These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

From SnapDragon's introduction to the last
Challenge Mode topic:
"Anyone is welcome to post their scores
here and get some recognition, even if they're not in the running
for the high-score charts. Don't be intimidated by the scores here;
many of us have played each individual level hundreds of times, and
there's no shame in not reaching that level of hardcoreness.
:)"
All scores in the top three spots need to be verified by
a screenshot or a detailed walkthrough. Unverified scores will be
noted with an asterisk.
Please post your scores in
bold.

ARGH! I've been bumped off the top ten totals

Gonna have to pull that FN score up, I guess. Just

Grenade, I'm not sure we want to open up a can
of worms about accepting scores without asterisks if the person
claims to have followed a posted strat. It's not that I don't
believe you. But if we accept your scores just based on that, then
we'll have to accept anyone's. We already know there are plenty out
there who lie about their scores.
But if the consensus is to
accept that sort of verification, then remove the asterisk from my
IS score. I've discussed before how I went about getting 264. The
278 is simply a matter of hitting the flint beetle enough
times.
I would have posted a screen shot long ago as I did
for some other things in the past, but my digital camera has gone
missing. No idea what happened to it. That and I still don't have
that last 569 on FoH! :-(

Just posting in here, since this pertains to the
challenge mode vids.
Mike's 482 is done. The lo-res version
is about 130mb, the hi-res one is 380 mb. I expect the Distant
Spring vids to be about 20% larger. It'll take a little time for me
to get them to Ahlyis, but I'd guess that by early in the week
they'll be available for download, thanks to Ahlyis.
As I
said in the DVD thread, the quality of these vids isn't great:
they're both too bright and have a washed-out appearance at times,
but I couldn't make it any better with the adjustments I was able to
try. I did at least manage to get the audio synced, so the sound
isn't off anymore. That was annoying. Anyway, they're perfectly
watchable and what you're looking at will make you forget the so-so
quality. :)
The 482 is just unbelievable. The
micro-management of time and count is really something to see. There
are so many points where mike has, say, 6 in tow, and you're
wondering what he's doing, and then he picks up 4 somewhere and pops
them on a 10 and you go "oh." Every single pikmin is managed in a
planned fashion throughout the whole thing. He's still at 372 when
the countdown warning starts, and still has to fetch a yellow 20
outside the starting ring, and the blue 5 and yellow 5 nearby, and
you wonder how on earth there's going to be time to get it all in.
And then at about 4 left on the counter, a blue 5 and yellow 10
headed in opposite directions smack into each other straight on and
stick, and you think "oh, no, there's no time to sort it out," but
then another blue 5 hits them from behind and breaks it up and they
get to their onions safely before time expires. And you realize
that's it, there's nothing left. He got everything.
Just
amazing.
I'll give a little rundown on the 620 when the
rendering finishes.
Just wondering, Mike: have you pulled any
more 482s, or is that the only one?

OK, the 620s are done. Lo-res is 180mb, hi-res
is (gulp) 530mb. They're almost 24 minutes long.
You'll just
have to watch this run. Sure, Mike has pretty good luck with frogs
dropping blue 5s, but you'd expect that of a high-score run. What's
most amazing to me here is how handily he beats the frogs - I think
he had one MD in the entire level. And also how cool he his when the
"hurry up" warning comes - like he's got all the time in the world
to leave some unsorted pellets, head out and make another gathering
run, then sort the stragglers at the end. He runs out of things to
collect with 4 on the counter.
You can see that this could be
topped with LOTS of luck - I mean, if all the frogs drop blue, you
could squeeze another 8-10 out, maybe, if you do everything else
perfectly. So yes, there's a chance that this score could be
improved, but probably not by a great deal. It didn't seem to me
like Mike missed very much.
I'll zip the movies tomorrow
(which will save a tiny amount of space), and get them uploading -
Ahlyis, drop me a line when you're ready. It will probably take most
of a day for me to upload them with my slow outbound cable modem
speed, it's over a gig total. But you should all be looking and
drooling at them in a couple of days.

I feel your pain, Superstein. The best I've done
is tie my highest the last few days. MD's don't frustrate me as much
as mamuta. Countless great starts have been squashed by mamuta, and
as a result when I do get past him I get tight and make some stupid
mistakes.

I always save the best for last, th mamuta that

But then I have no time to collect anything else. To
you Mamuta killing pros:
How hard, on a scale from 1 to 10, is
it to kill the Mamuta squishy free with 100 flowered Pikmin?

I don't know why I'm giving YOU advice, Stein.
:) But he usually doesn't give me much trouble. Swarm him hard.
Another tactic I use is to get next to one of his arms so he can hit
ME instead of the pikmin. He'll usually take the bait. I can climb
out of the ground while the pikmin deck him.
Ahlyis has the
FN and DS vids, BTW, and he'll be posting them as soon as his work
schedule allows. Won't be long.

