GameFAQs archives
These are the full, expanded threads from the preserved GameFAQs threads. I had to exercise some wicked Perl voodoo to extract the actual text, bad HTML and all, from the archives provided by RockMFR 5 (and DistantSpring54), and patch up the code so it's valid. We couldn't preserve the links to the author name or message detail because they don't seem to work anymore.

From SnapDragon's introduction to the last
Challenge Mode topic:
"Anyone is welcome to post their scores
here and get some recognition, even if they're not in the running
for the high-score charts. Don't be intimidated by the scores here;
many of us have played each individual level hundreds of times, and
there's no shame in not reaching that level of hardcoreness.
:)"
We are expanding the high score boards to 20 for the 5
levels. I added the scores that were posted after the last update on
the previous thread, but did not search back through the thred for
scores that had been bumped. Please post any scores that you wish to
have on the top 20 lists. The current list is:

I ran out of room on the first post, so here's
some notes:
Our current policy for scores that claim to be in
the top 3 is to have some kind of verification before the asterisk
is removed; an asterisk next to a score indicates an unverified
claim. A good method of verification is to post a photo showing the
screen with the high score, and a napkin taped to the TV with your
GameFAQs name and the date.
The top ten combined totals needs
to be verified and updated (TomatoMan's score at least is
incorrect). I simply don't have time right now. I will correct it on
the next High Score update.
We should keep the combined
totals list to only a top 10. Any more will be hard to maintain and
may push us over the 4k limit once we get a full 20 on each of the
other lists.

Excellent, excellent, very nice job Ahlyis! It's
great to kick off the fourth version of this thread - that's really
something special!
In fact, unless I'm remembering wrong,
isn't today the one year anniversary of Pikmin's release? Or is it
the Cube's release? Maybe it's that. Never mind. :)
I do like
the "combined total" score thing, too. That's a nice
addition.
Nathan, I haven't received your tape yet, but I'm
assuming I will tomorrow.

Great job Ahlyis! And the top 10 combined scores
is a fantastic idea too. I really like the look of the first entry
in this thread: I'm in 3 of the top 20s! Maybe I'll check only the
first page from now on so that I never have to see my name get
pushed out. ;-)
Then again maybe my top score
in

seriously doubt that my high in

get me anywhere, though.

Congratulations to all the new scores (Xel23,
robluvsnic, Grenade Guzzler, TomatoMan, Mikepharvey and Rogue7).
Quite the flood of scores!
Mike, you finally got it. Now
you've got the four perfects and I assume you'll soon be mounting an
offensive in the Distant Spring.
Rogue, I'm glad you're not
satisfied with 442. You thinking of going for the 452?
Nai, I
actually posted your Distant Spring and Forest Navel scores on
November 16 in the old Challenge Mode thread. Just thought you'd
like to know that I gave you credit before the old thread died.
Tomato, I'm happy my video finally got there. I didn't
expect it to take eight days, however. Have you gotten a chance to
check it out yet? If not, it's the last run on the tape (right
before the tape runs out). I didn't bother writing down a tracking
number for you because I figured its proximity to the end of the
tape makes it easy to locate.
That's all for
now.

All righty! Just finished ripping Nathan's FN
452, and I'm going to slap together quicktime vids of it so people
can see it. Ahlyis, think you can host one more vid for
us?
My off-the-bat reaction to this run is: it's eerily calm.
Deceptively so. This became abundantly clear at one point about
halfway through when Nathan's coming up from the puffstool area with
about 40 pikmins in tow, and he runs right past a blue 1
that's right smack in the middle of his path. He comes back for it
later on, but he knows exactly what he needs to do and what the plan
is. There's an amusing bit where he flings away a blue 1 early in
the game for no apparent reason, but you see it later. He finishes
the 452 just as the countdown starts, and we're treated to a
fireworks show at the end.
All of this the product of a cold,
calculating mind with one purpose only: to kill. Well, or to pluck
lots of Pikmin. :) This vid is a clinic in precision. Amazing job,
Nathan.

