for only the second time I had every pellet in motion
and the stuff from the blue 20 area made it back in time.
I
feel like I'm close to getting this level. I've played a
little bit on forest of hope, and been in the high 300s, but a very
long way from having everything optimized or even seeing everything
that's there. I look forward to playing it and the other levels
(which I haven't even tried yet), but I want to master Impact Site
first.
Onwards! I'm still alive! :)

It's weird. I used to play Impact Site endlessly
(as it is endlessly addicting), and I only seemed to improve ever so
slowly. I was stuck in the 250s for a VERY long time before I
finally managed to crack 260. Then I went and played the other
levels, not nearly as much as I used to play IS, but enough I think.
It turns out that playing the other levels (mostly FOH and FN) have
had the effect of improving my performance in IS! My current Impact
Site high score, which I just got, is 263, just one away from
the "perfect" 264.
It may not seem like that much better
than my old high score, but there's a big difference. Before, I used
to be super-pressed for time at the end of my run, frantically
running around trying to get everything to make it back in time. But
now, it's like I'm totally done and there's plenty of time left for
me to stroll around. I think a 264 now is not only makeable, but
inevitable, and soon I will be making an assault on the true
"perfect" score (which includes the flint beetle's generous gifts),
Snapdragon's 273!
Posted by TomatoMan - 2/18/2002 9:04:35 AM
I wish I had a sense of where my timing was off
on IS. My best guess at this point is that I'm not doing the right
rhythm of picking and pellet-chasing in the first half. Leaving the
blue 5 by the fire spout does seem to make a big difference in terms
of time, but I can't figure out why because it's such a short
trip.
At this point I'm typically in the countdown by the
time I get back from the blue 20 and am trying to collect pellets by
the fire-spout and stump in the back areas. In a couple of games,
I've managed to have everything enroute to the right place, but run
out of time long before they got there. 245 is still my
high.
If it takes me all year, I will do a perfect
run! :P
Posted by topotheclass - 2/18/2002 9:51:23 AM
Tomato, I think a pretty good indication is
where you are at at halftime. Typically on my best runs, by noon
I've:
1) Gotten the three 10s
2) Picked the starting area
clean of the 1s, 5s, and flowers, except for the "out of the way"
area with the fives, although it's not a big deal to swing by and
pick up the blue 5 real quick. I usually leave the yellow 5 and the
red 5 past the fire spout (and their accompanying 1s) for
last.
3) Already visited the area by the ramp to grab the pellets
from the flowers (taking care NOT to incite the flint beetle). I
also grab a couple of bomb rocks at this time.
4) Made my way
back and begun mad-plucking in preparation for my big rush up the
ramp.
By the time the noon bell rings, I'm usually just back
from the ramp area, plucking away at yellows. By the time I've got
all the sprouts plucked and made my way back toward the ramp, I'm
usually a little less than one "bubble" past noon. Once you're up
past the ramp, two things are most crucial:
1) Your efficiency in
gathering the 14 "1" pellets in the platform area (of course, don't
throw more than the minimum 20 fellas on the big pellets), and
2)
Your ratio of Pikmin. You need blues more than any other, but if you
have too few of the reds or yellows, you'll have a hard time
also.
Also, near the end when you go back for the "out of the
way" pellets, always go for the red 5 first. It's got a lot further
to go to get home than the yellow 5 on the other side. Of course by
this time you're probably going to be pressed for time, so double up
as much as you can on all the pellets in the area.
Posted by TomatoMan - 2/18/2002 12:09:27 PM
Thanks for the (tip-top) tips, top.
:)
One thing I've noticed recently is that you can, right at
the start, fling two yellows up the stump area below the yellow 5 at
the red and blue 1s, and they'll bring them down to where you can
whistle them and have a red and blue take them the rest of the way.
I'm not sure this is worth the extra time - it's really just a few
seconds, but maybe more work with the extra 1s to deal with at the
start.
Do you get the changing flowers up there by the blue 5
before going on your ramp run?
I've adopted Snap's policy of
restarting if the breadbug drops two 5's of the same color, and I
usually want to have 100 picked and heading up the ramp by a tick
after noon. It's usually pretty close, and I sometimes have trouble
with crowd management on the 1s up by the gate - keeping them
carried by 1 each and not having another one grab on when I'm
changing colors. Maybe I need to try to bunch them against the back
wall so the 1s don't go through the crowd? Hm.
The blue 20
often doesn't make it back in time if I just have 20 unflowered
pikmins on it. I don't know if flowered ones carry the 20s faster,
do you have any sense of that?