How hard, on a scale from 1 to 10, is it to
kill the Mamuta squishy free with 100 flowered
Pikmin?
about 2, just swarm him with all your pikmin and
make olimar stand to the side of mamuta. mamuta should attack olimar
and not your pikmin, meaning a safe kill 90% of the time.
tm,
i have not got another 482, i dont want to have to go through that

By the way, I've figured out the max for DS.
Read this if you dare.
15 at the landing site = 15
1 and 5
pellets near the landing site = 42
8 stray 10 pellets = 122
6
pellet posies = 134
3 stray 1 pellets = 140
19 dwarf bulborbs
= 216
4 spotty bulborbs = 264
3 fiery blowhogs = 285
10
yellow wollywogs = 355
10 5 pellets from yellow wollywogs =
405
9 5 pellets from puffy blowhogs = 450
2 puffstools =
510
3 pearly clamclamps = 660
2 stray 20 pellets =
700
pellets from flint beetle = 721 (if you hit him
enough)
So the potential maximum for DS is 721 . Good
luck breaking 700
guys!

How do you figure 21 Pikmin from flint beetles?
A flint beetle can potentially give you two 5 pellets and two 1
pellets, for a total of 14 Pikmin from a flint beetle.

Actually, itâs 752. You get 8 points for fiery
blowhogs and wollywogs (13 total), 14 is the max out of each flint
beetle (2 total) and 15 for mamuta (one), and thereâs only 4 pellet
posies. If anyone can get within 50 points of that I will truly be

I'm glad people are able to get to the vids. It
took a lot of work to create them, what with the transatlantic

would go wrong somewhere and we'd lose the only evidence of the only

Distant Spring Maximum - My
calculation:
Start - 15
1-pellets at landing site - 6 x 2
= 12 (tot. 27)
5-pellets at landing site - 3 x 5 = 15 (tot.
42)
10-pellets - 8 x 10 = 80 (tot. 122)
20-pellets - 2 x 20 =
40 (tot. 162)
Dwarf Bulborbs - 21 x 4 = 84 (tot. 246)
Spotty
Bulborbs - 4 x 12 = 48 (tot. 294)
Pearly Clamclamps - 3 x 50 =
150 (tot. 444)
Puffy Blowhogs' 5-pellets - 3 x 3 x 5 = 45 (tot.
499)
Fiery Blowhogs - 3 x 8 = 24 (tot. 523)
Wollywogs (bodies)
- 10 x 8 = 80 (tot. 603)
Wollywogs (5-pellets) - 10 x 5 = 50
(tot. 653)
Puffstools - 2 x 30 = 60 (tot. 713)
Mamuta - 15
(tot. 728)
Additional 1-pellets in blowhog pearl area - 3 x 2 = 6
(tot. 734)
Pellet Posies - 4 x 2 = 8 (tot. 742)
Flint Beetles
- 2 x 14 = 28 (tot. 770)
If my calculations are
correct, this means a maximum Challenge Mode score would
be
278+569+482+770+299 = 2398

I still say itâs 752. There is an addition
error: 444 + 45 = 489, not 499. That gets you down to 760, and I
think thereâs only 19 dwarf bulborbs instead of 21. That gets you
752.
The 19 dwarves:
1 ö By the blue onion
2 ö
Between the bulborb and 1st puffstool
3 ö By the grass patch
4
ö By the yellow 10
5 ö By the fiery blowhog
6 ö Just past the
puffstool
7 thru 9 ö In front of the frog in the small pond
10
ö Near the 2nd puffstool
11 ö Near the entry to the blue 10
12
ö Near the frog guarding the red 10
13 ö On a little island in
the big lake
14 & 15 ö Just past #13
16 ö By the fire
spout in the yellow 20 area
17 thru 19 ö By the yellow
20
I could be wrong, but Iâve combed this board several times
looking for extra points to add to my strat, so Iâm pretty
confident. Also, if memory serves me, Mike and Nathan came up with
752 as well.
Sure would like to post a new high score one of

pikmin, luigis mansion and ssbm to £20 (about $30 or 30 euros), i
thought it was happening in america as well but i could be
wrong.

My mistake, there are only 19 Dwarf Bulborbs. I
must have been counting a triplet somewhere when there was only
one.
So my 770, minus the 10-Pikmin calculation error, minus
the 8 Pikmin you can't get from the Bulborbs that aren't there,
equals 752. The highest possible Pikmin Challenge Mode Score Total
is then 2380.

I found this glitch that could make the maximum
a bit higher.
In IS regular mode I got three yellows out and
hit the flint beetle once. It gave out a yellow one pellet so I put
a yellow on the pellet and it took it back. Anyway, while the two
yellows were grabbing bombs what I thought was the pikmin counter
glitch (the one where it stuffs up the number of pikmin following
you and in the field) and later I went over to the onion and there
was 6 new sprouts. 6 pikmin instead of 2 pikmin. Those 3 yellows
were the only pikmin out. Oh, and Grenade it looks like I just
proved myself wrong in the trivia topic (I said it isn't possible to
exceed 569 in FoH challenge mode).

Beating Mamuta is very easy if you know what
you're doing. Use leaf pikmin instead of flowered ones. You'll get a
better chance of getting none of your pikmin squashed. So overall I
would give it a 3. BTW I have a new DS score thanks to Mamuta.

lol, you put Mike's score in bold and left the
FN title plain! :-)
Flaming Knuckles, a glitch is probably
NOT what happened on IS with your yellows. More likely, your yellow
went and grabbed a couple of yellow 1-pellets near the onion after
returning with the first pellet. There are two posies that start
near the yellow onion. Your lone Pikmin probably knocked them both
down as yellow (by luck) and returned them to the
onion.
That's be my guess as to what happened.