Suspiciously enough,
this is an 11-point improvement... and I saw earlier that I had been
bounced from the top 10 combined by 11 points. This brings my total
to 1872, enough to tie Xel23 for tenth place overall. Sad to be
excited about tenth place, but there it is. :P Had a couple of
things being sucked up with the counter at zero, but didn't get
credit for them. :( I was sure I had broken 560. Ah

Tomato, thanks for the kind words. I'm more
proud of my work on Forest Navel than I am of any other level.
Sometimes I watch the video and it kills me how much time I had at
the end. I keep having to fight the notion that instead of putting
more Pikmin than are necessary on the blue 5, yellow 5 and red 20 at
the end I could run over to the pearl area again and try to get the
yellow 10 in. But I don't think it could happen. I'd have to run
back up and get more guys then run back down and double up the
yellow. This would take too long. How difficult it is to satisfy a
mortal.
I just thought I'd mention something about the one
blue Pikmin I throw away and use later: it seems Rogue and I both
managed to come up with this idea completely independent of one
another. So I don't want to look like I'm the only sick fool who
came up with the trick. I like the way you think,
Rogue!

Having returned my rented copy of
TimeSplitters 2 on Xbox, I found myself with some time last night to
play Pikmin again. I almost quit after just a few rounds because I
was so out of practice, but decided I really had nothing better to
do anyway and stuck with it. Good call :-)
I stuck with the
same basic pattern I've been using all along, but made some
modifications to save some time. I'll post an updated version of my
walkthrough to Xel's FAQ thread.
I got everything back in,
though the yellow 20 pellet got sucked up with the counter on 1. I
lost 5 Pikmin at various points, but none by mysterious death. I
know my pattern can get a perfect now. It's just a matter of pulling
off that one clean run! :-)

Distant Spring - 558
As Tomato is
fond of saying, it's a game of inches. This was the fourth run of my
revised strategy. I had hit a wall with the old strat and was
racking my brains trying to figure out what to change to yield
better results. What I finally concluded was that one Wollywog that
I attack early in my old strat is best left to the end of the run.
By making this tiny change I was able to kill and retrieve several
creatures in the same amount of time.
I had a handful of
mysterious deaths (it's too frantic for me to keep count but I can
tell there were several because the base had a lot of sprouts
growing at the end), two misfiled yellow 5-pellets and a misfiled
red 10-pellet. I also had a Wollywog at the blue onion as time
expired. I'm not sure what the maximum for my new strategy would be
but I am shooting for between 565 and 575. I also decided it better
not to attack any Puffy Blowhogs because they are more unpredictable
than other enemies, often take longer to kill and drop random color
pellets.
Mike, I don't know if I should bless or curse you.
You've put the fear of God in me, that much is for sure. I don't
want to lose my crown. I think it's time to go for the gusto and
attack Ferret's score. Good job, by the way.
It looks like
there's a Forest of Hope revival going on. Ahlyis and Grenade
Guzzler have both cleared the level and are now just working on
doing so without deaths. Nice work, guys! I figure Tomato is still
in the hunt for his second perfection as well and I talked to
JimiThingR today who informed me he has broken 500 finally (well
over 500, but I'll let him post his own score). If everybody keeps
at it we potentially have four more members of the FoH perfection
club. Onward, Pikmin soldiers.
I need to go to bed now. It's
extremely late....so late that some might call it early. I just
couldn't go to sleep until I ran through Distant Spring one more
time and tried out the ideas bouncing around frantically in my head
like a rubber ball in a frictionless box.

nathan, i could kill you, no sooner was i
dancing with joy gaining a 553 and equalling your score i discover
you get a 558!!!
Distant spring-553
i had about
10 deaths, a yellow 10,blue 5,blue1,red 5 in wrong onions which i
usually get right and i had a red 5 about to be sucked up. i made
some major mistakes as well and never had time to go for the 3 dwarf
bulbs and 10 red pellet at the end.
i will postpone sending a
pic till next week as i am highly confident i will beat my
score.

FoH - 569
FN - 395
Combined Total -
1938
Finally got the perfecto on FoH. If someone really
wants it, I can get a screenshot, but in the past we've said that
either a screenshot OR a detailed walkthrough is sufficient. I have
posted a very detailed walkthrough for Xel's guide already. If that
is not considered sufficient any more, let me know.
The 395
on FN came by following Rogue7s 'easy' walkthrough from Xel's guide.
The target score there is 350+, but with some minor modifications I
pushed it to nearly 400. Nevertheless the pattern is mainly
Rogue7's. :-)

Glad I could help, Ahlyis, especially after
using your strat for FT. Excellent work on FoH 569
also!
Nathan, that little move to collect the blue 1 by
tossing one aside and using it later is a nice one. That pellet gave
me fits until I figured that out. I would say great minds think
alike, but if that were true I'd have that 452 by now.
MikeP,
at least Nathan's around to make you feel some of my pain.
Seriously, nice work on DS (Nathan, too).

The hi-res version is up now.
My FoH run
finished with 9 on the timer. It was done much faster then my
previous runs. It's nice to get to the point on a level where you
know it so well that you can picture the entire thing in your head
and make 'counts' to know how many of what colors you need and
where.
I don't know FN that well yet, but I gotta make what
may be a stupid comment anyway. :-)
After viewing Nathan's
452 run, I can't help but believe that 462 is possible. That yellow
10 can be gotten. Nathan does some very good organizing at the start
and does much of it much cleaner than I have been. But even so, I
saw a few places where he loses some time that could have been
saved. By itself, it's probably not enough. Everyone is going to
have some less than perfect spots even on their best run. But he
does so much running back and forth later on, that I gotta believe
there's got to be a quicker way.
Then again, since the two
masters are both convinced that 452 is the limit, what do I know.
But wait, wasn't Nathan convinced that 442 was the limit...???
:-)

Curse you, Ahlyis! :)
Jeez, now I've
gotta bring my scores up by 42 just to sneak back to last
place on the top 10 combined! Yowch!
Well, when I get back
home next week, I'm turning it on again! Get that perfecto on FoH
and then I think it's back to Distant Spring, where I've got 241 and
lots of room to grow! :)

Distant Spring - 565
Mike is hot
on my tail but my strategy is kicking into high gear just in time.
This time I pulled in everything I had laid out in the
inventory I posted a while ago....except for the Puffy Blowhog. The
goal in that inventory was 594 and it assumed that all pellets are
filed correctly and no deaths occur. So 579 would be the maximum
score with my current "Sans Puffy Blowhog" strategy without any
mis-filings or deaths. Realistically the strat can pull in just over
570 if the important Wollywogs drop blues. Now I have a choice to
make: either keep trying to get the most out of my current strat and
eek the score up inches at a time or examine it thoroughly and seek
out weak points. I think the former has more potential because it's
a very efficient strategy and has plenty of potential. My 565 run
was very sloppy and I could have had an extra 30 seconds to work
with at the end if I had moved more smoothly. What I'm thinking is
that if I have a run where I'm moving very quickly I can possibly
attack the blowhog with the time I save and pull in his pellets. I
hope I can do it because another rethink will be taxing on my
brain.
If I had done this a couple of hours earlier it would
have made the new score board. Oh well.

Ahlyis: d'oh! Right, FT. I'm such a spaz
with the level names, even still. Didn't I mistitle your run "DS" on
the first vid I produced? :P
I archived the third challenge
mode thread, and I still have the first. Still kicking myself about
missing the second. :(

Wow. Things are getting exciting around here. So
much movement, and best of all is the prospect of theoretical
"perfects" being challenged. Just imagine it ... someone breaking
600 on DS. Highly improbable, I know, but is it
impossible?
What time I get to make runs I'm devoting to FN
now, and I have to say that I think any score on FN that can break
400 is worthy of high praise -- so congratulations especially to
Nathan, Mike and Rogue (and I know, Ahlyis, that you'll break 400
shortly). My current strat was worked out on the presumption that
getting the two 20s and the two 10s down past the pearly clam-clamp
is nigh impossible, as is getting the two yellow 10s in the water
(in different spots) and the yellow 20 needing the bridge. That
means that I'm automatically ruling out 100 pikmin and working
towards a theoretical top of 382 -- and that's only if I manage to
get everything else in!
A more realistic target is 350, I
suppose, and after that (if it ever happens) I'd like to devote my
time to breaking 450 (maybe 500???) on DS.
Meanwhile, good
luck everyone.

Yes, that's
one away from maximum. I got no deaths, but I messed up and put a
blue 1 pellet in the yellow Onion. Argh. Gotta be more careful next
time.
